Good, good pizza - tasty, crunchy crust and tangy sauce. They didn't put enough pepperoni on though. Still beats the crap out of Gino's on Washington, which I've always found to be overly greasy.
What's the name of the place?

No, he must be talking about Franklin Pizza, on President.

Oops, gave the wrong location. Sorry. I meant the new brick oven place on NOSTRAND and Union, not Franklin. The same place that Whatchuwant mentions in her taste test. And, as previously stated, it was good.

Ok, cool. Yea, we also had entrees a few weeks ago and it was...really fucking good. And I don't say that lightly. At all.
Okay, so, who's got their phone number? I'm not seein' it online...

Whyfi , I'm not totally sure but I think this may be the place:

    Villagio Trattoria
    850 Nostrand Ave.
    718-363-8300

I mapped it and it shows it on Nostrand Ave and Union Street.

It's brick oven pizza , but the name of the place is not "brick oven pizza"......or is it??

I thought that it was too, but I don't see it online either.
So , I googled "Brick oven pizza in Crown Heights" and found this website:
    http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/10/villagio-trattoria-brick-oven-pizzeria-crown-heights-brooklyn-nyc.html

I don't know if I'm giving you the right info , cuz I haven't been up there yet. Whatchuwant would know for sures though.

    Whatchu?? Where you at?

Yeah, this is the place that I eventually ordered from. Pizza was good, but not a world-beater - the cheese was a bit of a disappointment, as was the skimpy pepperoni coverage, as someone else had mentioned... I wonder if they have a fresh mozz option, 'cause the crust and sauce was pretty good... :?

Awesome. I'm glad you found it after all.

That's all I need. A cheesy pizza with great sauce (preferably sweet ) and a yummy crust.

Since they have two out of the three , I'm still gonna try them. Hopefully they do have fresh mozzarella.

That is awesome. And here I thought I wasn't going to learn anything useful today.

Except I'm totally going to wrack my brain for other examples now.

    Damn you.
    er, a cookie? a tortilla?
(not that I don't love the science guy approach here)

I think you're being elliptical, Pitu.

    tres helpful, dr j.

    pitu, be more concrete.

    volume of a cylinder = pi * r^2 * h

    now substitute z for r and a for h....

The Sophia Loren. Of COURSE! Also the Margerita Sicilian. Manga! Their rice balls? Wow. Now I don't have to schlep to Lil' Italy when I want one. And they're freakin' huge!

I thought it was the opposite. I liked the cheese but the sauce needs more garlic and seasonings. I thought their rigatoni with garlic and oil was pretty good.
  • rice balls? I'm there.
  • We ordered the Sophia Loren the other night, but instead of sliced tomato, we subbed tomato sauce! Freakin' awesome. HIGHLY recommended.

BTW- it did take almost an hour for it to be delivered, and when I called them the "girl" gave me attitude (I do not like this girl- she's quite surly) about how far we were. The place is on Nostrand. We are at Franklin. 3 whole blocks. Are you kidding me?!?!
  • Whatchuwant- call ahead 4 pickup and walk the two blocks next time, eh? I know—delivery is sweet, no legwork on your part....
  • Fjord wrote: Whatchuwant- call ahead 4 pickup and walk the two blocks next time, eh? I know—delivery is sweet, no legwork on your part....
Uh, excuse me but that was the first time I ever called for delivery from them. Up until then I have ALWAYS picked up there and one time we dined in. If they say they deliver, and they know their delivery area, then what the fuck's wrong with using that option whenever I want?!?!

And it's not two- its 3 1/2 long blocks.
  • I feel ya on that , Whatchuwant. I wouldn't want to walk 3-4 blocks carrying a huge pizza box. I'll only go up there personally if I plan on eating in with friends or just getting a slice or something else that fits in a small take out box. Delivery is easy all they do is get in the car and drive.
  • nothing is wrong with it, i just suggested pickup as an option.
  • whatuwant be lazy.... what's with the "girl" comment anyway? is it because she's transgendered and that disgusts you? or because she's black?
  • rainbowpromises wrote: whatuwant be lazy.... what's with the "girl" comment anyway? is it because she's transgendered and that disgusts you? or because she's black?
hehe. this is a big funny, even as a defense of a friend (good friend of mine, personally).
  • you motherfuckers are funny!! Miss you Watchu!!
  • Forget the bullshit.

I had some Pino's pizza and it was bad. Not enough cheese and the sauce was crappy. I make better pizza than that. What a waste.
  • rainbowpromises wrote: whatuwant be lazy.... what's with the "girl" comment anyway? is it because she's transgendered and that disgusts you? or because she's black?
    1.) Who is this troll?!?!
2.) She's not black or transgendered. She's just an asshole.
  • Williamsburgh and Greenpoint would be two other areas where the average slice is consistently above-average.
Definitely something I miss from Williamsburg. Pizza joints on every corner, most above-average and some REALLY good.

