So...not only is there a temporary walkway on the Sea Crest side of the street, the sidewalk across the street (on the Medgar Evers side) is also being dug up. I wonder why.

The sidewalk near ME was very uneven, perhaps due to tree roots, and was a hazard. I am glad it's getting fixed.

The demolition is now at a standstill, as a result of running afoul of the DOB. image

Thanks. Given the market, It would not surprise me if they were pouring a foundation next Spring.

I made that statement back in April 2014.   Needless to say, "next Spring"  (the Spring of 2015) has come and gone.

...perhaps they will get to work on the foundation in the Summer of 2016?

I saw some folks from asbestos abatement poking around there a few weeks ago... may be related to how they are removing it.

There seems to be two additional DOB violations levied against the property on 3/9/2016, with total fines of $3000.

And, two ECB violations from Dec 2015, adding up to another $3200.

    http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/PropertyProfileOverviewServlet?boro=3&block=01190&lot=0029&go3=+GO+&requestid=0

The fines seem to relate to failing to have a professional certify that prior conditions have been fixed, and doing work without permits.

...so, this isn't merely a matter of paying the fines.   The hearings on these violations are scheduled for late June.

    "ECB Hearing Information
    Scheduled Hearing Date/Time:   06/20/2016  8:30"

It might be a while before we see work on the site again.

This site continues to be one of the sites I believe will make a large impact on western Crown Heights:  http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/47007/the-big-18-developments-the-whynot-31-wont-stop-talking-about?new=1

Today demolition was back on.  Most of the garage structure is gone.  The chimney is still up.

The DOB site still shows some fines as being unpaid, but I don't know how often they update it.

If they are doing the work before they allowed to, I assume DOB will discover it via some means other than Brooklynian.

Hopefully someone will get video of the chimney coming down....

Let it be known that it appears the smokestack will be demolished as early as this week, and I want photos and/or video.

    Thanks

Still up as of last night:

    smokesmoke

We may want to note that each of the four towers that are planned will be about as tall as the smoke stack

Now all alone. Much of surrounding debris removed.

A little over 40 years ago Kingsboro Community College had a smokestack that was about 100 ft high. Was taken down with a wrecking ball. It seemed like half the school cut class to watch the demolition as it took place on a weekday.

It remains unclear when this stack will come down. There are still a few structures on the site that could be removed first.

Maybe they're keeping it around as a vintage accoutrement in the backyard of whatever they're putting up.

They could call the building 'The Asmus'.

Maybe it should be incorporated as an architectural element for the new residential development.

It may be taller than the present zoning allows.

Noticed today the site on Carroll is mostly gone.  They must have moved quickly over the last week, perhaps taking a break from the smoke stack site.

    Yup: http://brooklynian.com/discussion/39263/931-carroll-former-sea-crest-linen-garage-to-become-7-story-69-unit-residential-bldg#latest

However, they still seem to be making progress here. Removing debris and demolishing the remains of the last building.

    Yet the stack remains...

Debris continues to be removed from the site, and the remaining buildings continue to be demolished.

It appears the smoke stack will be destroyed last.
