I've actually been there - for karaoke on Saturday nights. What a blast! Definite old-school Brooklyn/old man's bar, but holy crap, there is some talent there on Saturday nights! I'm serious - I went with some friends after being crowded out of Commonwealth by frat boys and the dumb boards who love them, and had a blast at Timboo's.

I use the "frat-hipster" term to describe the UH types, myself. Really, you can't avoid them anywere on the weekends 'round these parts.

This might be a little off-topic, but does anyone notice the smaller 'pint' glasses in some establishments? And if so does that bother you? I've noticed the small 'pints' (probably 14oz as opposed to the usual 16oz) in 2 establishments so far, The Gate and Union Hall. I know this will make me sound cheap, but wtf?? That's a whole beer if you have 8! :oops:

I grew up in the Slope and will be moving back in the next few months. I remember going to this bar underground across from the co op on union street. I think it was owned by Dixon, of Dixon's bike shop. He used to rent it out and local bands would play there sometimes. Does anyone know if this still happens?

I hear ya. I hadn't really noticed.

I probably won't go back to UH on my own, but if I'm dragged out there for some reason I'll be on the lookout.
(Actually, my buddy's band is coming in from DC to play there next month so...)

I've been frequenting The Gate's weekend Happy Hour lately so I'll pay more attention.

Dixon has been back in the old country for quite a long time now (family still run the shop) and I haven't heard music coming out of there for a long time . . .

Apparently another drunkard already inquired about this at the Gate; they have an explanation for this posted on the jukebox. Has to do with the higher alcohol content in some of the heavier "winter" beers they're carrying now. Read it and weep.

Although, they do warn you in a sense: the beers served in smaller glasses are indicated by an ounce size next to the price. I always make note of that.

I've drank beer on 4 different continents, and that is the FIRST time I have ever such an explanation to maximize profits. Let's call a spade a spade here. I think most of us would agree that has NOTHING to do with it.

why arnt there more bars on Flatbush? Its seems odd that there are so few.

also a couple of the bars ive been to, most notably Great Lakes, dont have PBR. I dont wanna pay 3 bucks for a damn hi-life. And do 2 dollar pbrs even exist here?

edit: ha I just read the pbr stuff on page 3 which is pretty funny. Why would I pay 4 dollars for a bud when I can pay 2 for a pbr? That is if pbr is $2.

Maybe they're trying not to sell crap beer? You can get ironic PBRs in bodegas and, failing that, Williamsburg. $3 Yuengling is my go-to cheapie beer, and it's definitely more potable than PBR or Hi-Life or that other crap.

i dont see the irony in PBR. Its beer that tastes like beer and its cheap. Saying PBR is ironic is like saying a ham sandwich is ironic.

I don't either, but a few years back when the then-trucker hat crowd started swilling it, I guess people assumed - probably with some justification - that they were choosing their brew in the same manner as their headwear.

well since im only 22 I havent been drinking long enough to pre-date that. Regardless calling PBR ironic is silly.

ha speaking of that, when I was underage we used to buy Wild Irish Rose and mix it with fresca. It was horrible.

But isn't it usually only a 12oz can of PBR that's $2? Isn't that about the same per oz as $3 Yuengling?

Puppets Jazz Bar

Tea Lounge (the second on Union) has real jazz gigs. David Torn's played there a couple times! Barbes is a good deal "world" but really mixes up bookings with interesting, forward thinking players/composers definitely on the edges of the jazz/improv genres.
