Not surprisingly, some commenters there have misunderstood the purpose - my favorite being those who proclaim 4th ave as a safe haven, due to the relative lack of incident pins (bit far for Prospect Heights vicinity, no?).

Hey Matt, you might want to be asking people for DETAILS instead of corroboration. When people are posting first person accounts, there is probably not a link to a newspaper, or even a link back to this site if they didn't chose to start a whole thread about their incident.

Yeah, details are definitely fine if it's a first-person account, but Guru's post didn't have a date, a description, or a link, so I changed it to a question mark to flag it and asked for more info.

Also, anyone know more about the robbery at gunpoint on Sterling 4/7...sounds pretty aggressive (supposedly took keys and all). Time of day?

Eeek, the downside of open collaboration: subject to human error in a big way. How do we get to a cached copy?

The best place to post this would be in the police precincts. Perhaps the cops would get a clue? Doubtful.

Mugging Map
To add a crime, click "edit," right click on the map, click "add a placemark," and fill in the relevant information. Please DO NOT edit the title and description on the left-hand frame of the page.

Additions with minimal information are designated by a question mark on the map.

Red (with dot): Murder
Red (no dot): Shooting
Blue: Assault and/or Mugging
Purple: Store Robbery
Yellow: Sexual Assault
Green: Quality of Life
Policeman: Police Precinct
Use the marker with a dot for any crime where a gun was used.

As for the usefulness, MeredithB, read the thread and decide for yourself if it interests you. It's been discussed.
Some folks like to keep track here, and pin the threads to a location on the map. It would be great if the NYPD saw fit to publish their crime blotter info in this fashion online, but they don't. They've had requests from websites, and other city's police depts do it...
Anyway, this info is gleaned from first person stories here, along with published accounts from the papers, and the Gothamist blotter map.

On a more serious note, one knows what culture they identify with and they also know what they perceive the other persons culture to be.

I don't think _all_ the pins are in the wrong place, but it looks like the map has become the subject of some "vandalism" someone spelled out "useless" in pins around fort green...clever!! :roll:

Also, someone did a bunch of entries on july 22nd, but neglected to put the pins in the right location (all clustered around 6th ave in PS).

There may be other errors, i haven't looked at the map much since the mugging "wave" of late 07/early 08.

It's collaborative - feel free to relocate the pins to their proper place.

Anyone happen to know if those retractable batons are legal here in NY? I won't let myself become a victim without at least putting up a fight (unless, of course, there's a gun and/or more than 3 people involved), but wouldn't want to find myself in prison because I defended myself with a possibly-illegal weapon...

Batons are illegal in NY. Pepper spray is the only legal self-defense device.

<edit> Not sure about those little eye-gouger things, or the mini fixed length batons, but an ASP/extendable baton is def. illegal. All seems pretty arbitrary to me. Baton is illegal, baseball bats are legal. Maybe it has something to do with concealed vs unconcealed.

i'm not so sure about this, i just looked at the penal code § 265 and i didn't see anything about batons, retractable or otherwise. why do you think they're illegal?

I think they classify batons under "billy" in section 265.

Later, there's a carveout as follows:

Section 265.01 shall not apply to possession of that type of billy commonly known as a "police baton" which is twenty-four to twenty-six inches in length and no more than one and one-quarter inches in thickness by members of an auxiliary police force of a city with a population in excess of one million persons or the county of Suffolk when duly authorized by regulation or order issued by the police commissioner of such city or such county respectively.

That's clearly for a fixed baton - like a nightstick, but they seem to lump stick-like things used to beat people under the billy designation. You are correct that there's no _specific_ mention of retractable batons. Vendors of self defense gear won't ship ASP batons to NY addresses, and I think at least one of our police officer posters has said they are illegal in NY.

I saw that carveout at 265.20, but there was no definition for a billy under 265.0

they clearly define all of the other weapons mentioned in the chapter, but do not have a definition for billy. arguably, i think a billy and a baton are two different things, but it's possible that they intended it as you said. However, it would make all sorts of other things illegal as well, to claim that billy is a catch-all for sticks used to beat someone. For instance, there are numerous martial arts weapons that I know are not illegal as their use is taught in classes in the city.
