Price Crunch?

Could use this info this well as I am thinking about joining this weekend.
Thanks. -
I pay $94/month and am pretty happy overall
-
I pay $89.99/mo. Crunch is okay--just okay. I don't know how the upcoming expansion will change my opinion one way or the other. The location on Flatbush, however, is extremely convenient for me. Overall I like the atmosphere. It's definitely a place where you can go, work out and leave. If you want a hang-out lifestyle-ish type of place then this Crunch is not for you. I wish that the equipment was slightly better maintained, and the facilities less cramped. Again, maybe the expansion will take care of this.
You can also pay a higher fee and have access to Crunch gyms city-wide. It's an upgrade that you can make any time. I decided to start with the one-gym only option and switch if I found myself wishing to use the Crunch right near my office. So far, it hasn't happened.
I would also check out Eastern Athletic. -
Is the 89.99/mo for month-to-month, or are you on an extended contract?
-
I took the 12-mo contract in Jan.
-
anyone know what Eastern Athletic is charging?
-
I recently took out a two year contract, which makes it average out to about $55 a month. That was a special deal, but you can probably talk them into extending it.
As for the club, yes, it's cramped. But, as others have noted, they are expanding and that MIGHT help out. The music is definitely annoying (IMO) and too loud, especially on Tuesdays, which is when they have a DJ there. I avoid that night for that reason (even headphones can't block out the music they play on Tuesdays). I joined a gym, not a dance club. I just recently joined, though, and then almost immediately went on vacation, so the other nights might not be as bad. And I have never been in the mornings, so I can't speak to that time of day.
Good luck.

I thought that I was the only one who found the music annoying. But personally, I like the DJ (but I have lame-o musical tastes). I heard, however, that the club will probably discontinue the Tues DJ--lots of members are unhappy.
Good luck.

Averaging out to $55/mo sounds like a good deal. Is there an initiation fee on that deal? And is that the one where you pay the 2 years upfront?
I started looking into it a year back and then got annoyed with all the non-transparent pricing...so any details you can provide would be great! -
The initiation fee was waived as part of a special they were running a month or so back. I did pay for the entire two years up-front, but I also have access to Crunch's around the city, which is nice in the off chance I move.

The benefit of having all-Crunch access would certainly be a draw for me in paying the $1300-something up front. But all that money upfront??? I'm not sure I would be comfortable doing that. Since it wasn't my decision to make, however, it's a moot point.
Do you find that you're using the Crunches elsewhere? -
I've not had the chance/reason to use another Crunch yet. It was included in the package, so it's just nice to have if I ever need it.
-
I've paid about $80 a month for seven years, since it was the Park Slope Sports Club.
There's been slight changes over the years, but nothing that's kept me from doing my thing there. The new expansion will definitely help around peak time, when there's sometimes a small wait for the better cardio machines.
Classes were better before Crunch took over. If you're just casual as to your exercising, you'll be fine, though. I'm not impressed by the trainers at all, but big gyms rarely have good personal training.
Right now, I'm in the middle of a pack of sessions at the new 5th Avenue Fitness Collective, which is really an amazing place. Anyone who really wants to make a commitment to getting into really good shape should stop in. It's made an amazing difference for me in 12 sessions, the people there are knowledgable and really develop a relationship with you, and the workouts are kick-ass and addictive. I'm using Crunch on the days i'm not at the collective.
I'd definitely recommend Crunch to anyone in the neighborhood. -
To answer a couple of other questions.....I've only used one other Crunch during my time there, when i was working in FiDi and had access to the one in Lower Manhattan. Other than that, i've used nothing other than my membership to the Fitness Collective.
Yes, the music is loud on Tuesdays and you'll feel the occasional rageful urge to punch random pole dancing students, but i'm mostly able to block it out. -
I pay $84 a month. I signed a one-year back in June 2007 and am now on a month-to-month.
I'm not too impressed. Weeknights can get annoyingly crowded and cramped. Often I can't get a good stretch session in after my workout because there's simply nowhere to sit down and stretch. And they seriously need to expand the locker rooms. (Not that I've seen the men's; I assume it's the same cramped size as the women's.)
The main thing this gym's got going for it is its location. And a few super-nice staff members. -
i pay 84 a month with i think a one time $100 initial fee
crunch is okay, there weight room is really small and as another poster said the DJ they have there is really annoying. he will play something like lil wayne and then play a joy division song. trying to appeal to everyone but just ends up getting on peoples nerves.
best thing it has going for it is location. i only wish it was on my side of flatbush so i didn't have to play a game of human froger to get there.
its also nice to know a hot shower is only 3 blocks away if something goes wrong in your building. -
I pay 84 a month for Eastern Athletic. I think it's worth it for the pool and the nice views from the elliptical area.

[mod note: this post is more than likely a shill by a Crunch owner or employee. Business owners: please do not shill on Brooklynian - you will be named and shamed! - DH]
Well....I have been a member of the Crunch gym on Flatbush for the last 2 years and I honestly really like it. I have access to all locations but I feel at home over there. The front desk girls are great, i have a friendly relationship with most of the staff, not to mention, there's not a class that i don't like..especially the pole dancing class
. Long story short Crunch is the place to be. -

Will definitely be checking it out when my 12-month expires at Crunch. -

Crunch Park Slope is amazing ! You dont see the crowds like the manhattan clubs. Whenever I go to work out no matter what time, I can always get to a cardio machine. The classes are unheard of, who knew that you can take classes (i.e. african dance with live drums, jumpstart, etc.) and actually get results. The management is responsive. Once I had an issue and they resolved it right away. This place is the best place on earth ! -

Yeah, people....if you are going to shill...at least tell us what the current "specials" are or something half-useful. -
wow....that was an incredibly shilly post.
i guess you can believe someone who shills on their first post ever, or you can believe someone who's been there since 2001.
i don't think the cardio area issues are that bad. they're worse for me because of my insistence on only using about five machines there. hopefully i'm correct in spotting more of those amongst those being set up on the first floor.
Fitness Collective just got one of the newest Precor ellipticals, which just rocks the ass out of any of the older models at Crunch, plus the Arc Trainers, which are my favorites.
Front desk staff is a pretty mixed bag. There was a girl working Sunday nights who was just completely unprofessional and to whom I complained to Tom about several times. I'm generally not impressed with the staff there. Tom's a great guy, and Greg the head trainer is a great guy. I could do without the rest of them. -
I guess I'm the sucker, paying $94 (which includes access to the other Crunches around the city- the one in Ft. Greene has some good classes before work FWIW).

The what?! "...the pool..."? -
is anyone aware of an option in the nabe that's less than ~$85/month?
I'm not a frequent gym user (prefer to be in the park). -
I pay around $32 a month in the Bed-Stuy YMCA with a Freelancers Union discount. It's newly renovated and very pleasant. No neurotic people like the Park Slope NYSC I used to go to. It's a short 10 min bike ride from PH.

I pay $79 a month but i'm a state employee.
