You have vaccuum everything first, to get up the nymphs and eggs. Remove everything fabric and pourous form the aprartment (closthes, drapes, etc.) in sealed plastic bags. Then wash that shit in hot hot water and then dry on high heat.
While you have everything out of the apartment, you have to have an extemrinator use sevral types of insecticide, including spray, injections of powder into the walls (they have to drill holes) and behind moldings. When they did my old apartment they used so much there were actually pools of insecticide on the floor.
Then you put everything back and pray a couple days later (you have to sleep somewhere else for a couple nights).
Usually you have to repat the above at least twice.
TOTAL EFFIN NIGHTMARE. -
Shudder. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeew. I had to deal with the bastards last fall and I swear I still have nightmares. I had all my clothes washed and dried in a "clean" room, was sleeping on an aerobed in a pristine bedroom with all the lights on and a bottle of spray alcohol in hand and I still got bit- HUGE ithcy welts that even my doctor wouldn't touch-- I mean BRIGHT RED RAISED almost half an inch welts ALL OVER. Suicide seemed the only answer. No joke I pray none of you ever have to deal with it.
As far as I know, they still live in that evil place. Luckily, I do not. -

Makes you wish that you had roaches. The Devil is a bed bug.

There's another, easier way to get rid of bedbugs...I know someone who used a poisonous sulphur candle and it worked really well.
It's illegal in the US, but it can be ordered from overseas. The exterminator my acquaintance employed - the guy came three times and couldn't get rid of the bugs - admitted that he would've used the candle if it were allowed. -
You could also make your own sulphur candle from beeswax and sulphur, apparently.
http://website.lineone.net/~dave.cushman/fumcandle.html
Seems to be an old-school treatment for killing mold/bugs/etc in greenhouses. Obviously a greenhouse is fall less likely to burn down with an unattended candle burning than your apartment would be.
Burning the candle produces sulphur dioxide, which is apparently toxic to humans in large quantities (and an eye/skin irritant in small qualities), but finds its way into cracks and crevices to kill the bugs. Sulphur dioxide is used in small quanitites in red wine and dried fruit as a preservative (as in "contains sulphites"). -
i think it's not so super-awesome for lungs, either.

Right. It forms sulphuric acid in contact with water vapor in your lungs. Sulphuric acid + lungs = bad. -

Hey Armchair, I talked about this as being the wrong way to fight against the
Problems with the building. But kat283 seems to have dropped off the topic. Stealing's NOT the answer. The builders are NOT the problem, the
Landlord is.
What is the purpose of adding another floor, when the lower ones are infested with Bedbugs? I guess when the penthouse gets them, they'll add another floor.

Subject: new mattresses on street
I'm sad to report that there's a new mattress and boxspring sitting in front the building. They were put there last night. I can only assume the mattresses belong to the people who moved in two weeks ago---call me a jacka** for assuming, but I just have a hunch. SUCKS! -

You're NOT Jacka** RBG. I think your hunch is correct. Every week there's a mattress being thrown out. It's a F*cking plague!
Anyone who's going to rent from that place should make the reality agent
sleep in the building for 1 night. That will learn her.

In this context, the typo "reality agent" is particularly gigglemaking.

I didn't say it was a good way to go about solving the problem. I'm not an idiot. But like i said, no noise pollution for a few weeks made life a bit more pleasant. Perhaps my sarcastic and witty tone of voice got lost in Internet translation. -

JUST in case it wasn't clear before, if you go about using this kind of remedy you need to clear out of the place for several hours while it does its thing (like a bug bomb), and seal the room you're using it in. Then air out once you return.

Subject: I LIVED IN THAT BUILDING...
i lived in that building for 3 months! the landlords sucked and didn't give a rats ass! my roomie was being bitten! we spent so much money and couldn't get rid of them. we told them we were going to sue!
the entire building was filled with them!
they wouldn't take care of the building. they knew there were bedbugs in our apartment before we moved in! apparently the people living there before us had them too! -
My sympathies to everyone with the bed bugs. I had a problem with them for almost a year and I know what a nightmare it is!!
-
So now that the whole world knows about this building, is something going to happen? Will those that live there finally have it taken care of?

There's a post in the other thread about this building from the owner of a pest control company letting folks know his company has just been hired to do a full extermination job on the building. Of course, it's pretty sad that it evidently took a story on NPR to get the owners to do this, but I'm just hoping for the residents of the building that it goes well. -
Subject: green earth pest control + 349 St Johns
you know what's really funny about that, when we first realized we had the bugs in the building we called green earth and 6 other pest control companies. we told the landlords, we told the "broker" who is the "landlord's" mother and they did nothing about it.
it's funny that after spending thousands of dollars and moving out of the building AND having a story on NPR about it, they are finally doing something. -

Sadly, that's what it takes to get things done.

Good News Everyone! Relief is here. My name is Josh Alpert and I am the President of Green Earth Pest Control. The owners of 349 St Johns Place have hired Green Earth Pest Control to remove the Bed Bug infestation from the entire property. I will keep you posted.

Subject: slumlords
The whole set-up at 349 is wrong wrong wrong.
Helen Rothstein of Rothstein Reality takes brokers fees and then acts on behalf of her husband owner at RSDO Associates, whilst her son is the ineffectual, but not unfreindly, building manager Mike. (I quote a phone message she left "we don't want to hurt you, but we don't want you to hurt us either..." yikes! )
The way i see it this is a total racket which actually benefits from people coming in and living there only for a few months until the bed bugs get too much: new tenants = new brokers fee + last month deposit.
I'm pretty sure this is entirely illegal, or at least violates Mrs Rothsteins supposed brokers license.
SO glad to be out of there. -
Subject: 349 St. John's - THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP!
Greetings -
My roommate and I are looking to rent a place in Prospect Heights. We have been calling management companies and building supers looking to find a place. We called 349 St. John's and the process went smooth as silk.
Thankfully, my roommate found this blog and learned why it was so easy for us to rent a 2 BR. Needless to say we are still looking for a place.
Its great what you have here, and I am very thankful something like this exists to keep current neighbors and future neighbors aware.
I saw the post from the Green Pest Company. I hope they are able to get rid of the problem for those living there now.
Peace -
What about neighboring buildings? Does anyone live next door to this place? It seems highly likely that these bugs will spread along the block. All it takes is one surviving bug to move to the next building and start a new infestation. Best of luck to everyone in the vicinity of this building!
Howdy, Stranger!
