Good diets?

Yep. I did it online and lost 20 lbs. pretty easily (1-2 lbs. a week). I kept it off for 4 years and didn't feel starving.
I'm not a big group "rah rah" type, so I didn't go to any meetings. I liked the convenience of being able to log in from anywhere and also liked that if I wanted to waste all of my points on beer, that was my problem.
That said, I fell off the wagon HARD and have put it all back on. I'm getting just about disgusted with myself to start again. -
I <3 weight watchers. I did it without even paying (my mom is a lifetime member [actually 16 yeas] so she taught me the basics and I used the message boards and free net stuff to supplement) and I lost about 26 lbs in 6 months 4 years ago. I've since put back on about 8 but I stay at a steady weight which is in the low range for my healthy weight by height and age. It totally changed the way I look at food- everything that goes into my mouth still has a points value in my mind. I read labels like a crazy person (my boyfriend hands me everything before it goes into the cart so I can approve or deny based on nutrition info ha!) It also changed the way I exercise and view my own body as I became way more aware of how foods affected the way I feel. I highly highly highly recommend WW and think it's the only livable diet.
OH and I continued to drink and eat and be merry during that time. especially drink. I can't give up my wine. -
I have a question for folks who have success on WW while eating in NYC....How do you calculate your points while eating out? Or do you mainly prepare your own food for lunch and dinner?
I had some success on WW when I lived in suburbia and "eating out" for lunch and dinner often meant eating at some chain store whose point vales I could easily find in WW's handy dandy handbook..but now that I live in here I spend most of my eating out in non-chain places (thank goodness!) but I had a hard time figuring out point values for things...
Just wondering if you guys had any tips...I'm looking to start up again on my own again (too poo' and busy for meetings) and could use the advice... -
I used WW--lost 27 pounds five years ago, and have been successful at managing it since then (with ups and downs). I really lost my routine when I moved to NYC about a year ago, and gained back 16 pounds before I got it in check.
I follow WW to a point. I had great success with their Winning Points program (of the early '00s) and I have not switched to Flex Points.
I love the meetings at the Montauk Club on Sat. mornings. I like the support I get from the meetings (although I too am not much of a rah-rah joiner type). Even if I can only stay for a portion, I find that they're a good reminder of what I'm doing and why. -

It isn't anything that you can't do on your own, counting calories. But they do make it easy, and have a support system if that is your thang.
Whatchuthink? Anybody have any "success" on this one? -

While you don't know exactly how everything is prepared when you go out, its easy to kind of "eyeball" and estimate points values if you've done the plan for a while. Plus a salad with dressing brought from home is always a safe bet. I also order a lot of egg whites, grilled chicken and fish, breadless/riceless/potatoless stuff. -

Yea, and that's the thing. It's not really that easy doing it "on your own," so to speak. If it were, I'd be thin! It's the easy part, that's the key. The having a plan laid out for me that I can work with.
I did LA Weight Loss which was great, but I think that the main stimulus for my 20 lb loss was the fact that I paid them $1000. I paid them a lot of money to make sure I lost the weight, and felt a great responsibility to uphold my end of the deal. It worked- money talks! -
I really can not say enough good things about weight watchers. Watchu- if you want me to give you a crashcourse or any prelim info about the system feel free to PM me.
-
I will be doing that, Carm. Thanks so much!

WW has helped my mother-in-law lose over 80 lbs in 14 months and she has kept it off for over a year now. I have also seen my wife lose her 45 lbs pregnancy weight in less than 6 months (she exercised also). I am now on it and have lost 10lbs with 10 to go!!! The points can get tedious which is why my wife now does "core" but my mother-in-law still does the points. It works because you don't have to eliminate anything, just limit it.

