Hopefully it isn't as bad as it sounds. The plane is intact and hasn't sunk. They are already pulling out survivors.

Looks like they may have made an emergency landing after losing power or something. The plane appears to be intact. REALLY scary though.

The plane was quickly submerged about 30 minutes after the crash.

They hit a flock of geese and they got sucked into the engine, apparently...

CBS2 made it sound as if it was a bird in the engine, and that it landed sans smoke or flame in one piece. Hopefully those boats can pull people from the frigid water.

Well, I didn't bring up the fact that a bunch of geese died in this accident...

it's likely that most on the plane were business commuters, so probably few if any pets.

nyc owes that pilot a beer
    everybody lives!

and it was the private ferry services that got people to safety, so yeah to them too
    what a heart stopper

That the pilots managed to land that plane in good shape (in regards to no lives lost) the Hudson instead of panicking and smacking into a populated area is nothing short of talent and professionalism. Hurray to the ferry people, FDNY and cops for their quick response and actions.

    Subject: Miracles DO Happen

Jet had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River because a bunch of geese were sucked into two engines. EVERYONE SURVIVED! What a day to take a dunk in the river.

does it not seem weird - even alarming - to anyone that birds can take down a PLANE?! i grew up near east hartford, CT, home of pratt & whitney, which made jet engines. practically everyone's parents worked either there or at an insurance company in hartford. there were always rumors of a job that involved throwing bird carcasses into running jet engines to see what would happen. clearly that job was important. and not done very well by whomever made the engines for this US airways jet!!

ps, i agree, idlewild - hear, hear for the pilot, FDNY ferry people (who were needing to redeem themselves after the crash a couple years ago), and cops! but boo to the carcass-thrower at the jet engine manufacturer!

well, it's actually something pilots are well aware of....they're always concerned about birds even though it's something a lay person may not know about. as far as the testing of the engines - they generally throw frozen turkeys in there. my understanding is that it was a flock and there's really not much that can be done in such a situation....it is what it is....they'd have to invent a new jet engine..

Most commercial pilots will encounter birds being sucked into an engine 4-5 times over the course of their careers. Pilots are given training on what to do if this happens, and airplane manufacturers give updates to airlines on specific ways to deal with airstrikes on particular planes. What seemed to make this unusual was the fact that he hit a flock of planes which took out two engines.

The airports have tried cutting down trees near their runways and flight paths that attract birds that may fly into engines, but environmentalists have argued that those areas are natural habitats and should not be disturbed.

it's a problem even without trees -- i remember hearing about geese near o'hare being a problem, for example, and that's pretty much surrounded by houses. not sure what you could do about the shorebirds around jfk short of paving jamaica bay, either.

Some airports use sound to frighten away birds (I think JFK does this) but for some reason that doesn't occur at LaGuardia.

The pilot deserves a huge raise. Awesome job he did.

There's also a bird sanctuary right by there too.

even without a designated sanctuary, i doubt you'd be rid of them. shorelines are just too perfect.

I took that same flight, USAir to Charlotte from LGA, just last month. Scary. Plane filling up with cold water --- a fright.

It's what you get when you set up airports near migratory paths as well as watering holes for our fine feathered friends. Plus, if they hit a goose I don't care how strong your fan blades are that sucker is going to get shut down. Twelve plus pounds of bird probably flying around 30mph smacks into a heavy weight ring of fans going at 6,000 rpms (I'm guessing) with a forward motion of almost 200mph...I say the engineers have done their job making sure the engine stayed intact.
