FYI - the board doesn't seem to like ampersands - all of the text in a post after an ampersand is ignored.

  • jeffrey

Ah, interesting. Just in the title (like a url encoding issue, since it generates a url slug) or in the text body of a post itself?

Btw, I sure do lurrrv me sum M&Ms.

***edited to add. Hmm. Any chance you might have been pasting the text in from elsewhere? Sometimes other editors alter and mess with symbols beyond their basic text forms.

In a the body of a normal post. & FF3.6... if that matters.

Ah - looks like it might just be the on-the-fly preview.

  • jeffrey

Ah, okay, I see it there. That's a definite bug with the JavaScript generating the real-time preview...it would appear to not be evaluating and escaping any characters that may subsequently be interpreted in a functional string (not content) sense.

So it's probably going on to interpret the ampersand in this case as the beginning of a string to be used in functions behind the scenes and thereby no longer echoing display in the preview anything after it as expected.

Thanks, I'll see if there's any info mentioned about this issue in support of this particular real-time preview plug-in.

That functionality is there, just subtle at the moment.

If you look at http://www.brooklynian.com/forum/ or any other forum/board main page...

The titles of threads with new posts since your last visit are shown in a different color blue. We've experimented with different colors and bold type instead and it gets really messy.

We can look into similar (still subtle, hopefully) status icons as you suggest since those were very helpful at a glance on the old site. Good suggestion.

    Also...

how do I get to my profile setting? ....if I want to change my signature or my avatar?

Up at the top of any page you can click on your name ("Welcome, [username]") to access and edit your profile settings.

I don't know... I think it's looking REALLY messy on the landing page for the neighborhood forums. Not enough differentiation between topics... just a lot of thin, spindly text. It's not immediately obvious if anything new has been posted since my last visit. All in all, a LOT more difficult to use.

^^^ some monitors, or a poorly calibrated monitor, might have a hard time differentiating between the alternating gray and blue-gray background colors of the posts/topics. On my monitor, a pretty nice one that I keep calibrated for photo editing, the differentiation is really obvious.

Here's a good place to start to see if it's just your monitor.

Oh I can see the alternating bg colors just fine. It's more the messy layout, spacing, and font that are all combining to create a less-than-pleasant effect.

  • jeffrey

8thandPrez, as you might imagine it's mostly been back-end migration, integration, configuration (...consternation, perturbation, endless plug-ins mastur...hey where's Bob Dylan or the Temptations or REM when we need 'em :-) ) work to-date so please note that there are plenty of interface design and style issues have had to wait for all of that to settle.

Such is the nature of volunteer projects that are advanced only as free time allows. We hear ya on the design stuff, it'll come step by step after some other primary mover issues are resolved.

Note for comparison: Everybody also complained and disliked the new site when Brownstoner, Gothamist and others relaunched (and those were paid gigs, ha). Users weighed in, improvements were made and eventually everything settled in to the usual din of activity.

In this case, we definitely welcome constructive feedback and specific ideas or suggestions and promise to address everything as best as possible as volunteer time allows.

    Thanks!

What happened to "posts since last visit"? I really liked and used that feature a lot. That available on this software?

  • jeffrey
    jeffrey

dd, yeah that was a great feature of the prior site, personalized beyond latest posts in a general sense.

Have a look at the following:

    Topics with new posts

    http://www.brooklynian.com/forum/view/new-posts

I haven't had a chance to check it but if it's personalized like the old one, we can make a link to it up top near the rest of the "Welcome, [username]" and other user profile -related stuff.

hey, when someone edits a prior post does the new system leave a note?

"edited 4 times, last time at 4:15."

if it doesn't, this could allow me to go back and correct my typo ridden posts while making users believe I have always been literate.

....it could also allow me to change posts to not be an idiot, and then claim at no point was I an idiot.

The old format prevented both, can this be enabled after you do the 40000000000 other things people want you to do?

can you add this bar on the bottom?

In short, the current setup does not log edits or note them as before, and it would likely be nontrivial to add that (not simply a matter of installing a pre-rolled/tested plugin).

From what I have noted thus far you are certainly able to edit posts but after a time (30 min, maybe?) the whole post may be bumped down to latest instead of keeping its original position in the thread.

But please note that the above is totally untested, not confirmed. Just recalling other separate, anecdotal cases observed while testing other things.

Whatever the case, we will definitely put this on the list to investigate but I can't make any promises at this point in terms of when it may be handled in some way. I will hopefully remember to mention when it's been handled one way or another. :)

As for the breadcrumb navigation, that sounds like a no-brainer to repeat at bottom. I will add it to the short-term list and it will definitely be taken care of in the next few days, just subject (as other quick items are) to being tackled between other larger items on the plate.

So when ya see it, you'll see it. (hee)

    Thanks for the great feedback.

The main page now has two sections:

    1. Current stuff

    2. Neighborhoods and topics

In the top section, clicking on the "last post" column will take you to that last post. However, doing that in the second section results in a loop, and you don't get anywhere. The two sections should be the same.

Can we still delete a post before it is reponded to? This came in handy when my internet connection was wonky, and it would make two posts for some reason.

I could then just delete the posts that were repeats.

Aside from the basic aesthetic issues, could I request two changes that would go a long way towards making the site design more usable?

    1) Please remove or relocate the # of views located next to the post titles. It really distracts from being able to quickly skim the list of posts.

    2) Allow the table to resize itself for larger monitors/higher screen res. Right now my table of posts is squashed in the middle of the screen and most of the lines wrap, which really clutters up the design. I have loads of unused real estate that could be made use of.

    Thx.

    3) Indicate via icon or some other method that new posts have been added since my last visit (ie, the yellow envelope icon from the previous version of Brooklynian)

Ok, here's an idea. The top of the landing page presently shows these item

Topic — Add New »AuthorPostsLast PosterLatest Activity

I argue that no one cares who the author of particular thread is. Hence, we should lose the "author" column and replaced it with a "category" column, such as Park Slope, Politics, what have you.

So, if a new pizza place opened, one could decide whether they cared about it not on the basis of who started the post, but on the basis of whether it was in their neighborhood.

Likewise, those who don't like Politics could avoid clicking on anything in the Politics category.

....a good 6 hours of programming time there?
