Sanitation worker holiday bonuses?

Anyone ever hear of buildings (condo or co-op) giving sanitation workers who pick up their garbage cash bonuses for the holidays (around $100 each)? Is this a real thing or not?

    yes-
when I go to get my hair cut do I really need (and need to tip):

    1) a person to take my coat/get me water
    2) a person to wash my hair
    3) a person to dye my hair
    4) another person to wash it again
    5) another person to cut it

    no. no I do not.

I have never heard of any coop/condo or individual tipping the city's sanitation workers. They don't work for tips. And I agree that tipping is out of control.

I would never in a million years tip my postal worker considering the crappy job he does! half the time i don't get mail, the other half the time, we get mail for other people/buildings! Besides myself, i am sure no one else in my building even knows who the mailman is.

As for sanitation workers, we live in a small co op building and we have never done that nor have I ever seen any of my neighbors standing outside waiting for the garbage trucks to come by so they could hand someone an envelope. how would you even know if that was your regular garbage people anyway?

The only person like that I tip is my UPS man. he has been my UPS man for 3 years and he is just a great guy. Carries things up the stairs for me, will even catch me out on the street to give me a package. Love him!

Just so he or she doesn't get caught. They will be fired. In my old build the mail carrier was great and would adimently refuse all tips.

Yes. And I do it because I really like my postal carrier and my garbage men and the best around.

Yes I know and at first so did mine but I told him that it was something that I, from one person to another, wanted to do. If my carrier drank I would buy him a bottle of his favorite spirits but he doesn't.

I thought all postal workers were drunken, trigger (metaphorical of course) happy, pack mules...

    I'll tip for that.

We're lucky and have a great mail carrier so we tip him every year. We used to tip our UPS guy but he no longer has our route and we don't have a steady person yet. We tip our sanitation workers because, due to having a lot of cats, our garbage can be very heavy (cat litter). That being said, if the mail service wasn't good, we wouldn't tip; if the UPS person hadn't been pleasant, we wouldn't tip; if the sanitation workers didn't do a good job, we wouldn't tip.

I know who the regular sanitation guys are and I usually try to give them something - enough for some beers after their shift etc. The post woman too. I like knowing who these people are and having a good relationship with them. I also give $10 to the woman and son who deliver the NYT.

I would bet good money that Sanitation workers are not supposed to accept tips -- certainly not cash tips. I don't doubt that they work hard, but they're also unionized, pensioned, and make $60k+ plus OT to take out the trash. I mean, make your own decisions, tip the garbage men if you really feel the desire, but really, doing so should not be obligatory and is formally improper. Cops get busted by Internal Affairs for accepting free cups of coffee.

Here's the money quote from that website, by the way:

    Q. Sometimes I am offered a tip from firms I do business with as part of
my City job. Is it a violation to accept such a gratuity?

    A. Yes. Even if the tip is a small one and is given after your work
with the firm is completed, it is a violation to accept any
compensation or gratuity for performing any official duty from
any person or firm other than the City.

We tip our mail guy. We know him and he's very nice if sometimes late with our mail delivery. We tip the UPS guy and the post office truck delivery woman. We do not tip the garbage men. Wouldn't know them if I did. They refuse to take our cans if they are too heavy or if someone in the night threw a piece of garbage on top of the wrong can.

We must have the same UPS guy... I choose UPS when I can just because he is so nice (also stops me on the street and makes fun of me for never being home). Now I have to think about tipping...

Jesus, thank god it's illegal to tip - thanks for that info.
I was beginning to feel like an ass.

when we had just moved and had a lot of garbage (but it was all within the designated number of cans each pick up day) the garbage men refused to take more than they were in the mood to....that is, until my husband tipped them. Guy refused to take it in his hand but indicated that my husband should drop the money on the ground, which he then picked up. Nice, huh?

But at least we're not in Chicago.....

The garbage men in my neighborhood show up at the crack of dawn so I have no idea who they are. Additionally, they ALWAYS leave one or two bags of garbage behind resulting in a ticket from the city for having trash out on a non-trash day (the next day). Screw them.

Tipping postal/sanitation workers is more of a Manhattan thing. Neither worker is supposed to accept them so it is done very much on the QT. It is considered a small price for those larger buildings to ensure these ppl go the extra mile during the coming year.
