Thank you for your commitment to order an objective review of the Atlantic Yards project. My husband, a lifelong Brooklynite, and I bought a home in this part of Brooklyn shortly before the project was announced. Our neighborhood is not blighted and is steadily growing in an organic, pedestrian-friendly, and racially integrated way. The developer Bruce Ratner, who built an ugly and unfriendly mall on the other side of Atlantic Avenue, wants to bolster his failing commercial development by building thousands of units of housing that there is no market for in this economy. The development will be at an intersection that already has terrible, dangerous traffic. Moreover, Ratner wants to do this by taking the homes owned by our neighbors through eminent domain and converting them into new real estate that is owned by him! The arena is just an excuse for the residential building and a crass attempt to exploit Brooklyn pride for his own ends. This project is wrong economically, architecturally, and even morally. Please stop the signing of contracts and the transfer of land. Thank you.

Almost as much of a disaster as the project itself. There were other offers for the site that would also lead to jobs. The current proposal isn't the only possible use of the site.

interesting decision by justice catterson in the appellate division, first dept, yesterday denying columbia university's use of eminent domain to seize property in the mahattanville nieghborhood. he noted how the "blight" finding was simply a pretext and how the underutilization rationale meant that there was no true public use requirement in the takings clause.

One of his most pressing issues is record-high unemployment rates. Who do you think is in a better position to gain his attention? A handful of scattered, politically-inactive residents or powerful, well-organized unions who have successfully framed this whole project as an opportunity to create jobs?

The answer is obvious, but I reserve your right to continue dreaming otherwise.

Oh, this thread made me think of the one about Tish James. Here's a memorable quote:

Um, Tish won by the largest margin of any candidate for City Council. That's the neighborhood Krohn has ended up living in.

That's a great argument in favor of the UNITY plan, which will bring jobs, and was designed by our well organized neighbors. Or, you could align yourself with the candidate who Krohn supported, who got whooped in the last election.

According to the Independent Budget Office, the Ratner plan will be a money loser for the City. We can't afford to subsidize Ratner any more.

Looks like all of your efforts amounted to nothing (as usual).
