I loved the caramel apple spice !!! mmmmmmmm Have to try that hot choc.

    SUZIE .......... JANET anyone else.

STOVE TOP COFFEE POT - speaking of coffee pots I get this catalog called fresh finds and in it are 4 size's of the stove top PERCOLATOR, this one has a cool touch wooden handle. www.FreshFinds.com item#E1424

I am a TEA person but with all this coffee talk going on for days I went to D. D.'s and bought myself a coffee. Light & sweet for me
  • I'm with you Carol - prefer tea myself. A friend of mine lives in England and got me hooked on Typhoo - which is the British equivalent of our Lipton or Tetely - but way better, stronger. I love it. I was buying it from a store on the lower east side in Manhattan (at 2x the price) but Fairway supermarkets carry it. My only problem now is getting to Fairway in Brooklyn. If you can get to Fairway you should try it. It's about $5 for 80 teabags, but well worth it - decaf is slightly more expensive - but you don't know it's decaf. When I drink coffee it's sweet and light for me too!

    Lunch time. Yeah! Later.
  • I am back. Moved to another location in school. lol. (janet).
  • Carol...thanks again...your always around when Im lost
I have to get it...I think I like the way the house smells more than drinking it...lol
  • Hi EVERYONE!

Hope you are all healthy and happy. The weather has changed so quickly. I don't like the cold and it is motivating me to pick a date to move to Florida. We just got back late Monday night.

While we were there, we attended the Suncoast Festival that celebrates the end of the summer and the return of the snowbirds. I went into the Italian tent that sold 'all things Italian.' When I walked out, the owner ran after me and said "Excuse me, are you from Brooklyn?" - I said "Yes, how can you tell?" She said "I just can; I am from Brooklyn too." She said she is from Park Slope (Kensington area? - think down by Cobble Hill, Promenade?). Told her about you all and the fun reunion.

    Dear Warren, OLD GOAT -

You just warm my heart! What beautiful 'story' you have written. I look forward to going back and reading your other posts (I have to catch up). These memories are very valuable to me, and I can pretend it's my dad telling of days gone by.

You mention the horse-drawn carts. My dad (Anthony "Tony" Bruno) was, what was known back then as a 'counterman' (I know because that is what's on my birth certificate, circa 1952). He had a horse named Jimmy and had a luncheonette on a horse-drawn-cart. He would go down to the docks and bring breakfast and lunch to the longshoremen. I remember as
a little girl, going to the stable to feed the horse on the weekend. Guess that opened the door for a career opportunity for dad; he eventually became a longshoreman - who also fought in the War.

Dad actually got what was considered a 'war injury' - even though he got it playing softball with his troop. Had a metal plate put in his knee. Don't worry, he wasn't honored as a hero, just a fun story that he re-told many times within that context.

Thanks again for the memories and for a chance to share one about my dad! GOD BLESS YOU!

    ------------------------------------------

    ALL:

Regarding the discussion of coffee and my coffee of choice:
At home, I only drink Starbuck's Christmas Blend. It has been my favorite for years. As you'd guess, it is only sold during the holidays so I buy a case (or ask Santa Claus to bring me some). I love it! And of course I perc it in my special Farberware pot, that I won't let anyone but ME clean.

    Love & Blessings to All,
    Francesca
  • FARRELL'S BAR

I remember when we had the reunion Terry's boyfriend later that evening was on duty for a bridge jumper on the Verrazano.
My husband told me there was another jumper last night and it turns out to be:

The owner of FARRELL'S BAR & GRILL BKLYN. Danny Mills.
I didn't know he also owned Rudy & Deans Rest. in Staten Island. The write up on him says Ralph Nader nicknamed him "Street Corner " because he could always be found telling stories about LIFE in BROOKLYN.
Big write up on him, Oct.21 S.I. Advance Obitu.
  • Hi Franny ...good to meet you...were you ever a Teacher?
p.s. Im gonna go broke on here...now I have to go get Christmas coffee.....lol

Carol ... is your husband on the job or was he stuck on the bridge?
Im not sure but I think I remember seeing Danny Mills standing outside of Farrell's with a white apron on all the time...not quite sure!
  • FRANNY

WELCOME BACK !! I just posted last nite I miss your stories & there you go with one on your dad. Old Goat is great ! (Warren)

Hope you have your warm pj's LOL
  • Hi Suzie - are you talking to me? (I think there is another 'franny' on here.) So just making sure...

    If it's me:

During a long duration of my corporate career (and in my volunteer life)
I am an 'adult educator' so my students were/are adults - Vs. being a teacher (I interpret 'teaching' = children/young adults). So other than teaching CCD, I wasn't a teacher. I 'taught' mostly for AT&T, Lucent-Technologies; and many of other companies. I talked about this in an earlier Post, when we were all on the old/original Brooklyn Site/Blog.

Curious about why you ask :?:
Were you a student? Or are you psychic?

And most important Suzie, nice to meet you too!

  • HI CAROL -- Nice to see YOU!!!!

Hope you and the family are doing well.

Yes, I still have my PJ's - but I gave away most of my winter cloths at the end of the Spring.... Thought we'd be moving before the next frost. Fortunately, I did salvage my winter coat. Poor Judy Occhigrosso-Catalano, she sent me an email this morning - she is coming North Nov 5th and has to borrow a coat. Good lesson learned for me!

Yes, Warren the Old Goat is great - A BLESSING!

