You don't like going to go over to Flatbush?!

    Butcher shop!

A good bagel place (and don't you Bergen Bagel me- I said a good bagel place).

A bakery that focuses on breads (as opposed to something like Joyce).

A post office branch (OK, I know this is total dreaming).

A good place for late night snacks to serve all the bar-goers (maybe this will be the new pizza place's strategy).

    A good Chinese restaurant.

There's a fuax post office type place that Roomie saw recently- right near the gym (and american apparel) on Flatbush. Its a shipping packages place, but they sell stamps and I believe you can mail stuff from there.

    Anyone know the name?

I second the butcher and would add a good fish monger. I miss the fish place that Joyce replaced.

By the way you can get great bread now at Natural Land on Flatbush. I'm totally hooked. But their fish sucks.

I gasped a little when you said butcher shop. Should we dare to dream of such a ridiculous luxury?

I've resorted to buying my meat at the farmer's market.

    Subject: Butcher

For those who have lived in this hood for more than 20 years, you will all remember that we had a butcher right in front of MET food, on Vanderbilt between Prospect and Park place, i remember my father sending me there every weekend to get our meat for the bbq's in the park..This neighborhood needs a butcher but then again remember, none of these mom and pops stores would make it, rent too high and profits too little..

Hee, as for me, one of my first posts on this site was about a nail salon that used to exist in the Home Heating Oil storefront. It was called the Nail Gazaasm, which I really never understood, and while the woman who appeared to run the place was quite pleasant, getting a manicure there took foreeeeeevvver.

you may well be right about rent and profits of a butcher -- although that is also what i would most like to see open, and i promise that if it were like los paisanos, i would buy and buy and buy -- but i'm confused by your definition of mom and pop stores. do you mean something more specific than just independent, non-chain stores? because it seems to me that most of vandy is non-chain.

WOW i totally remember nail gazaazm. strangest name. defied pronunciation. therefore, i never went there. and a few doors down was that bulletproof glass ensconced bodega (where the plant shop is now) that i always thought was a front for something, and was never open on sunday! and remember the fish market in the joyce space?

I loved the Nail Gazaaazam and once saw Jada Pinkett Smith there getting a pedi with her sister, who apparently lived in the neighborhood. I was so bummed when they closed...they'd been starting work on a nice spa-like room in the back when they closed. I loved getting my nails done there. This neighborhood needs a non-scuzzy, clean and aesthetically appealing nail-waxing salon. I go to Seven Nail on Flatbush and while the ladies there are nice, it's about as dumpy as can be in the waxing room.

Anyone want to back a new operation? I'll run it! PM me.

How about a decent pub type bar? Mooney's is closing soon and no one knows how long Freddy's will be around. I cannot stand Soda. Sepia is awesome but sometimes not divey enough.

A wine bar would be cool... maybe a divey pub type wine bar with great snack food?

Either of those two would work as point#5 on my list.

If you guys remember the Bistro opened up a shop for a short time and i got one of the best peices of skirt steak i have had in my life. Union Market has decent meat and most of all Key food on 7th has rabbit.

ooh. I have an ING electric orange checking account, in addition to my orange savings account. I think a cafe, where I could ... chill with my accounts (and fulltilt) would be awesome.

There's a perfectly serviceable home heating oil place in the old nail gazaasm space. What Vanderbilt needs is a good take-out heating oil place.
