Are you saying that these people reading the site see a post they do not like, assume it is a white person, and then will be hostile to all whites because of it? Wow, that sounds pretty racist to me.

If they are so bothered why don't they make a post refuting whatever post they feel wronged them? Or are people just upset when they are called on their poor behavior?

The excuses folks come up with for kids acting like jerks are amazing... as if it's everyone's fault EXCEPT the kids...

The teens on my block are fine, FWIW. Perhaps that has to do with the fact that a lot of older people sit out there too. Dunno.

And yes, it is totally arbitrary and capricious and strange at times as to what is OK and what isn't. For instance, if I were to call you a silly name, _that_ is not being nice, and I would get the smackdown. Were I instead to tell you that I was going to find out where you live and kill your children, _that_ is OK and acceptable.

As always, one is more than welcome to take one's toys, leave, and start one's own board with one's own rules.

from a mod perspective -- or at least this mod's perspective -- being "nice" means showing basic civility towards other folks on the board, even those you disagree with. it means avoiding blanket "you people" statements that are designed to start fights, not foster discussion.

it's pretty subjective, true, but we do try for some measure of objectivity -- for instance, if i'm embroiled in a discussion that's pissing me off and i read something i think may be over the line, i generally ask for a mod who isn't involved in the discussion to take a look at it and make the call.

as is noted in the "ask brooklynian" thread, the thing to do if you disagree with a mod's decision is to ask an admin about it via pm. perhaps i'm biased, but i'm very impressed with the level-headedness of the admins on this site. they don't always automatically agree with me just because i'm a mod.

very, very few users end up actually banned from the site, and i can't think of a time when a banned user didn't first have one or more "time-out" periods and come back from those time-outs still flaming and trolling.

certainly, there's plenty of content on the site i disagree with, too, but for the record, we do try.

BTW, as far as the "white" thing, I have found the mods to be _far_ more tolerant and likely to let go black racism than white racism on these particular boards.

Having said that, I can understand a possible point made re: food stamp as being thinly veiled, etc.

sounds confusing.

not all of the mods are that, either. not sure any are, but i don't want to rule out anyone's deep inner confusion. the mods i've met seem pretty bright, though.

I'm quite Gothy and dark myself. Does that help Daver?

Can someone tell me how to determine someone's race based solely on a post they make? I've never figured out how to do that.
