Ive created a collaberative google map where we can pin locations. I *think* I did it right...

    That's an interesting idea, Mr. Tips . . .
when I went to your map, it was the entire USA

So I zoomed in a little on Brooklandia. Let's see if these links hold up...okay, their html embed doesn't work, but the regular link does
    Here's a more local linkee

edited to fix that durn link

I don't see anything up there now. Just, as the last poster mentioned, a map of the USA. On the zoom there's nothing up on the streets yet. Is this interactive? Do we put down places we know of or have personally been mugged on? I like the idea, but i think it is pretty clear where all of this is happenning.

Maybe you can scroll thru the posts over the last year and place waypoints at each mugging site? I almost called them POIs, i.e. Points Of Interest. that would've been a faux pas.

I just pulled it up and see three points so far. Seems like the recent ones I've read about.

Interesting idea, however accurate pin maps are available to view at the 77 pct. Everything from Homicides, to Grand Larcenies of Automobiles are all mapped out. The problem with your system, is that its based on anonymous posts with no way to question there validity. There have been several Robberies that have occurred that have not been reported on Brooklynian and also a lot that've never been reported at all.

Yes and the problem with the 77th map is that if the cops don't take a report it doesn't get put on the board (or as some have accused, they play down the robberies to keep the stats better). It would be nice if the police and the board can work together on this one.

Would someone be able to take a picture of the 77th pin map and post it here? Seems like interesting info, but not too convenient for most users to access (unless they make frequent visits to the precinct). I spent a little time living in LA and the LAPD had an online version of what you describe...maybe NYPD has something similar in the works?

The Cops must be taking reports, otherwise the 77 precinct wouldn't be designated an Operation Impact Precinct.

Come on, you know what she's talking about.

I doubt there's a longtime resident of this city who hasn't been stonewalled by an officer at one time or another when trying to report a crime. Even the PBA has published info about how the Compstat program is an incentive for underreporting.

I don't know that the public has easy (or any) access to the CompStat numbers anyway. I wish even the blotter stuff that goes up on Gothamist had a shelf life.
Any options beyond looking at the pin map in person at the precinct?

We are all concerned about crime and good policing here.

I think it's a cool idea too. I'm sure the 77th precinct map has more info, but it's great to have a map that's so easily accessible. I do read the mugging threads, but I never seem to remember the locations. This helps me see how close these were to home. (Eeep!) Thanks Tips!
