Go, McCain! The more he fucks up, the better I feel
  • this is all still speculation, but assuming this might be true, why is it that these politicians engulfed in scandals always make the mistake of highlighting the exact values/policies that they get burned on?

or would this still be receiving such scrutiny even if she hadn't purported to be a model for "family values"?
  • One thing I'll say for Governor Palin -- she has inspired me to sign up as a volunteer for the Obama campaign. She's terrifying.

A heartbeat away from the Presidency. And based on current actuarial tables and his current age, McCain has only an 85% chance of completing a 4 year term before dying of natural causes.

  • A Saner World, by Erza Klein

    A SANER WORLD.

I just want to note, if only for the record, that in a saner country, the fact that Sarah Palin wants us to teach our children lies rather than biology, and doesn't believe in man-made global warming, should be enough to cost the Republicans the election. The other way of stating those two position is that part of her platform is telling schools to misinform kids and telling the government to ignore a preventable ecological catastrophe that could cost countless lives. But for whatever reason, those positions are considered totally acceptable in American political debate, but god forbid someone comes out for single payer health care or a gun ban. Now that would be crazy.

    ^THIS.

even if the story turned out to be true (which i doubt, though it was an entertaining idea for a few minutes), the nasty tone of all this is disgusting.

  • Meh. It's more plausible than the Obama "secret Muslim" bullshit. Obama isn't going to fight dirty, but that doesn't mean that people who want him as President can't level out the smear/innuendo playing field a little. The Repugs wouldn't hesitate for a second if this story were about Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton. It would be on every right wing radio and tv show, would be running nonstop as fact on a banner on Fox News, and would be sent as an email alert to anyone who ever gave any Republican their email address for any reason.

To rebut rumors, Palin says daughter, 17, pregnant
    By Steve Holland
ST. PAUL (Reuters) - The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin's five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins' statement said.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support," the Palins said.

The Palins asked the news media to respect the young couple's privacy.

"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.

    MCCAIN KNEW

Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

In the short period since she was announced last Friday, Palin has helped to energize the Republican Party's conservative base, giving the McCain camp fresh energy going into the campaign for the November 4 election against Democrat Barack Obama.

McCain officials said the news of the daughter's pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called "mud-slinging and lies" circulating on liberal blog sites.

According to these rumors, Sarah Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in May to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin's child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother.

A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites and partisan Democrats, but also were the subject of heightened interest from mainstream news media.

"The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama's name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their 'campaign of change,"' a senior aide said.

Members of black community upset with Palin

    by Bill McAllister
    Wednesday, July 4, 2007

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin and leaders in the black community are undergoing strained relations.

Some black leaders were not happy with educational and recreational projects in the state public works budget that were vetoed by Palin on Friday.

They already were upset that there is not a black cabinet member in the administration, a subject the governor says was broached at a meeting in April.

Alonzo Patterson Jr. of the Alaska Black Leadership Conference said he wants more face time with Palin.

"My contention is that when the governor gets around to meeting with us, the issues that are relevant will already have been exhausted. For instance, I understand that there is now an opening in the governor's cabinet for education, and that has been put out on the street," Patterson Jr. said.

Palin said she doesn't make hiring decision based on race.

"I don't think that that would be a fair process, to go look for someone based on race, to tell you the truth. I want equal opportunity for everyone. And remember too, that education commissioner, just like the fish and game commissioner, aren't necessarily my pick. But, there are the boards who serve, they will elevate the names, the nominees to me, and then I choose from the choices they've given me," Palin said.

The current education commissioner, Roger Sampson, has resigned his post, effective in August.

^THIS is the trouble with making much of the grandbaby rumor. it allows mccain et al. to act as if it is obama himself being nasty. it's a bs connection -- my name is in some things i certainly didn't write, and i'm not even famous -- but some people will pounce on it.

re: new pregnancy -- whoa! not really sure i think it should be deal-breaking, but it's interesting.

So why would Palin agree to run as VP and subject her daughter to what will be unrelenting media scrutiny?

I can only agree with Obama...from NY Times...
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/us/politics/02PALINDAY.html?hp

"Mr. Obama, in his first remarks on the matter, raised his voiced when asked whether his campaign or other Democratic operatives were working to advance rumors surrounding the Palin family.

“Our people were not involved in any way in this and they will not be,” Mr. Obama snapped. “And if I ever thought there was somebody in my campaign that was involved in something like that, they’d be fired, OK?”

Mr. Obama said the pregnancy “has no relevance to Governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president.” He added that, “my mother had me when she was 18. How family deals with issues and teen-age children – that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics.”

“So,” he added, “I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories.”

Damn good question - maybe it's ego gratification or ambition? Of course I never understood subjecting yourself to ridicule and embarrassment on reality TV shows either - and isn't our national electoral season the ultimate reality TV show?
  • On CNN right now: Mary Matlin, the dear Republican who brought us the Corsi book, finds the blog rumors implying Palin covered for her daughter despicable. I guess she should know.

Oh, yeah, and no huffin' and puffin' from her or Gamblin' Bill Bennett about unwed teen pregnancy.

Bristol (whatta name!) keepin' herselfs warm in the tundra! Whoo wee, doggies.
  • Yea,

This is all very interesting and good fodder.
But I'm not sure if this is a deal-breaker either.

Her teenage Daughter is pregnant and I'm sure it is not what she wished.
Might this make Palin a more sympathetic character to working moms...?
She is, after all is said and done, a mom.

    hmm...
  • at least it limits some of the crap we can expect to hear about lax liberal morality this cycle. they can crow about abortion (risky strategy), but they can't go on about sexed up teenagers ruining the country.
  • Palin. The gift that keeps on giving...

    http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/030805/sta_20050308002.shtml

In 2003, there were nine meth labs discovered, by summer of 2006 over 42 labs were busted.

This is just another scandal that some will jump all over and some will try to spin into a positive. However, trust me there, there is a lot of dirt on Palin that isn't "personal" and will come into light towards the debates. One of my favorites is...

Wasilla = Meth Capital of AK

From all the stories I've read online it seems under Palin's watch meth became a primary source of economic growth in Wasilla. There are people who deny it, but I have read the archives in the local news. This little town has so many meth labs that there is even a "Meth Lab Removal" company you call to dispose of it.

The best one I saw was a news article where the busted 3 labs in a week. The Phoenix metro and outlying areas (1000x the size of Wasilla) used to one of the largest meth producing areas in the country at one point, and 3 labs being busted in a week was something that didn't really happen.

So the point is... meth is a huge a social problem for this country, moreso than anything else like abortion or getting religion into schools... so how can she be qualified when under her watch as Mayor her little town became methland, and as Gov it kept exploding across the state.

Why? Because she is a terrible policy maker. She spent her time haggling over oil money, and not dealing with real issues. Great judgment and priorities!
