Park Slope Parents charging for a list serve? Give me a brea

Oh, I see. So, this was a formal for-profit event like a circus or a concert rather than a "community" event for parents and their kids. When my kids were small (not while I was in the slope, afterwards), we used to have community events and for those kind of events everyone would bring extra eggs for those kids who for whatever reason didn't bring anything, understanding that there were people of different economic backgrounds or family circumstances. It would have been enormously cruel to cut those kids out of the fun. I would imagine that a for fee event would provide the eggs or something!

I clearly misunderstood the nature of the event. I thought it was some parent organized event for the kids. Turning kids away who didn't have eggs sounded outright cruel to me.

I would certainly never expect to get into the circus for free, I would pay for my tickets in advance just like everything else and I would never be so rude as to bring my dog.

I thought it was a PSP sponsored event? And of course, only 3 people out of the thousands who say they'd volunteer (if PSP asked, which they always do) actually did. I would never.
Egg hunts are a harsh reality. Unfair, filled with evil sugar, cause for major sibling squabbles, usually ending in tears, tantrums etc.
Once again, expecting ANYONE (new) in this neighborhood to do ANYTHING like bring their own eggs is a joke. Yuppies EXPECT to get served. And when they don't get the exact same amount as everyone else, they complain about it. But never step up to change it.

So, what is the limit of people not bringing eggs? What do you do if you have 20 kids in one group for an egg hunt and only 3 of them brought eggs? is that fair? This was an event somewhat sponsored by the PSP group, but, nothing was provided by them except for the organization. So, no eggs were provided other than the ones parents and kids brought. How many people without eggs do you let in before saying, ok, this isn't going to work? All the previous years, people were let in to participate in the hunt, contribution or not, but, this year they changed it.

personally, I don't care how many eggs my kids get, as long as they get some, and we even gave eggs away that we found to little kids who couldn't find any on their own.

But, it was a simple request, bring eggs as an admittance fee to the hunt, so, yeah, people who didn't were turned away.

As for the different economic background comment, like someone else said about the $25 fee that PSP is about to impose, if people in this neighborhood can afford to pay the fee, they can afford to buy a bag of plastic eggs at Rite Aid for $3.99. We are blue collar people with a much much lower income than most in this area and we were able to do it.

Entitled people need a place to live and thrive. Park Slope is as good a place as any for them.

Maybe that's why I moved away..twice. Actually, I liked Park Slope when my kids were little. It was a great place to have little kids but I found the whole superior parent thing a bit wearing. Thank god not all parents in PS were like that! I still like Park Slope, it just turned out to be cheaper elsewhere.

All the previous years, people were let in to participate in the hunt, contribution or not, but, this year they changed it.

I really don't understand why people think that PSP should be free. They provide a service. It costs money to provide this service (it's not just a list serve) and they have tried to offset the cost with ad revenue. This is obviously not working, so they have to charge money. If people don't want to pay the $25, so be it. If you think you can provide a similar service for less money, go for it.

As far as the egg hunt goes, why would you show up without any eggs? You didn't bring eggs, you didn't volunteer to set it up or help out in any way, and yet you are can't understand why they would turn you away?

The best part about all this is that the site that runs with the story is Gawker. Can't get much lower than that.

Just an FYI... I heard the list went to their paid membership a couple of days ago and they went from 8000+ down to 1200 members.

You also have to take into account the 100s of people who join a list serve and never return, it's not as if so many active members were lost, I am sure a lot of those numbers are people who were never there to begin with. I know I have joined boards, read it once or twice and then never went back.

Yeah, just checked, there are now 1243 members on the parenting board and 1280 on the classifieds, of course, a lot of those numbers overlap obviously.

Does anyone know if any of the free upstarts have picked up steam? We're among those who were members on the free version and are not paying for the new one.

I paid my $25. There are a lot less members, but the activity on the list is no different. Same number of posts and replies.

No idea how the free lists are doing, but it is not the first time that someone has started an alternative to the PSP list due to annoyance with the moderators or some other reason. I do not expect that they will build up much steam, but good luck to them.

Paid mine too and activity seems the same to me also.

I have a friend who was happy to pay - she said she saved a fortune on the boards...she even contributed a little extra to help people that can't afford the fee

that is pretty much how I felt too, I have saved so much money over the years by buying or trading stuff with other people on the classifieds, that it was worth it to me to pay. Not to mention the money I have made over the years selling my own stuff on there

Paid mine too...not only has the classifieds saved me $$, but the occasional insanity on the discussion board is worth the price of admission alone....