    Take Care & Love,
    F xxx
  • SUZIE

My husband only told me about it because of traffic.
I have passed there many many times . I know alot of people do know of Farrells and my brother went there now & then, thats why I posted it.
Wonder if his jumping had anything to do with this financial mess going on.
  • Girls, I found the coffee pot in a hardware store, believe it or not!!!
  • DEBBIE
bet it is cheaper in the store where you found it then in the catalog I found it in. $29.00 Does it have a wooden handle around the metal ?

    KAREN DRITTO
I have been wanting to go to Fairway for the longest time. It is down by the new Ikea Red Hook. I will try that tea when I get there.
  • FRANCESCA AND MARILYN HORAN

I just want to make sure , so anyone can send a recipe to you Franny & we will get to have each others recipes when it is done ?

And Marilyn , we are to write our own memories /stories of growing up in the neighborhood and send them to your email and not to worry you will correct them if need be.

If any help is needed ( ? ) in any way. Let me know

Glad you tried it and gave you some joy!!!
I don't know if you like "Toffee Nut" but the "Salted" Signature Toffee Nut Hot Chocolate from Starbucks is out of this world delicious. And don't forget whipped cream!!!!
(you would think I had stock in this the way I promote it,) but I don't.
I should only be so lucky! But, it's really good and I just wanted to share it with all.
I still have the old fashioned aluminum coffee pot that used to occupy my toddlers for hours just figuring out how to get the pieces in right! If only I can get them to do that now!!!!!
It's 31 years old!!!!! Makes the best coffee! lv ya

I was mentioning to my in law what you said about the kids playing with the coffee pot. You made her laugh because she remembers a day many years back they were waiting for the coffee to brew & it was taking way to long so she opened it and there was a #2 yellow pencil in there in place of the stem. The kids replaced a part ! and she was to blind to see it was a pencil. She still has her pot also....... WITH THE STEM.
  • Hi Franny ...yes I meant you ....my sister always spoke well of a Teacher named Fran Bruno...it had to be in St Johns....anyway stay warm out there!

and as for the famous coffee pot.... I just got back from Home Goods, Linens & Things, Bed Bath & Beyond and Stop & Shop and NO COFFEE POT....Deb where did you get it in Bklyn?
I even went into Starbuck's by the Mall for the Christmastime coffee....no luck there either ....I should have just asked you Festina when it comes out? So, I guess back to my farberware....lol

I guess I wasn't the only one who didn't spend a fortune in Toy's R Us to keep the kids busy (only for them to get bored again after 2 minutes!!) LOL!
Years ago, (did I just sound like my MOTHER, Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! - we were so much more creative with the kids in having their time occupied. The coffee pot for instance, or sitting with them and coloring, or taking them to enjoy a day in the sprinkler at Dyker Park in Brooklyn, then a hot dog from Mike's stand outside.

What did you do to keep the kids busy that didn't cost a fortune?
Anybody? Just chime in if you want.

But thanks for the laugh, Carol. Me and mom appreciated it!! lv u fes xxoo

[quote="I should have just asked you Festina when it comes out? So, I guess back to my farberware....lol

I would go into the cheapest hardware store, and I'll bet you will find the old fashioned aluminum perculator coffee pots there. Look it up in Google or try National Wholesale Liqidators on Forest Ave on Staten Island or Doody's on Victory Blvd. In Brooklyn, try Berta's on 18th, I know I have seen them there. I definately know there is an old fashioned hardware store in Spring Lake NJ who sells them.

The Christmas blend from starbucks is not in yet. You guys will be the "second" ones to know, LOL! lv fesxo
  • Thanks Festina -----> Im on a mission....lol.

I remember in the late 60's when there was a snow storm....we dug a cave in the snow bank in the street by the johnny pump...and about 6 of us hung out inside sitting on cardboard....thinking we were so cool....funny how we never thought of a snow plow coming up the block....and running our butts over...those were the days.

...so true Suzie. Wasn't that so fun! We used to make big round snowballs, and build them one on top the other to make a wall like a flintstone house, then even rooms inside, and could swear it kept us warm, LOL.
Did we ever think the top/roof could cave in on us? Never! We were just having a ball! Thanks for the memory. lv u fes

ALSO, THAT XMAS, I RECEIVED A WATCH ON A LONG GOLDTONE CHAIN. IT HAD FAKE DIAMONDS AROUND THE FACE OF IT. I THOUGHT WHO I WAS WHEN I WORE THAT . LOL TRY GIVNG THAT TO ONE OF OUR KIDS TODAY. LOL

  • * What did you do to keep the kids busy without spending a fortune.

    FESTINA

Well you know we have the artist in us & that means creativity.
For me my favorite toy was a wooden box (just like a suitcase) filled with art supplies. It seemed like the art supplies never ran out which meant lots of use for the money.
Mostly just being outdoors was all you needed also.

For my kids BIG card board boxes turned into houses with doors. windows,Saran wrap for window panes, mailslots to slip the mail in, they decorated it for Xmas in July. They created it .
The best part was my brother & his son (very tall) taking turns squeezing to get inside, the adults had fun too LOL

Ok this is messy but hours of fun, flour on the table and matchbox dumptrucks , cars, making roads. Then when I was not in the mood for the big mess with flour, I would use a can of shaving creme FOAM. Cover the table & create roads with the tiny trucks, plow the snow and the best was color some of the foam with a drop of blue food coloring and instant ocean.
Out would come the plastic whales etc... hours of play.

I have to say I sure miss watching that.