So, what about the Flat Belly Diet? Anyone heard good things about that?
-
anyone ever try Chefs Diet, where they deliver your meals to your house?
-
I am too damn tired to sit and type the info that I got out of this book that I bought a few days ago. I'm not done reading it yet , but I did skip to the diet chapter cuz I couldn't wait to get there by reading through-WHATEVER SHUT UP! It had good tips on losing weight and flattening your belly etc. Anyway , tomorrow I will come back and type it all in.The book is "More Natural Cures Revealed" by Kevin Trudeau.....and NO , I didn't read his first book but it must be important to do so cuz he keeps saying , "You should read my first book , you have to read the first book , make sure you read the first book , please go [redacted] the first book...blah blah blah.
Grumpy...I'm just grumpy tonight.
Goodnight. -
I just joined WW today, actually! (I haven't been getting the results I hoped for with exercise alone.) I haven't gone to any meetings yet, but the online part of it seems really easy to use.
PM if you decide to join and want a buddy without all the rah-rah joining stuff. -
If you want to lose weight , it is absolutely imperative that you eat a substantial breakfast.
Wheew! That was a lot of typing.
The facts are clear. The vast majority of people who are thin eat breakfast, the vast
majority of people who are over weight eat no breakfast or a very light breakfast.
People who are overweight generally have a slow metabolism. In order to get your
metabolism moving , one of the most important things you can do is eat a substantial breakfast.
There are two elements here:(1) you must eat a substantial breakfast , and (2) you must eat the right kinds of food that
make your metabolism go up and get your body burning fat instead of eating food that causes your body to retain fat
and gain weight.
Everything you eat for breakfast must be must be organic and unprocessed. It cannot be out of a box
or from a company that is publicly traded. If you are eating food that you have purchased from a
publicly traded corporation , I can assure you that there are ingredients in the food that are not listed
on the label.I can assure you that these companies are secretly putting ingredients in the food to increase
your appetite , get you physically addicted to the food, and make you fat.
Types of food you can eat for breakfast:
1. Meats - Eat organic beef , lamb , chicken.Make sure these are real cuts of meat and not deli-type meats or
any type of processed meats.
2. Fish - Wild salmon , sardines , tuna , etc.
3. Fruits - Grapefruits , apples , pears , strawberries , blueberries , plums , peaches , and apricots.
Make sure the fruits are fresh and not dried. As always , make sure they are organic.
Stay away from bananas as they have a tendency to make you gain weight.
If you must have milk with your breakfast , make sure it is organic and , ideally ,
raw milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized.
Fresh organic , non-pasteurized , fertile eggs.
Example breakfast : Scrambled eggs with a side of smoked salmon , or lamb chops , or sardines , or a small steak.
You will notice that when people eat , most people get tired ,gassy , bloated , constipated , and lethargic after a meal.
Food is supposed to give you energy.Food is supposed to be fuel.If after a meal you aren't filled with energy ,
then there is something wrong with that food , or you are so toxic and full of Candida that the food can't be used as fuel.
Therefore you must do your Candid cleanse and colon cleanse.
Taking some digestive enzymes with your meal will prevent you from having any acid reflux
or heartburn , prevents gas,and allows the food to digest better.
The body needs fuel on a regular basis. Eat a substantial breakfast , and eat the right kind of breakfast , and you will see
your weight normalize and you will lose weight.
Here is an amazing product that can have tremendous benefits , as well as help you lose weight faster and easier than
ever before.Unrefined , pure , organic , virgin coconut oil is a product that falls in that "miraculous" category.
All you do is take is take one tablespoon in the morning and in the late afternoon.
Hot peppers increase metabolism.
So the simple weight loss tip is starting with breakfast , add organic hot salsa to your meals.
Ginger is also hot. Grated fresh ginger can be added to your meals.
You can also grate ginger and then squeeze it and put the juice on your food.
Hot peppers and anything that increases "heat" will work. This also increases your digestion and helps
move food through the colon quicker , increasing elimination.
1. Add hot peppers or organic salsa to all your food.Hot peppers raise basal temperature. this increases metabolism and
make you burn fat and calories quicker. It also reduces appetite.
2. Take a tablespoon of raw organic apple cider vinegar before each meal.
If you can't get raw organic apple cider vinegar then go to a health food store or go
on the internet and get apple cider vinegar or capsules.Take this before each meal.
This will increase the fat-burning furnace in your body and allow you to start burning stored fat.
3. Take a tablespoon of organic virgin coconut oil before each meal. This will help food pass through the digestive tract
quicker ,stopping the conversion of food to fat , as well as stimulate the thyroid , increasing metabolism and making
you burn stored fat even while you sleep.
4. Drink Yerba Mata tea. Drink three to four cups throughout the day; always use pure water , never tap water.
This tea will reduce appetite and increase metabolism and energy. It's important to drink throughout the day ,
starting first thing in the morning , and ideally drink some
every few hours. This will reduce appetite and increase fat-burning properties in your body throughout the day.
One simple way to flatten the tummy :eliminate gas , bloating and indigestion;speed the metabolism;and lose 5-10
pounds effortlessly is simply to take digestive enzymes with your meals. Adding digestive enzymes when you eat food
will make your food digest quicker and easier , and go through your system faster. It will flatten your tummy.
It should increase bowel movements, making you eliminate much more frequently and making the movements
much easier. Most people notice a dramatic reduction in their protruding tummy within the first week.

