The Chip Shop

I went into the Chip Shop for the first time last Friday night.

I don't know where I read about it being a great place to eat, but my experience was the exact opposite. I had a Shepard's pie that seemed to be topped with mashed potatoes that came out of a "Idaho instant potatoes" box and the ground beef out of a "Manwich" can. The wait staff was less than solicitous. :(

Perhaps someone else can tell me of a great place in the Park Slope area that serves similar fare that DOESN'T taste like hospital food. I was craving Shepard's pie and it was TOTALLY disappointing.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

I'll ask my mom to whip up some and I'll share. There's nothing like my mom's shepard's pie. NOTHING.

chip shop -- the PS location -- impressed me so thoroughly with the character of its service on my first visit that i have made certain never to return.

does sheep station have shepherd's pie? if so, there's a fair chance it's good.

Yeah Sheep Station makes the Shepherd's pie you want. Chip Shop is fish and chips or bust.

chip shop is for fish n chips and fried mars bars and that's it. I made the shepherd's pie error once myself.

I also think that the quality of the fish and chips has gone down hill as well. The last 2 times I ate there were disappointing. Breading was soggy and tasteless. The fish also didn't taste very fresh.

Sheep Station has horrible service - this from my own experience and friends' experience (unless the management has got on this problem and fixed it).

I wasn't impressed with Sheep Station. I went with Mama and Papi - it was okay...nothing stellar. There's nothing dragging me back there, that's for sure.

I like the shepherd's pie at Dub Pies - perfect size for sneaking into movies at The Pavilion!

I like the chip shop. My to order dishes are the beef or lamb stew, chips on the side please so they don't sog and mac and cheese. The wait staff may not be super friendly but so what they get the deed done and are not unpleasant.. in my experience.

The steak and kidney pie with gravy is a treat. And that's some damn fine mac and cheese with peas.

Peas in the mac-n-cheese? WHY? Bacon, I understand. But peas?

Peas are awesome! I had a can for dinner last night. Um...I suppose I should grocery shop at some point within the next month.

ew. I've lost what little respect I had left for you. Did you eat them with a fork, lick it clean and put it away?

    Whew.

I have friends who love their fish-n-chips and make me take them to Chip Shop. I don't like fish, so I dunno

If you want good fish & chips and you have a car, go to Get It-N-Git on Ralph Ave between Bergen & St. Marks. No seating's available so either eat outside or in the car. Their fried shrimp is pretty good too. I think they're closed on Mondays.

I think the chip shop is good, not spectacular, but scratches that itch for English style fried food. Their wild mushroom shepherds pie is very good (and yes i think the mashed potato on top might not be freshly made -powdered? Probably not?), fish and chips are very good, fried mac n' cheese and fried pizza are fun and tasty. For the price I think it's very reasonable and as good as it gets around here. Service at the 5th ave and the Atlantic one has always been good for me.

I like that peas come on the side of the mac and cheese and when I eat there with my 3 1/2 yr old grandson and we order that dish, he is in heaven. He eats peas anyway and loves the mac and cheese. he never mixes the peas in and eats them separately. Sometimes the culinary preferences of a kid make a certain sense. I never thought to mix the peas in either, but like them on the side.

    You made me laugh..Flexi.

No kidding he is charming and though he is growing up in PS like his dad did, Ben knows how to behave in restaurants and enjoys his food.

Good! We have enough kids who don't. My parents took me to fancy places (and not so fancy places), but they made sure I knew how to behave.

    I still want mac-n-cheese

Yep Flexi.. good behavior is a learned skill. I never blame the kid, always the parents.

I may go there just to pick one up, cause I love bringing illicit food into movies. What's a movie without dinner! yummy :D

I would LOOVE to hear your story and see if the waitstaff were as rude to you as they were to me. :(:(

Really? My experience has been rude folks come from ALL cultures and the the English don't particularly have a monopoly on rudeness. Its funny though, I could have sworn I was served by bratty, burned out bitter folks who HAPPENED to be from the US of A
