[quote=Carnivore]Yeah, undercooked meat doesn't look appetizing. Major insight.

FYI, thoracotomies look "gross" too. Maybe you should try to convince people to stop them.

Not sure what your point is, but I wouldn't want to eat that, either, (cooked or raw).

people who think meat doesn't come from animals -- you know, those folks who are grossed out by anything but a chicken cutlet -- are almost as ridiculous as people who think open hostility is a good debate technique.

My point is that a picture of an animal that hasn't been cooked yet isn't an argument for or against anything. If you want to talk about eating animals, talk about it. But what you're doing is like the people who think pictures of fetuses are an argument against abortion. It's inane.

A picture of a fetus should make someone consider the gravity of the decision to abort, and the pictures of dead pigs ought to remind you that animals are dying in vast numbers for no good reason.

Obviously, throughout human history, we had no alternative but to eat meat in order to survive, but at present, (at least in our rich country) that is no longer true. An animal is born, lives briefly under abominable conditions, suffers and dies so that you can scarf down bacon cheeseburgers: now THAT'S inane.

All animals die. A dead pig looks like a dead pig whether it dies of natural causes or to enrich our dinner tables.

Not at all- it's delicious. If you are satisfied with survival, good for you. Most humans, once they secure what is necessary to survive, prefer to enjoy their lives. Sex is for more than just procreation, our eyes and ears can be used as more than just survival tools to take in music and art, and many of us see eating as more than taking in what is essential to survive. And if survival is what's important, consider that these animals would never have existed if we didn't create them to be eaten. They get a chance to survive for a time only because of us, and they get food and protection from the cruel reality of nature. And then they fulfill their destiny by becoming bacon cheeseburgers.

This argument might've held water twenty years ago before we could get a decent veggie burger. However, we can now easily get our hands on cruelty-free alternatives to meat that taste pretty much the same as dead animals. Of course, if part of your enjoyment of meat comes from the knowledge that an animal died for your pleasure, then fake meat will never satisfy you.

If this were 150 years ago, I'm sure you could've made an equally cute sales pitch for slavery. The "cruel reality" is that countless animals are bred and slaughtered so that you can gnaw on their body parts. "Carnivore" is a fine message board handle, but have you considered shortening it to something catchier, like "Ghoul?"

If you enjoy them, have at it. Personally, I think they taste like crap and taste nothing like meat. It has nothing to do with where it came from and everything to do with the weird homogeneous texture.

Straw man argument. Slaves are people. Animals are not people.
Ghouls eat people. Animals are not people.

All together now! ANIMALS ARE NOT PEOPLE.

I call him a lot worse than ghoul. :)

But on topic, I can understand DH's argument to a degree. Bolt guns are not fun. I don't think any animal should suffer in order to become a meal. But it does happen.

People are going to eat meat no matter how many grotesque pictures you show them. I think the real problem is that a lot of people aren't educated on what exactly happens before that bacon hits their plate. There are ways to slaughter livestock that don't include horrific pain and suffering to the animal. Unfortunately, these methods aren't cost effective to companies like Tyson. I think THAT'S where our energies should be focused - on the huge corporations who only see the bottom line.

No brain, no nervous system, no suffering. Eat them.

Excellent, excellent point, AB! Actually, what really bothers me about most of the meat-eating population is that there seems to be the feeling that the animal is going to be eaten anyway so it doesn't matter how much fear or suffering he or she endures. That, to me, is an almost un-human like sentiment. Every living creature has the right to a decent existence and a decent death - period - even if the intention of taking the life is to be eaten.

To me, there are just right ways - and wrong ways of - of doing things in this world and when it comes to farm animals - specifically factory farmed animals which is where most meat comes from - it's just wrong!