Will have to try this new place on Nostrand, if it delivers all the way to me. I will admit, like Em26, I turn to a national chain for late-night delivery--but it's Papa John's. I hate Domino's and always felt PJ was decent for a chain, especially the thin crust. Online ordering--none of that pesky talking to people--and delivers until 1am on weekends, something I cherished when stumbling home drunk & starving after midnight this Friday.

Em26, did you have Donato's in Michigan? It was definitely in Ohio and Indiana, but my friends who went to school in Illinois don't remember it, so maybe it didn't reach the whole midwest. Awesome for a particular type of Ohio pizza--a crust best described as crackery but different than other cracker crusts, provolone and a square cut. Slurp.
  • Donato's.... :-k ....Nope.

We had Cottage Inn Pizza over there. It's really good as well.
I love their deep dish pizza cuz they put sesame seeds in the sauce.

Papa Johns is good too. I didn't know they had some here. They deliver till 1am .....good to know , thanks. :)
  • I hadn't eaten from a national pizza chain in YEARS until I moved to PH! Before the official move-in I was in my empty apartment painting and ordered my very first Antonio's pizza to break myself into the nabe...and was thoroughly underwhelmed. If I'd had a car I would have gotten one from Williamsburg. Well, actually if I had a car I might as well have gone to DiFara's.
  • Old Time Brooklyn wrote: My problem with Antonio's is that it seems that everyone who works there has a pizza face and hence the place seems a bit gross to me. Just seems like an oily environment.

I like Gino's on Flatbush. Joe's. Amorina. And Pizzatown on 5th. None are perfect though.

    BPFactory suxors.
Gino's gives you big portions, but little flavor. Puffy dough and heavy bland cheese. It's edible, sure.
  • alafairnadia wrote:

gino's on washington I gave one chance and my slice was so not crisp and flavorless (and I asked the guy not to put it in a bag - to let me hit it with the crushed red pepper first) and he ignored me, stuck it in the bag and sealed the bag in that weird foldy way they do in pizza joints. I kinda hate it when people ignore people who are giving them money in exchange for goods - especially if they don't work for a gigantor corporate entity with a reputation for sucking in the employee department.

oh, and that joint on vandy - the one across the st from amorina (but not albano's other restaurant) - is average and overpriced. don't bother. I love white slices (with either jalapenos and/or fresh tomatoes) - I asked the guy to put a "few" jalapenos on my slice, chopped into edible bits. he, instead, put a ton of halved slices on the slice, even after I protested again (yes, I'm demanding - but that slice was like $4!). so I took a few bites right away and ended up scraping off the jalapenos into the trash. I didn't want a vehicle for jalapenos - I wanted a vehicle for cheese slightly infused with jalapenos and garlic.
The jalapenos and red pepper incidents are disturbing...seriously. If you're paying for it, it should be how you like it.
  • I vote Amorina for more gourmet and unfortunately Antonio's for a slice. If I am further down into Park Slope Joe's on 5th (not 7th) is a good option. We have a lack of good slice joints and a decent amount of good small pie joints (Amorina, Frannys, La Villa).
  • i got papa johns delivered the other day because they had some deal that was 11 bucks for a large with unlimited toppings.

needless to say I was staying in the doorway of my building paying the guy and I was just waiting for someone to yell out "FUCKIN ASSHOLE".

they didnt, but i felt like one.

    shitty pizza tho.
  • Santa....just say no. I don't care how many cardboard cards they put in your door with coupons.

I was reading this thread, not realizing how old old old it was, and thinking I'd been around too long because Dr J was repeating his math jokes.

    :-'
  • I just had a couple of slices from Not Ray's on Fulton and S. Portland today, just because the smell coming out from the subway every day when I come home from work is just too much. Good slice.....too thick and spongy a crust, though.

Best pizza by the slice was at Oscar's on 7th, where Chilies and Chocolate is now. Since they closed, I can't really say that I prefer a slice from any place over any other, except for a sicilian slice from L&B Spumoni Gardens, which is just in another category.
  • I enjoyed Oscars too. Though they stopped delivering to my old apartment (at the Jewish hospital) because one of their delivery guys was attacked around there. Shame they went out of business, in any case.
  • I miss Oscars. Chiles and Chocolates looks fine, but I haven't made it in yet
  • Chiles and Chocolate has delicious enchiladas. Bright ingredients, fresh flavors and well done. The other dishes, IMO, are not too good. We only go here for an enchilada craving now.
