I hear it is going to rain a lot, and be windy.

Since moving here I've been hit by a tornado, several days of blizzard, an earthquake, and now a hurricane. All within a 12-month period. I'm starting to take it personally.

Have you thought about moving indoors? It makes life much more pleasant.

Clear your rain gutters and roll down your shades or close your shutters. Most importantly, please remember, all of the Chinese places, with the exception of No Pork Halal, will still deliver emergency PuPu Platter rations.

Step 1 to remaining sane:

Realize that the radio, TV and internet all focus on the worst things that happen during such a storm. If you are prone to anxiety, turn these things off.

Stock the liquor cabinet! Ours is only missing one thing and today I got caffeine and limes so I think we're ready to be stuck inside, hopefully due to just lots of rain.

Also, what does taping up the windows do? I was imagining it being something you do if they get knocked out, but I'm hearing it as a precautionary action. Tape vs. hurricane doesn't sound like a fair fight to me.

From what I know, back in the day of 'plain glass windows' the tape would help control the shattered glass as the air pressure of a hurricane imploded your homes windows. I think nowadays, most of us have double pane windows made out of heftier material.

Before a Hurricane

To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures:

* Make plans to secure your property. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.

* Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.

* Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.

* Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.

* Determine how and where to secure your boat.

* Consider building a safe room.

Yep stocking the liquor cabinet is most important. Then comes batteries and candles. I also make sure all my phones are charged in case of a power outage.

The tape on windows helps to keep shards of glass from exploding in, the tape makes the glass fall instead of shoot in.

If winds are as forecast, we can expect to shut down entire system for a period of time.

FYI, Bloomberg is talking about no train/subway or bus service from Sat-Monday.

I predict the NYC area will have less than 10 deaths.

Five of them will be Darwin inspired.

Between now and Monday:

1. To test out his new SUV, a guy will drive it through standing water he thinks is "pretty deep". It will be several feet deep; he will drown.

2. Mid storm, a man will become pissed off that his Direct TV has stopped working, and he can not view his porn on pay-per-view. He will climb on the the roof of his suburban house to "fix the dish". He will fall off the roof.

3. Someone will be hit by a falling branch while going to purchase more beer/liquor/weed/crack.

4. Someone's basement will seriously flood, causing the circuit breakers to blow. The owner will be electrocuted as they swim over to the fuse box to turn the power back on.

5. After losing power, someone will burn down their house by using candles they have positioned on top of newspapers.

btw we are !@#$, i'll just have to wait till its all over and get calls from tenants about broken windows etc.. i thought about going to seal all the windows. but people like their windows.

Dumb people who will live:

1. Despite being without power for only 2 hours, someone will decide to burn charcoal in their garage to cook a burger. They will be sick, but live.

2. Having lost power for 2 days, someone will decide to eat meat items from their freezer without cooking them first. They will be sick, but live.

3. A motorcycle rider will crash in the storm, but live.

4. For some reason, storms make people buy incredible amounts of milk. Not wanting the milk to go bad, someone will drink all of the milk and vomit.

5. Someone will decide that all of the banks will be destroyed and tell all of the people in line for the teller that they are stupid for not withdrawing all of their money. One of the people in line will mug him after he leaves the bank.

6. Someone will get locked in their Safe Room.

7. Someone will annoy their housemate/relative so much by talking about the "end of the world" that their mouth is duct taped shut by said roommate/relative.

8. In the process of installing plywood to their homes, several people will "nail gun" or "screw gun" their hand.

9. A TV reporter will be hit by a flying object while looking into the camera and loudly exclaiming "the storm has made it really windy out!"

10. At this very moment, a guy who not watched the news in 2 weeks has taken tomorrow off to spend the weekend sailing to Delaware. He will leave tomorrow morning and be incredibly rescued by the Coast Guard on Sunday.

Ah, tape for break. That sounds, um, fun to do.

I'm making sure all of our towels are clean and dry in preparation for the deluge the might seep under one of our door but hoping I'll only need them to dry the dog off after I drag him out in it.

Saw neighbors tying down strollers. I hope Starbucks isn't boarded up.

And now to inject some reason into the hysteria:

New York has been hit by major hurricanes in the past and although there has been significant damage to costal areas, in the last 200 years only 4 hurricanes have resulted in a significant loss of life in this region

I am seriously considering taking my camera out in the storm and just taking random photos.

My friend and I are going to have a "Hurricane Pizza Party." Hopefully a local bar will be open so I can rescue forlorn lasses.

thia guy seems like a bit of an idiot. I know the KFC, though. It's on 4th Ave near Atlantic Terminal.

but there's no doubt that it's absolutely dumb and pointless. a friend of mine sent it to me and i'm going to need to ask him what this is all about.

Ok, so even though I live in a high enough place where I'm nowhere near an evacuation zone my mother has now started urging me to take the dog and go up to her place in Morningside Heights for the weekend. She does have a lot more food stashed, as well as a back yard area where I could take the dog out without braving the full street as long as the winds aren't outrageous.

I do fear she has maybe confused a hurricane with a full Zombie Attack since she also pointed out that up there family members have cars if we need to get out of the city.

Even if we get no hurricane the shutting down of the MTA could shut the city down. So, question to absolute strangers, do I take the hound, fetus, and significant other up to Manhattan to spend the weekend there?

It should be noted that normally I would be all "Yay, a storm, how thrilling". But in my current enceinte state I am far more cautious than I would be otherwise.

I think I would have to know your mother before I offered an answer.

Does she need you near her, OR does she think you would benefit from being with her?

These are two completely different motivations.

I think it's mostly the latter. Especially with the MTA shutting down she doesn't want us trapped in Brooklyn come what may. Her general belief is that this appears to be an active storm and it's best to have family close, especially when one of those family members is a master at finding food sales, and therefore has tons of food (her significant other).

I think she is also more protective of my current state. I don't find her generally to be an alarmist. That said, we haven't seen each other in a while and she did also mention it would be nice to spend a weekend together.
