Call the gov now!
This week Governor Paterson committed to ordering an impartial and thorough review of the Atlantic Yards project. We need to encourage the Governor to do what he says and to make sure the project doesn't go forward in the meantime.
CALL TODAY! CALL RIGHT NOW!
The Governor's phone number is: 518-474-8390
When I called, a real human being answered and took the message.
Or email at http://161.11.121.121/govemail
Let's keep his phone ringing - it's critical that the Governor knows how many of us care.
It's a short call; here's what you say:
Say "who you are" and "where you're from" and then say the following (or your version).
"Governor Paterson, Thank you for your commitment to order an objective review of the Atlantic Yards project. For the review to be meaningful, Governor, it is critical that you:
Stop the entire process while the review goes forward, including
The transfer of land and
The signing of all contracts.
This project goes against the interests of the State, and everything you've stood for, and everything you're trying to accomplish with the state budget.
Thanks for doing the right thing."

I hate talking on the phone so I emailed. Thanks for the link.
Thank you for your commitment to order an objective review of the Atlantic Yards project. My husband, a lifelong Brooklynite, and I bought a home in this part of Brooklyn shortly before the project was announced. Our neighborhood is not blighted and is steadily growing in an organic, pedestrian-friendly, and racially integrated way. The developer Bruce Ratner, who built an ugly and unfriendly mall on the other side of Atlantic Avenue, wants to bolster his failing commercial development by building thousands of units of housing that there is no market for in this economy. The development will be at an intersection that already has terrible, dangerous traffic. Moreover, Ratner wants to do this by taking the homes owned by our neighbors through eminent domain and converting them into new real estate that is owned by him! The arena is just an excuse for the residential building and a crass attempt to exploit Brooklyn pride for his own ends. This project is wrong economically, architecturally, and even morally. Please stop the signing of contracts and the transfer of land. Thank you. -

You wouldn't say that if you lived in Prospect Heights. -

Does anyone stop tp think about the need for employment. Maybe you should ask the thousands of unemployed construction workers what they think or the thousands more that could end up with permenant jobs when this project is done. Wake up people. The area where they want to build this project is a disaster.

Almost as much of a disaster as the project itself. There were other offers for the site that would also lead to jobs. The current proposal isn't the only possible use of the site. -

Considering the insane amount of money we will pretty much hand Ratner, I would prefer to cut a check directly to the contruction workers to do nothing. It would be a whole lot cheaper. -

are you one of the very few who go to their games?
Go Nets!, but, let it be somewhere else. -
me personally as long as something gets built better than the empty spaces we have right now. i hated how they use eminent domain though.
-
interesting decision by justice catterson in the appellate division, first dept, yesterday denying columbia university's use of eminent domain to seize property in the mahattanville nieghborhood. he noted how the "blight" finding was simply a pretext and how the underutilization rationale meant that there was no true public use requirement in the takings clause.

Give it up, guys. You lack the power to stop this and always have. But, I must say, your doomed efforts do give me much amusement!

dear one-time poster
you get no pity here
this economy has negatively impacted all sectors
many professionals have changed their line of work
due to economic circumstance
families have relocated to follow work
people are retraining to plan a future
if you are in fact an unemployed construction worker
don't sit around waiting for miracles and handouts
change what you do or find it elsewhere
the woe of the world is not yours -

When I read this ^ the following came to mind:
don't sit around waiting for miracles and handouts
change what you do or find it elsewhere
Be the change you wish to see in your pocket.
It was all Karl's doing, of course.
Some sort of 20th level elf mind trick. -

You guys crack me up! Talk about naivete. Paterson's ratings are in the toilet and, moron that he is, he believes that he can change that by the end of next year. One of his most pressing issues is record-high unemployment rates. Who do you think is in a better position to gain his attention? A handful of scattered, politically-inactive residents or powerful, well-organized unions who have successfully framed this whole project as an opportunity to create jobs?
The answer is obvious, but I reserve your right to continue dreaming otherwise. -

Oh, this thread made me think of the one about Tish James. Here's a memorable quote:
Jack Krohn wrote: Tish is nothing but a fist-raiser. She's purely symbolic and has accomplished nothing substantial, despite being in office for years. She's currently being outpaced by her opponent in fundraising, so perhaps she'll face her first real challenger in years. Either way, I won't vote for her.
Um, Tish won by the largest margin of any candidate for City Council. That's the neighborhood Krohn has ended up living in.Jack Krohn wrote: Paterson's ratings are in the toilet and, moron that he is, he believes that he can change that by the end of next year. That's a great argument in favor of the UNITY plan, which will bring jobs, and was designed by our well organized neighbors. Or, you could align yourself with the candidate who Krohn supported, who got whooped in the last election.
According to the Independent Budget Office, the Ratner plan will be a money loser for the City. We can't afford to subsidize Ratner any more. -
where went little johnny krohn?
he usually does us the favor
of bringing this topic
to the top of the board -
Looks like all of your efforts amounted to nothing (as usual).
Hahaha! Told you so!

jackie smacky gets his wings
he's always glad to help this topic out -
in the kingdom of the blind as a frail king steps down
banners proclaim triumphant glory
yet they serve to hide the deceitful destruction borne of a dark lord
dark lord had whit
and fed hungry folk crumbs from his table
and they called him new king,
giving king, sweet king, lord and king
secretly they wished for more, a heel of bread
not knowing their lives and their children's lives
were sold for only one crumb
but the dark lord still wanted more than the 54 hectors made fallow
and so a son was made, it's creation name, baldc
yet not by birth but an of arcane nature
formed from arms, legs and eyes of fallen comrades, esdc and jda
baldc was created for one purpose only
to secure eminent power for the dark lord
