2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

To put it in its full Biblical context (not something the faithful are particularly noted for doing when interpreting a 'sacred' document), the eighth chapter of 2 Corinthians is an extended appeal by Paul to the church at Corinth to increase their giving to other churches. It is not a justification of personal wealth; quite the opposite. What Paul is saying is "Be like Christ. He was rich [which means in this case rich in grace, not in bank] and made himself poor for you. So make yourself poor to make others rich."

The last thing I want to do is argue with Christians, however; so if you disagree with the above reading, assume your argument is the correct one and that I would readily admit as much if hermeneuticonfronted.
