On a date with a friend of a friend.

Thing is, she wants it to be a social situation.

So, any ideas on where (in Manhattan) 6 people or so could meet up to converse, have a few drinks, and maybe some light food/tapas?

Corner Shop Cafe on Broadway and Bleecker. Decent drinks and small apps plus a small, but tasty menu. Close to some trains and cabs.

This is one of our go-to spots for groups of 3-8, for a hanging out meal or a quick bite before a show. Not sure how often I've been on a Fri/Sat. night but on other nights it's crowded but the wait for a table (if there is a wait) has always been short.

Oh, and I also really like Boca Chica at Houston/1st Ave. Decent sangria and other booze plus a great menu and lively atmosphere. This is another one I've been to several times and always been happy, but there may be a long wait on Fri/Sat nights but maybe that's just everywhere here

It's been there a long time, but it's still a fun place. With a group of 6, it would pay to get there on the early side, otherwise you might be waiting a while for a table.

i've been to cornershop a few times since i used to work nearby. it doesn't strike me as the right match though.

Boca Chica is fun but it can be noisy. I love those plantain chips. Nom nom nom.

bar stuzzichini on B'way & 21st is a good, neutral vibe place -- lots of small plates and great wine list.

Vidro - personally I think that sucks butt for a first date to be a group thing, but whatevs. I say try a wine bar. Any of them. They all have small plates. Most recently tried Allen and Delancey, but that's better for one on one.

Oh, i've got it -- the front area of Verlaine is perfect for a group thing, their cocktails are amazing, they have food and it's happy hour until 10pm! (It's also the bar Brooklynbound and I went on dates with the same dude at so be on the lookout for a muscular Indian dude haha!)

OO yeah the downstairs is very sexy blue cave. Candle lit bathrooms, yummy sangria and wine. Tapas are hit or miss though.

Pravda. Dirty martinis and caviar (with toast points). You can reserve one of the sofas. Maybe more appropriate for your first date though.

10 degrees is my go-to "chill" date winebar spot. I love that place.

Shebeen is a nice place, with friendly bartenders, a chill atmosphere and good artwork. The seating is not the most comfortable, though.

I haven't been to Prada in years.

True about the Sala tapas being hit or miss, but some are really decent, the staff is nice, and I like the downstairs area.

Pegu's the roomiest of the bunch, PDT *absolutely* requires reservations. But PDT has the cool bonus points of the secret entrance and the ability to eat hotdogs & drink whiskey at the same time.

Amending that - Angel's Share doesn't serve food.

Are you sure? Last time I was at Angel Share we got some appetizers.

Angels' Share definitely does not allow a party of 6. Otherwise I definitely would have recommended it. I've been going there for about 13 years now. When they first opened, their maximum party size was 6, then 5, and I believe it is now 4.

thanks for all the tips i've wanted to try pravda for a while, and coincidentally walked by shebeen today.

also in the running is St. Dymphnas on st mark's place, oh wow that's right next store to 10 degrees.
