Sanitation worker holiday bonuses?

Tipping postal/sanitation workers is more of a Manhattan thing. Neither worker is supposed to accept them so it is done very much on the QT. It is considered a small price for those larger buildings to ensure these ppl go the extra mile during the coming year.

My regular sanitation guys put the cans back neatly, once took a couch out of my house that my wife and I didn't get out to the street on time, helped me win vs. a bogus ticket from the sanitation inspector, and let my young son pull the lever on the truck. I could care less if its illegal to tip them! $10 for a six-pack is a small token of gratitude for such great guys.

I am sorry, the part about them putting your garbage pails back neatly just boggles my brain! I have found my garbage cans across the street and down a few houses many times!!

Sounds like a bribe to me. Its too bad that buildings with wealthy people who can afford generous tips get better service than buildings with poor people who can't afford to tip. I guess that is the way of the world - so sad.

Well you are breaking the law and so are they.

I know but like I said they really go the extra mile for me. I have seen bags break on them and they make sure they clean up all that fell out, if I forget to put the bags on the sidewalk they will come in the area and take them.

Also if you feel like you don't want to tip them but you really appreciate them - you can send a nice note to the Sanitation Dept. praising them. These letters go into their permanent file and also boost morale in the office and helps them when evaluation comes around. I did this one year because I never caught them around the holidays and when I did see them they thanked me for such a nice letter and said it made them feel good to know that they are appreciated.