breastfeeding+stress+lotsa walking= dramatic weight loss
not recommended because i feel like i'm going to faint at any given moment but my delirium forced me to add my 2 cents.
i can pull my pants off without unbuttoning them. somebody feed me! -
Bananas have a tenancy to make you gain weight? That "flat belly" diet sounds like a load of shit.
-
Bananas - Is the (only) fruit that for some people can work fatting because they contain a lot of starch (more starch than sugar). Those people shouldn't eat too many bananas a day;
http://www.thefruitpages.com/bananas.shtml
I called Back to the Land on 7th Ave. , and the guy said that they have the
Unrefined pure organic virgin coconut oil - $13.29. I'm gonna walk up there later and get me a jar.
I wanna see if that stuff really works. -
I don't think anybody who has a weight problem is that way because they are eating too much fruit, especially whole fruit.

Some research done by others.
In the book he talks about a lot of stuff , not just about dieting.

"Four Easy Fat Loss Tips to Include in Your Diet - And Wave Goodbye to Belly Fat".
http://ezinearticles.com/?Four-Easy-Fat-Loss-Tips-to-Include-in-Your-Diet---And-Wave-Goodbye-to-Belly-Fat&id=1410332I'll tell you right off the bat that the "new" food pyramid guideline released by the USDA in 2005 to help folks make better food selections to control their weight... is a big stinky pile of doo doo...
It was confusing and well... dreadful...
And some conspiracy nuts actually believe there is an unholy alliance between food manufacturers and the politicians that put out this food pyramid guidelines.
I got a much, MUCH better fat loss tips for your nutrition than the USDA...
one) Eat a lot of fruits and veggies that have fiber in them.
Sadly, the majority of North Americans have a lack of fruits and vegetables in their every day diet. Adding fruits and vegetables in you diet gives you an excellent chance in the battle against fat. I would also go on to say that you should eat at the very minimum... five servings of fruit and vegetables each day. So replace all your carbohydrates with much healthier veggies and fruits. Not only these choices are better for your health... they also fill you up for a longer period of time.
two) Focus on eating clean and higher quality proteins
Not only proteins are the building blocks of life... they have other useful properties for fat loss. It helps your body control the appetite. This is what you should do... eat small portions of protein over the entire day. It will keep up your mental stamina... and prevent you from being tired and hungry. The following items are good source of high quality proteins that you should include in your diet: whey protein, wild caught fish (salmon, tuna), lean beef, chicken and even alternative sources of meat such as Buffalo and Ostrich.
three) No more refined sugars!
If you haven't done this yet... you need to eliminate ALL sugars from your diet. Unfortunately, sugars bring nothing to the table as far as your body is concerned. When you eat refined sugars... you spike your blood sugar levels... so your body floods it with insulin (a hormone). And the insulin removes the sugar and converts it to belly fat. The entire process will make you tired and drain yourself of energy. In short... cut out the sugar from your diet... and you cut out your fat.
four) Drop kick all high glycemic carbs from your diet
A rule of thumb... if the food comes in a bag or a package... it is probably processed carbs. And processed carbs will spike your blood sugar levels... read (three) above for more. Instead, eat complex carbs from vegetables.
