Race on DH (again)

The thought of you sitting at home trolling "other boards" as well as this one with the same race-baiting comments makes me laugh. So fearsome and outraged!

I must be getting old - for once, I don't see the point in humoring someone that clearly has too much time on their hands...

....the racial characteristics of prepetrators of child sexual abuse and rape seemed to be the focus of most of this discussion (calling this thread a "discussion" may be too generous), but -nonetheless- this focus received the majority of the 15 minutes I devoted to this task. Forward we go!

In the first minute, I quickly realized that this strange internet tool showed me that there were a lot of agencies out there that seem to spend a lot of time and energy compiling data on the characteristics of crime victims and offenders. Many of the sites bothered to list race, but none seemed to put a lot of weight on it ...the sites focus more on gender, age ,etc.

The remaining 14 minutes was spent reading about Child Sexual Abuse and rape (a topic I think that makes everyone's skin crawl). I must also say Forensic Sociology, and related fields have never been much of an interest, and there is that whole work thing that my boss wants me to create...

So, the microsummary: None of the sites below appeared to come out and say "x race is far more likely to commit sexual crimes (against a child or against an adults) than y race". And, as a result, I continue to believe that fools exist pretty proportionately by race. Once and a while you get an outlier who happens to be x race, but overall it seems to even out.

...in this case, "fools" is a generous word. Rape and Child Sexual Abuse is repulsive stuff....

Basis for belief: I found a lot of data stating that victims are very likely to know the offender ....given how neighborhoods are set up in much of the country (including NYC) kids may be more likely to know people of their own race.

Although getting more diverse, the US still has a greater percentage of whites than blacks ...so its important to keep this in mind as we read the data. ...more white kids, more white adults = more white sexually abused kids, more white sexually offending adults. I wonder if the same goes for adult rape, but have to imagine that adult's circle of "potential offenders" is larger.

But, each hypothesis should be further explored by someone who has more time and interest. Sounds like a dissertation in the making....

But, on to the data ...let the readers reach their own conclusions. (or shake their head wondering why I bothered to try to make the discussion intelligent)

One can have a favorite sex offender registry, who knew!?

Some of the states have sex offender registries that are actually searchable by race, but to reach any conclusions about whether a given race is over (or under) represented, I would have had to look up the census info for each of the states (this would have exceeded my 15 minutes).

The same caution should be used with pictures, especially if a large facility (say, the shelter at the Atlantic Armory) can be counted as a persons parole/offender registry address. Lots of pictures of black guys in the offender registry for 11238, not sure if I can blame the Armory for it. ...type upstate zip codes to find pictures of white guys who have committed sexual offenses.

If you've got more time, and interest, and feel like becoming depressed about what men (yup, the offenders are mostly men) do to kids (kid victims are mostly female, but also male) and women (yup, the adult victims seem to be mostly female), feel free to read all the websites and their associated cites.

I'd keep Lexapro handy if this was my plan for the evening. But, back on topic:

Assuming that I am not the only one who would welcome a debate based on the facts (perhaps the biggest assumption I've made in this inane post), it wouldn't surprise me if a similarly bored reader could find info that points out that kids from impoverished backgrounds are more likely to be abused by non-family members ....and that their abusers were likely to be people with power over them (like teachers, MDs, police, coaches, etc). (seek bored bloggers, seek!)

But its never simple:
On a national basis, people with power are more likely to be white. So, whites might do more of the non-family abuse of kids.

Are sexual predators attacted to professions and positions where they will have access to children ...absolutely. Does it mean that everyone in such professions is likely to be a predator, absolutely not.

The race of men who rape women wasn't researched, but feel free (and remember to have the lexapro nearby)

Many argue that that the criminal justice system is racist/prejustice, etc. Poor people are stuck with public defenders, whereas money will buy one a good lawyer. ..people with more money (in this country, this is disproportionately whites) are more likely to be found not guilty. There are lots of other sources of biases as well: If your victim doesn't have faith in the criminal justice system, they don't show up. etc, etc.

You won't find a defender of the criminal justice system in this rambling post, but you will find a lazy, half-witted attempt to start this discussion off by posting stats from a variety of sources. ....

The sites that present the race of the offender as per the victim may avoid some of the bias of the criminal justice system (there may be differences in prevalence rates between groups accused vs convicted) , but then end up creating others.

...but such reports may be the best we can locate without getting that PhD. ...and have got to be more objective than finding newspaper articles about a white guy who did horrible thing x, and a black guy who did horrible thing y.

You don't get it. You are the minority in most of Brooklyn. My block has a whopping 4 white people on it. If someone makes a post about our block we know its one of them. Most of the other blocks around have a similar number of whites. How do we know its one of them? Cause we would never write shit like that plain and simple. Get it now? I also find it pathetically amusing that some of you think your posts don't ooze whiteness LMFAO!!! Why would you even care unless you are ashamed of who you are? You are white. Get used to it.

If Black on Black violence is very high and Black on White violence is very high in Prospect Heights, what is the point of people moving into the neighborhood? Basically your statement, as I read and understand it, is that living in a neighborhood that is predominately Black it is a given that you will get mugged by a Black person. Don't know if that was your meaning or not, but that is the way that it reads.

From my understanding, crime is not committed based on race but has more socio-economic reasons, and since you cannot determine what most people socio-economic condition is, it is foolhardy to attempt to protect yourself based on the "race" of a person.

Be that as it may, if you feel uncomfortable passing a group of people then you have every right to cross the street. Personally, I don't care what race a group of people are because if I feel threatened I am not going to take into account what race or combination of races make up that group. Being mugged is being mugged regardless of who is doing the mugging. Also being mugged is not usually a group effort, so avoiding a group may make you more susceptible to being mugged.

Man i got beat up by a group of Latino and black teenagers early last year, i saw them crossing the street on Pacific and i was on my way home, just as i passed Noo Na i heard them behind me, laughing and stuff, i did not think about it because i have lived here most of my life and i never had any troubles with anyone. Next thing i know i see something coming at me from the corner of my eye and next thing i know about 20 of them are beating the shit out of me in front of the chuch, i managed to throw a punch or two but manage to get away pretty quickly. I had a swollen face , called the cops but as usual they are useless unless they are giving you a ticket for pissing late at night when its raining. Nowadays , when i see a group of teenagers i just cross the street, i don´t give a fuck, if they are black, white, chinese, hasids, native americans or hindus, these kids don´t give a shit about you, they are out to hurt people because they think its funny. And when i thought about it later and walked by the church again, i saw a metal rod close to where i was attacked. If i would have seen it i would have bashed a head or two and it would have been in self defense!
