Interwebes HALP!

Oh, Brooklynian geeks - I am counting on you.

Here's the scenario:

I am at my mom's house. She has a cable modem through Comcast on her PC. I brought along my laptop, my Roku box (for Netflix streaming) and a wireless router to install (Linksys WRT150N).

NOTHING is working.

I tried installing the wireless router (something I have been able to do several times before), with the installation disc. I get through much of the setup and then it asks what type of access I have. I know the answer is "cable modem/DHCP", but when I choose that (after all of the cables are properly set up), I get a message "the router cannot find the cable modem. Please reboot". I have rebooted everything in every sequence immaginable. Nothing. I even tried static IP, and DSLoptions...nothing works.

I try connecting the ethernet cord from the modem to my laptop (instead of to the PC) and my laptop cannot acuire an IP address. I tried rebooting everything again in different sequences. Nada.

Lastly, I tried hardwiring from modem to Roku box and selecting "wired" during setup. It says that it cannot find the cable modem and make sure nothing is blocking access.

I tried working through Comcast and let's just say they are on my "companies who can suck it" list.

HALP ME! I am in the suburbs with no Netflix, no wireless and bored outta my mind.

Maybe comcast is looking for the MAC address from the PC

Hook the PC to the router via Ethernet and log into the router.

See if you find something on the WAN setup side that says "clone MAC address" this forces the router to adoped the MAC address from the connected device. Let the router do the DHCP

you can look at a copy of the manuals here

    http://www.linksysbycisco.com/APAC/en/support/WRT150N/download

see chapter 5 starting on page 15 for steps to do the setup.

You'll need the username and password for the router so if you don't have them you will have to reset it.

You can't really expect Comcast to support the router, just my $0.02

^Jack, I will try this, thanks.

I never said I expected Comcast to support the router, but there are 3 different devices I tried to hook up and none of them worked - not just the router, but the laptop and the Roku box. Plus, I told the guy three times I rebooted already in every combo (router first, modem first, PC first, etc.) and he says "please reboot".

oh, holy hell. I named the network (let's say "flexi) and the PC is now connected thru the router, but I can't find the network broadcasting. I tried connecting to the generic/locked Linksys ones with the passcode I created, but that's not working. I'm losing my damn mind over here

ok, now the flexi network is broadcasting, but when I try to add the roku box it says it cannot connect, and if MAC filtering is on, I should add the MAC address of the roku box. I don't have MAC filtering on.......

I think the supplies dwindled because of a certain lush house guest. :) Or she was worried it was interfering with your tech skills and hid the rest.

I should have left when the wine ran out but my heat and hot water are off at home while they do repair work.

Can't any of you fix the damn network?

The wide supermarket aisles was my favorite. The ability for two carts to pass in opposing directions, while I walked between them was cherished.

you appear to have them, though, as you are still here. i am confused. when i lived there there was no such thing as interwebs, so count yourself lucky, i guess.

As a born and bred Brooklynite (and frequent prisoner in the suburbs), my advice to you (para-phrased from my favorite movie) is: start drinking heavily. I know what I am talking about. I was pre-med.

Option b: Hit the closest Starbucks or hotel and get on line there.
