Can you put Curtains on your Bathroom Window Please? — Brooklynian

Can you put Curtains on your Bathroom Window Please?

Hi New Neighbors on Prospect Place,

Welcome to the neighborhood. We're all glad to have you. I can tell you feel comfortable and safe here because you have lived in your newly renovated first floor apartment for 2 months now and yet have not put up curtains in your bathroom.

As a result, while sitting on my couch in the evenings, or when working in my yard, or while having guests over for a beer on the back patio, I get treated to the sight of your bare ass as you sit down on your toilet right by the window.

If interested, you can refer to past posts in which issues of race are discussed in regards to Curtains vs No Curtains. You, being white, are confirming the racial preference for No Curtains. As a fellow white person, I too prefer to leave my windows with a more open feel. But, propriety requires that the bathroom be an exception to this rule.

If you could just get curtains and put the matter to rest, we would all appreciate it. It's a big crowded city and some boundaries are always appreciated.

Thanks,
Your neighbors on St Marks Ave who really don't want to see your bare white asses anymore.

[mod note: edited to include reference to "racial preferences in curtains" thread]

  • pictures or it didn't happen :p.
  • I'll compromise and put up lace.
  • I look forward to many more postings about this building since we're going to live right next door.

I thought it wasn't officially open yet?? So maybe it's construction workers or the brokers who are "christening" the toilets for the owners??
  • whoops! just realized you're talking about on prospect place, not the new building On Prospect Park.

I'm sure i'll be experiencing similar issues when people move into glass building next door....
  • Maybe a similarly-worded note on the front door of this person's building would get his attention?

    Wow!!!

I am amazed this message was not screened out.

It is condescending, racist and not in tune what is supposed to be the spirit of this board.

I for one, could respond in a very strong and unpleasant manner to align with the poster but I have too much respect for the board to do that.

(Should the poster and ever meet, I will be more pointed in my response...)

    Best regards,

    H
  • Subject: ummm just put curtains up, ok?

I was trying to be funny, though a little irritation came through. I meant no harm, dear 'hoodies!

The Curtains vs No Curtains debate regarding race was merely a social observation discussed in this forum a while back. (Can anyone find it and add?)

Other posters noted that new residents, mostly young white hipsters had a penchant for lying spreadeagled in their bedrooms with no curtains. Other noted that residents who have had a longer stake in the neighborhood and are more likely to be black, seemed to prefer heavily curtained windows for privacy. I think there is probably a historical context relating to race and experience that makes one want more privacy. It's not across the board, just a phenomenon that will fade as social conditions become more equitable across race and neighborhood's become safer.

If you were to visit Amsterdam, for instance, you might imagine that the Dutch don't even have the word "curtain" in their vocabulary.
  • i still say take some pics and post them and shame them.
  • the concern is that this post may be racist. sounds like maybe this was a reference to a previous (hopefully humorous) discussion that involved curtains and race ... and a perhaps not-so-great attempt at making a clever reference to it.

perhaps someone can dig up that thread and link it to the post so it's clear that you are making reference to a previous post?
  • I remember that curtain thread! It was hilarious
It's become a running joke in my household.
  • Armchair Warrior, You are really good at finding...I found squat when I tried to find this old thread.

HOWEVER, it's not the exact thread I was thinking of. The one i recall, was specifically about race and nudity and curtains and such.

    Does anyone remember this?

    i win at google :p.
    PHAIL.

I think that this is the original black/white curtains stereotype thread:

alright, dude, i can see your penis... (butler pl!)
  • doh :( lol i got pwn. should of read the whole thread. :P i just read the nakedness and thought it was it.

unrelated note. i think i'm one of the very first to use osmethne back in 99. on a message board. i kept typing the typo. and some kid thought it was funny as hell spread from there. i didn't notice the typo.

I know, you told us before. That's why I used it on you.

So back to curtains and race or osmethne...
  • (reads linked thread)

    ....wow.

You know, I really wish I'd known about that thread then, as I could have gleefully thrown a whole monkey wrench into things by asking people where the concept of "lace-curtain Irish" fit into the whole curtains-and-ethnicity discussion. :-)
  • Thank you, moderator for adding the original thread! I just re-read it and still find it a hilarious snapshot of the neighborhood and era. It should be put in a time capsule or something. Race, privacy, nudity, curtains, sex...fantastic!

ProspectHeightsGirl where are you? Maybe you can coach your neighbors?
  • Subject: Original Post

Hi..Its RBG...the original poster of the "black people like curtains, white people don't" hypothesis. I stand firmly behind my original observation as it pertains to Prospect Heights. A quick walk down St. Johns place will enable you to peer into the really nice, newly updated apartments of the new people, who in these cases, happen to be white. Why don't we do an informal study? Next time you pass an apartment without curtains, take a peek a make note of the ethnicity of its inhabitants. I bet you'll find that my premise is indeed, true.

....I can't believe I'm really going to get to do this...

RBG, where does the existance of "lace curtain Irish" fit into your premise? Assuming your presence is true, does this indicate that the Irish, since there is the adage that they are fond of lace curtains, are actually ethnically black?
  • Queen...it fits into my premise perfectly...haven't you heard of the Black Irish? ;-)

In all seriousness -- do you know what the term "black Irish" actually means?

Since the mid-18th century there were small numbers of black people resident in Ireland, mainly concentrated in the major towns, especially Dublin. Many of those in the 18th century were servants of wealthy families. Slavery as such did not exist in Britain[citation needed] or Ireland at this date, although the legal position remained unclear until a judgement of 1772: Somersett's Case. Other people of colour were tradesmen, soldiers, traveling artists or musicians. Never very numerous, most of them were assimilated into the larger population by the second third of the 19th century.

    that's as may be.

But the term "black Irish" is actually of United States origin, and was actually coined to refer to "an Irish person with black hair", because a black-haired Irish person bucked the "all Irish folk have red hair" stereotype. They even had a whole tale spun to explain the origin of black-haired Irish people, stating that they had been sired by sailors from the Spanish Armada who had swum to safety in Ireland during a battle with the English navy in the 1600's and took refuge among the fellow British-hating Irish.

Of course, the real reason why you will find Irish people with black hair is due to the much more mundane explanation that, well, there have ALWAYS been black-haired Irishmen, and the stereotype that "all Irish folk have red hair" is a myth.

The moral: it's usually incorrect to attribute a single trait to an entire class of people. Like "all Irishmen have red hair." Or, "white people don't use curtains."
  • I never said "ALL white people don't use curtains."
  • i love how the posts are currently ordered:::

1.) Is this apartment worth $645K?
2.) Can you put Curtains on your Bathroom Window Please?

4.) Uhhhhh...there must be a New York Magazine article in here somewhere
