Why would a soup kitchen be nice for a 5 and 7 year old?

Also, tell your wife to grab Time Out plus any of the neighborhood papers she comes across. They always have kids events listed such as movies, theater, shows, etc.

Excellent suggestions. Love the butterfly exhibit. American Girl is great for lunch also so I've been told.

Dylans Candy Store is fun. Tea at the Plaza.

Bronx Zoo.

I second the zoo if they haven't gone already. Also A Dumbo trip for Grimaldi's and homemade ice cream next door by the water.

The Gazillion Bubble Show. My 9 year old niece loved it and there were kids as young as 3 there

The cooking classes are terrific we did it two years in a row where we made gingerbread houses - the kids loved it!

Also, try the Blue Man Group or Stomp as off-Broadway entertainment. For some reason, kids love the drumming on random inanimate objects.

-Do they give tours at Silvercup Studios?
-Have your wife do some research ahead of time and conduct a scavenger hunt in a library
-Sign the kids up for some sort of class (think: how to make something)

When I was a kid, they used to have art classes for kids on Saturday mornings at (I think) The Children's Museum.

We took a 5 year old and a 7 year old to Blueman Group this summer and they LOVED it!

The kid-friendly version of Magic Flute plays at the Met one more time this season, on New Years Day -- it's short, like 85 minutes, I think (and it's in english, and directed by Julie Taymor, who did The Lion King). NYC Ballet has The Nutcracker for a bit more (usually ends the first week after new years, I think)

Squirrel is being disposed of while we type. "Somebody" asked their boyfriend to come get it. It was very "Big" of him :-)

Well so much for the kids having fun any fun.

Since they have a car service, there's an indoor glow in the dark mini golf course in Connecticut. Friends and I took a trip up there in the spring. Stopped and got steamed burgers on the way up, then amazing pizza in New Haven on the way back home. It was only about a 2 hour drive from the city.
