D'oh!! This wasn't a general question. I was responding specifically to Spinningpinwheel (you know, that girl from the suburbs??). Or perhaps, did she mean you? I just wasn't sure what her point was (and besides I was kind of messing with her). :)

Wingate is the name of a high school that just closed down. I work in the building in one of the new small schools. I have NEVER heard a person refer to the neighborhood as Wingate. Maybe all the kids I work with that live over there don't know the new name?

That's a new name for the region that was developed by realtors. Wingate is still open technically, just split into magnet schools (including one named Wingate HS).

I grew up on Lincoln Road between Bedford and Rogers and it was always called Prospect Lefferts Gardens. I thinlk the realtors now call it Prospect Lefferts all the way up to New York Ave. I'd ffeel OK about calling it that from Ocean Ave. up to Nostrand and from Sterling to Parkside.

I work at one of those small schools (they aren't magnet schools) and Wingate HS no longer exists. It's now called Wingate Campus and there are four small public schools in the building.

many 6 month stints in Costa Rica and Mexico
    Miami, FL
    Wellesley, MA
    Houston, TX
    Harlem, NYC

and hey -- whoever lived in Brookings - I just drove through there a few days ago! :) I was actually helping one of my best friends, the person who got me to move to PH, in fact, drive cross country to Richland, WA (tri-cities). Brookings, SD was one of our stops, pre-Badlands (which are the most fuckin' amazing part of the US as far as I can tell).

Thanks for the correction and the right explanation. I called my neighbor whose son attends one of the schools and sht told me they were magnets. Sorry for the misinformation.

My parents were telling me that that area used to be E. Flatbush when the first moved to BK. It's weird because I also live in PLG and you ask the people here, they say they live in CH. But others say CH doesn't start until NY or BK Aves. Growing up did you consider yourself a resident of CH?

We called it PLG, but I often described it as "South Crown Heights," to those who didn't know what I was talking about (which was almost everyone in NYC).

As for not taking Brooklyn out of the girl... I grew up in the burbs, but my grandfather was born and bred in Bensonhurst and Williamsburg. He was so happy when I moved here 17 years ago. It gave him the chance to wax poetic about his youth and especially about the Dodgers. He referred to our amazing borough as "the Garden of Eden" and for many people, for all different reasons, it was and is just that.

I come from a town called Smurf Village. We used to eat lots of mushrooms and in fact lived in them. There was no crime here, which is amazing considering only one female lived in our town. They always keep things safe and can calm Briny down when he wants to make lucid inventions. There was no need for 311 where I'm from, but there was a nasty man who would come every so often and try to cook us. Other than that, things were sweet. Just thinking about it makes me miss where I'm from. :(

All this time and still not a single person has checked the box for having originally come from PH. Given this, I find it hard to fathom how anyone can be opposed to newcomers.

My first post after lurking for a while!

    Born in Bridgetown, Barbados.
    Lived in:
Suburbs of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad (17 years)
    Princeton, NJ (4 years)
    East Village, NYC (2 years)

I think this makes me OK in the eyes of snitch & co., but I wouldn't want to presume.
