Four mice harvested last night! — Brooklynian

Four mice harvested last night!

Yo, I have become death, shatterer of worlds! Stupid cats!

peanut butter taco. Small piece of Mission soft taco rolled up with a smear of PB inside. No free lunch here.
All appear to be bucks.

  • You need mouser cats. Not just any cat will do!
  • I started the season on one mouse per night per trap. But now we're left with a smart one that's settled in for the duration, and no further action on the traps. There are now six traps out in different locations the mouse frequents (two old-fashioned snappers, two plastic safety snappers, two glue-traps). Tried a variety of delicacies -- cheese (cheddar), peanut butter (organic), salami (herbed but not too spicy), baby food (both chicken and vege), as well as purpose-formulated mouse-attractant.

Short of getting a mouser cat, any tips for dealing with SmartyMouse?

We had one of those and we tried every bait we could. A co-worker told my husband to try a piece of Kentucky Fried Chicken and the first night we used it we caught the sucker. Not sure if we were just lucky or we had a mouse that liked chicken better than peanut butter.
  • You need Stella Maria, the Mousey Hunter. She'll get that sucker (she's on the left in this pic). She'll also find it and bring it to you as a present....when you are sleeping...She will jump on your belly, make a bunch of noise and drop it on you, semi-alive...just to show her love

Get him a girlfriend and maybe they will settle on a tropical island?
  • Mouse zapper with either PB or tomato stuff (bloody mary mix worked well for me) on the inside of the vent area. I've probably suggested this elsewhere, but it's worth repeating.

I got one at Pintchik and have seen them at numerous hardware stores around Brooklyn. Worked great for us. One night, I set it in the kitchen and went to brush my teeth. Went back to the kitchen after brushing and my return scared a mouse away from the entrance to the trap where another had just been zapped. Dumped the body, reset for the night, and had another in the morning. I got one almost as soon as resetting it every time.

My pb-loving dog seemed to leave it alone and it can be put all kinds of places you might not want a glue trap or snap trap, like on counters you use, in the stove, etc.
  • And here's a video that demonstrates the mouse zapper.

  • Well, not sure it's worth having to step inside a KFC in order to get some KFC... but I like the idea of adding electricity to this little skirmish. I'd add warfarin warfare too, if it weren't quite so likely to take out the baby.

Nowhere on Flatbush had the electric mouse zapper in stock today. Where to next? SmartyMouse must die. We're now sporting 10 traps.
  • What they don't mention in the mouse zapper video is that mice know their routes around your house by the trail of shit and piss they leave behind.

In order for the mouse zapper to work you need to bait the trap and let the mice get comfortable with their routine before zapping them.

If you just mop along the walls/baseboards I think you'll have a better chance of catching the mouse.

    Also - peanut butter!
  • Wow. That is a lot of work to end up with a live mouse you then have to kill to make sure he doesn't come back in.

I think it is worth it; mice are way better when they are fresh.

Would you recommend an Italian-style Carpaccio with mustard sauce and olive oil, a Japanese-style sashimi with wasabi and ginger, or Laotian/Isaan raw Larb with lemongrass, lime and chili?
  • definitely the larb. i expect mice are rather gamy and would benefit from the counterpoint of strong flavors.

    farley mowat suggests saltines.
  • We're up to 11 traps, including the electric mousechair with organic peanut butter as condiment. If we get one freshly zapped, I figure we'll be halfway to a Penang satay.
  • A few years back I, to my surprise actually was stabbing for a mouse behind an open box of matzoh ball mix and pulled back a mouse on the end of a salad fork. Was this American or Continental style? I still wonder.
  • a mouse on a salad fork? for shame. surely your dinner fork was more appropriate.