There you go! Four easy fat loss tips to incorporate in your diet... Only eat natural and whole foods... it is a sure recipe for body fat loss.
You will never be confused about effective fat loss again. Get rid of that orange peel thighs. Wave goodbye to those cottage cheese arms...
Once and for all, fit back into your old "thin" clothes... AND spend more time with the family because you are not wasting it on useless, long and boring cardio exercises... -
lberghol-- to answer your question about eating out, Weight Watchers sells a book called the "2008 Dining Out COmpanion", which lists points for just about every chain restaurant menu you can think of. Plus it lists a general guide of dining out foods (i.e., a slice of pizza). Also, when you join WW, they give you a booklet that tells you how to calculate portions, like "Palm=3 ounces of meat/fish", "Thumb= 1 oz meat or cheese" and stuff like that.
I really like WW because there are no forbidden foods. Heck, you can eat cake and stuff (as long as you balance it out by eating healthily/lightly the rest of the day and that week). And most healthy foods like raw veggies are 0 points so you are encouraged to load up on them, and a piece of fruit like a medium apple is only 1 point.
My only caveat to fellow Weight Watchers folks is to STAY AWAY FROM THEIR PACKAGED FOOD!!! They peddle the packaged food at every meeting. It is not real food, it is nasty diet bar sh*t. Stick to the most unprocessed food you can (i.e., fruits, veggies, whole grains, raw sugar instead of Equal, etc.) and you will be healthiest.
I'd love to hear from more people on WW. I like it so far. The meetings are very encouraging. There are a lot of folks at my meeting who have lost 40 or more (one lady 100) pounds and have kept it off for years. The weight loss process is much slower than with other diet programs- expect to lost 1-2 pounds a week- but it is real weight that you are losing, and you learn to be aware of what (and how much) you eat and to control portion sizes.
Someone else asked about The Flat Belly Diet. I was dumb enough to purchase the book. Let me sum it up: Eat monounsaturated fatty acids (or "MUFA's" as the book calls em, i.e., olive oil) with every meal. That's pretty much all I gleaned from that book. -
I'm on WW. Have lost 25 pounds and been able to manage it (mostly--last year was tough) successfully since 2002.
Agree with you on the processed WW crap they sell at the meetings. As my leader was reading a study about the "dangers" of high fructose corn syrup, someone in the meeting piped up to say "Hey, that's the second ingredient in this oatmeal!" Besides, I find that, for the most part, you can do just as well points wise with unprocessed alternatives as you can with WW's stuff--and it's cheaper. -
I lost close to 40 lbs on WW a few years ago and I swear by it.
I didn't eat their food though, I would rather cook and prepare my own food.
Recently was put on a low dose of steroid and about to head my ass back to WW for a refresher.
Anyone wanna join me? -
I'm on the verge of joining. So, where are the good meetings?
Rachel- you still down? -

Do it!
Rachel- you still down?
I like the meetings at the Montauk Club on Sat. mornings. The 9AM meeting is, IMO, the best. It's a tad early for me, but it gets me to the Greenmarket early, and I still have time for the gym. All in all not a bad thing. -
I AM Now working 12-8 pm so I can probably do an early weekday meeting or a Saturday meeting.
I can attend meetings or a Meeting lol near Prospect heights or anywhere off the 2, 3 line
Yes I am down!!!
