I can't say I think it's impossible they would try this, but it's pretty unlikely. If they do, there will be blood in the streets.

Think about it. How fast did the Patriot Act come about after 9/11 with very broad support? The next step after the Patriot Act doesn't work? Martial Law. Even the non-evangelicals see McCain as more of a pussy than a maverick. In fact I'd say it's really Palin running for President now than McCain. Ole GW isn't going to let his term end by handing the reigns to McCain or Obama who are seen as weak. Palin would go in strictly for the grooming. I'll bet any amount at any odds that if there's another attack you will not be allowed outside after 6pm.
  • i snicker at this vid.

Incidentally, both Biden and Obama supported the Patriot Act and voted for its reauthorization in 2006. Biden even went so far as to claim that it was based on something that he had drafted up years ago originally. Neither here nor there, I suppose.

What I'm really here for is to mention something I've seen making the rounds that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet. Namely, the Palin passport issue.

To summarize several sources, the gist of the argument is that McCain is Really Damn Old, and if he keels, we've got someone who got her FIRST passport a year ago, July 2007, and has made a single trip abroad. Kinda scary, eh? I guess.

Additionally, there was the TOTALLY FABULOUS Cindy McCain summation of her national security experience over the weekend on ABC:
STEPHANOPOULOS: But she has no national security experience.

McCAIN: You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.

  • The Repugs aren't going to let her talk to the media except with scripted speeches.

Yeah, I think that's become a major Repub talking point in the past few days.

    She's a real game-changer alright.

    They're about to issue subpoenas:

EDIT: Looks like her Repug cronies in the Alaska State Legislator are going to cover for her and block a subpoena.

I love that McCain is still claiming that he vetted her.
  • He met her once before picking her as VP.

    ONCE.
  • The more that comes out about Palin, the worse she seems. This will not turn out to be a good move for McCain.
    “So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

This kind of news is not going to go over well with Clinton supporters.
  • The ABC News report on Troopergate. Best coverage of this story so far.

  • Damaging but not career threatening. Nothing legally will be done. The DNC will use it though.
  • carni & boyg - why do I feel in my gut that you're 2 of only handful of people reading "the truth" :-)

  • Regarding the ABC tape:
There's no evidence that he was fired because of the brother in law. Monagen admits he doesn't really know why he was fired.
They have the right and they should fight the committee that is investigating the affair. Anytime a panel of whoever is formed to investigate "whatever" they will be bias.

The scandal here is not Monagen's firing, but Palin's abuse of her authority in trying to get her sister's ex-husband (the trooper) fired. This is not only worthy of investigation, but seriously calls into question whether she can be entrusted with far greater authority on the national level.
  • So um, the GOP is kind of undercutting their sexism argument when they hand out these buttons at the convention.

    image
  • Does each state get their own sexist button? I saw "Hoosiers for the Hot Chick" buttons on the Indiana delegation during Palin's speech.
  • Why is a relatively unknown VP CANDIDATE refusing interviews with two months to go in the election?

Will people who criticize Obama for refusing a Fox interview criticize Palin for refusing almost any interview of any kind? What is Palin scared of? What are the Republicans scared of? What are they trying to hide?
A senior McCain campaign official advises that, despite the gaggle of requests and pressure from the media, Gov. Sarah Palin won't submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she's ready -- and until she's comfortable -- which might not be for a long while -- the media will have to wait. The campaign believes it can effectively deal with the media's complaints, and their on-the-record response to all this will be: "Sarah Palin needs to spend time with the voters."

Not out of the question are appearances on lighter, fluffier television shows. But -- not for a while.
Further proof that John McCain is a terrible leader who has horrible judgment.
  • Palin's a joke, not a game-changer. Her inability to handle even friendly softball interviews...
...basically confirms the Democratic point that Sarah Palin can’t handle the national spotlight unless she’s reading off a script that someone else wrote. It’s incredible. When you’re a Republican there is always an interviewer out there willing to softball you through an awkward situation. If she can’t handle Chris Wallace at FOX News, no doubt drooling for the chance to bend over backwards and shove his head up its own ass for the good of the Party, then what sort of challenge is she ready to handle as President?

...In her short time on the national stage Sarah Palin has lied about practically everything. She lied about opposing the Ketchikan bridge, she lied about selling a state plane on eBay and about making a profit on the sale, she lied about visiting Ireland (her plane refueled there), she lied about fighting lobbyists and pork (she set a record for both), she lied about Obama’s legislative accomplishments.

...She can’t lie, she can’t tell the truth. I don’t envy the campaign for the tough spot that McCain’s rash decision left them in. At the same time I don’t much sympathy for Alaska’s lying, power-abusing tinpot Bush.
  • It's so hard to say goodbye to eggcream's excellent contribution to this discussion about how Palin is a good libertarian:

  • dude, i believe that she's racist and scary, but that "article" is semi-coherent at best.
  • so...what do you guys think of this guy claiming to be Palin's daughter's baby daddy? It's a plea for shared custody...

Dunno, but my initial feeling is that it is a soft pedal audience increaser for his self described urban rap career in LA. His uncle works on the pipeline? The pipeline isn't anywhere near Wasilla. Three hour plus drive at the CLOSEST point.

But who knows, I suppose. Stranger things have happened. Should be plenty obvious when the baby pops out, oops! After the election...

he should go for an acting career...he's pretty good
    :D
    or maybe it's true...dunno, it's the internets
he does manage to mispronounce Palin, but that could just be a teenage thing.
I kinda want it to be true. I want these evangelicals to embrace biracial babies.
  • Wow, the most ringing condemnation of Palin yet!
President Bush, meanwhile, told Fox News in an interview to be aired today that McCain "made an inspired pick, to me."
Let us review some of President Bush's "inspired picks," to date.

    Actually, let's not!

  • "inspired pick" = do anything to win an election/set the country up for disaster in the process.

    Yep, sounds like Bush/McCain
