    ....As a subscriber to the ancient code of the "Annoyingly Too Frequent Brooklyian Poster", I am sorry, but I can not reveal the mystery sponsor.

    But I can disclose that whoever, or whatever, sponsored that bench clearly knows his/her/its stuff.

    The inscription clearly pays homage to one of the Brooklynian threads that started it all... behold, the words of our forefathers and foresisters:

    one is a 2' cube painted light blue.

    the other is larger - 8' x 28.5" x 20.5" built out of pressure treated lumber. it features a bench on one side.

    plants are NOT included but the top soil is. we have heavy duty trash bags for soil transport.

    these MUST be picked up by SUNDAY NOVEMBER 28

    It seems these benches will soon need a new home null...the lot that the garden was using has been sold, and construction will soon begin.

    So, if you'd like 4, nearly indestructible benches PM me.

    ....If you'd like a new market rate apartment or condo in western CH, I know where some prime ones are going to be.

    730 Franklin Avenue.

    I can't imagine the plans will be too exciting. However, I am curious to know if our future neighbors are believed to be willing to support an elevator for such a small, R-6 building.

    If they are only doing four stories, with 8 apartments, I doubt they will include an elevator.

    two apartments per floor.

    ...the only apartment I would not want is the one that will be on the first floor, fronting Franklin Ave.

    This infill building should go up quickly. If they construction this summer, they should be able to "be inside" by the winter months, and the units ready for sale by this time next year.

    8 apartments, at a mean of 800 sq ft each, means about $500k each, for a total of around $ 4M.

    The new owners are wasting no time.

    They have informed CHCA that they need to get all of their belongings out of there by COB on Tuesday (May 15), because they are apparently going to start soil testing and construction on Wednesday.

    What is left of the garden will be hauled away in a big truck as they excavate for the foundation.

    Anything else that needs rescuing from the site? We have space (and use) for planters and that sort of thing.

    Sure, let me know. I'll also be happy to relinquish the benches and whatever else needs a home once CHCA finds a new space for the garden. We're literally around the corner and I have a truck so it's not too arduous a move.

    Possibility that things from this garden that need a new home could find it at Rogers/Park garden. But you'd have to check with the coordinators first

    Just read the story. So was the garden done without any consent from the owners (or possibly not even their knowledge?)

    I'd be surprised if the owner was not concerned about potential liability issues. In a way, not knowing about it (or pretending not to know about it) would perhaps have been the best way for them to approach it.

    Initially, most urban community gardens are "opened" without the consent of the landowners for just the reasons you mention.

    After a period of time (and with some skill and luck) an organization such as the Trust For Public Land might approach the landlord and offer them a combination of money and public praise in exchange for a cheap sale.

    The Trust for Public Land (TPL) then owns the sites tax free (basically forever), and lets the community members garden on it to their heart's content.

    Needless to say, for many reasons, TPL can't buy all of the sites that groups are using, and some gardens find themselves "on the move" pretty regularly. Hopefully CHCA will have the wherewithal to do this again, and be fortunate enough to choose a plot that won't be built on quickly.

    Plots that were owned by someone who died, and then left to relatives that don't live in NYC are often ideal......
