    tell me more...
    about the sandwich.
exact details, like is it what I get at Ba Xuyen in Chinatown?

silly rabbit, nothing is like Ba Xuyen! but it is good, a refreshing change from your regular sandwich fare, and a lot closer than sunset park. when you are in the mood for a pint and a sandwich at the same time (which you can't get at Ba Xuyen), try the one at sidecar and see what you think.

bahn mi ROCK, flexi. pork is my favorite, but there are many options:

and Ba Xuyen, in sunset park (4222 8th Avenue near 43rd Street) is probably the best banh mi place in New York -- put it on your list of places to visit

Finally made it to Sidecar. Had the burger and I liked it even more than Bonnie's. Seriously. My friend had the club sandwich and enjoyed it as well. We did have to wait almost 30 mins for the food, though. (Another friend mentioned that he and his group had a 45 min wait for their food.) We were there on an early Sunday night and the place wasn't crowded so we were a bit puzzled by the wait. (Also got the impression they seem to have a bigger staff than they need...)

I hear that the owners think of it as a restaurant with a bar, but it seems to come off as the exact opposite. I can see myself going back to eat but not really just to drink.

I went to check out Sidecar with a group of friends last week and I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon.

We thought the menu had an odd selection of dishes but were hopeful based on some of these reviews. The BLT soup was unimpressive. The bean dip only tasted like vinegar. The entrees were acceptable but not worth a second visit.

Worst of all was the service. It became a joke at how bad it was. We had to wave our arms in the air and shout at the passing waiter everytime we needed something. At one point we all lined our empty glasses up on the edge of the table to see if he'd come bring us another round. We had to chase him down to place our order, prompt him for the specials, and practically beg for water refills.

I understand that if you're going for the 'bar that serves food' thing to not expect much from the menu. But we couldn't even get our drinks served. If you want to focus on the menu and not keep the drinks coming, that's ok too, if the food is good. It seems that they need to find their focus and go with it instead of (badly) serving french, southern, and vietnamese food with incompetent drink service.

My husband and I tried the vietnamese Ban mi sandwich as well as the salmon entree. Both were forgetable. Not well seasoned and unimaginative. The bean dip appetizers was decent. Sidecar's menu is all over the place just do basic pub grub well and you'll make a fortune.

just went to Side Car on Tuesday. great ambiance, service attentive, music not to loud, drinks tasty, and food delicious. the fried chicken was sooo crispy. i could have eaten a whole plate of chicken skins alone. the bacon succotash was quite tasty as well. we had no complaints at all. hopefully they'll become more consistent so that the reviews won't be all over the map. i'd like to see this place stick around.

I liked the "banh de," as they call it. It's on a nice ciabatta roll instead of the rice flour bread you would get in Sunset Park, hence not quite as good, but I would rate it the equal of a Hanco's or Nicky's banh mi.

I gotta stick up for Sidecar! It's not easy getting a food joint up and running but Bart and John have done an amazing job, especially considering it's their first. And the food is awesome! If it was sub-par perhaps you were there on a bad night. As for the service... well, you know how hard it is to find good help.

And hey- doesn't the place look terriffic? It just feels right, like it belongs there. The brick, the copper, that nice mahogany bar....*

*full disclosure: I built that nice mahogany bar. Hand-burnished wax finish. And I did the copper, too. And the tap handles...well, that was my idea. Sorry.
