  • Hello All from Aston Gardens at the Courtyards. That is the official name of the place we moved to. It is commonly called "The Courtyards" We almost have the apartment looking liveable. Thank goodness for the storage area out in the hall. Anything you do not know what to do with goes out there. Word of advice for anyone planning a move in the future. Start getting rid of stuff you really do not need on a regular basis, NOW. The meals here are great, they cleaned our apartment on friday which includes washing your linens (bedclothes and towels etc:) and remaking your bed. Vacuuming, washing floors, cleaning bathrooms and kitchen. They do that every week. We hung a few of our pictures and will call Maintenence next week to hang the rest. We even went to a Church service here at the apartments today. It is a Non-Denominational service. Plain but quite good. We have been here for 11 days and have not turned on the stove or microwave yet! Friday night we played Bunco and it was a lot of fun. The winners at the table have to move to another table. This way you get to meet a lot of people. We also have eaten meals with a lot of people and have enjoyed their company. Most tables are set for four or more so they seat you with others most of the time. It is like being on a cruise without going out to sea.I will get back to writing about Brooklyn memories very soon. :D-Y

  • Hi, This morning we had breakfast with a lady who served in Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. during WWll. I shared some of my Brooklyn memories about WWll including the air raid drills, the sky being lit up with searchlights when a private plane screwed up by not filing a flight plan to fly over Brooklyn. The searchlights on Lookout Mountain in Prospect Park lit up the sky like it was daylight. Then I told her about seeing the Queen Mary & Elizabeth sailing our of NY Harbor full of troops going to England. She was a nurse in charge of a ward of amputees from the war. She has been chosen by a group that sends WWll veterans to D.C. to see the new WWll Memorial. She was in D.C. recently and saw Walter Reed all shut down and of course found that very sad. Memories, Memories, Memories.... :-k

  • Good Morning Patsy....

another rainy day :|.....I think we are in for a very rainy summer!!!!

I just want to ask for special prayers this morning.....Anthony Morro's wife Patty has stage 3 breast cancer and will be starting her chemo treatments today........I want to wish the whole family lots of luck in the days and months ahead of them....my thoughts and prayers are with you all.....

  • Hello All,

Prayers for Patty Morro. Carol and I have been through Cancer treatments for 4 different types of Cancer. So far so good. Hey Judy, we have been getting tons of rain down here in "Sunny" Florida. Even after the storm passed we still had it coming down in Buckets.

When I think back to my childhood in the slope, I can"t help but think that today's kids do not realize how good they have it. I can remember four or five kids trying to come up with 29 cents to buy a Spaulding pink ball to play stickball. Our bats were broomhandles and they were not signed by anyone. When we could not come up with the 29 cents, we rang doorbells and collected enough deposit bottles to take to the candy store to get enough money. Most bottles had a 2 Cent refund. Now you may ask "where did the balls go that you had to keep replacing them"? Some got hit over the roofs, some split in the middle, some got run over and some just mysteriously dissappeared We had to hide the bats (broom handles) because if the Cops got a complaint they had to confiscate them. I think they took them home to their own kids. When we could not get enough kids or equipment to play stickball, we played Box Ball. Triangle or off the point by the apartment house. Now the kids want to go to Disney where the price for one day admission just went up to $95.00. Got three kids? Do the math... #-o

  • Happy Flag Day and & all!

  • Hi Everyone.damp & rainy today..waiting for Jessica to come & pick me up to go to the mall..been busy at work all week...Happy Father's Day tomorrow and to all the Dads in heaven.......bye

  • Happy Fathers Day to all you Fathers out there! I wish I had my Father to wish a Happy Fathers Day to. He died in Methodist Hospital in the slope on April 20 1955. He was 54 years old. Hardly had a chance to enjoy the fruits of his labor. I still have my memories. Walking to Prospect Park together and feeding the squirrels. The boardwalk in Coney Island, going with my Mother late at night on the Smith/9thst Trolley to bring my Father a hot meal when he was working a double shift at B'klyn Union Gas Co's Citizens Works plant right on the Ggowanus Canal. I am sure that some of you remember the big gas storage tank adjacent to the Canal just off Smith Street. Back in those days, they manufactured the gas from Coke. No, not the kind you drink, the kind you burned like coal. My Father was given the privelege of turning on the first Natural Gas Valve in Brooklyn when it took the place of the Manufactured Gas. When he died he was a shift foreman in the Greenpoint Gas works. He was in Line for promotion to Plant Manager but he died before the promotion took place. My Father enjoyed playing the "Poker" machines in Coney Island. He would win cartons of cigarettes. He was very good at rolling the balls into the card names spots on the board. He also enjoyed going fishing with some friends once or twice a year on a boat out of Sheepshead Bay. For many years he worked rotating shift work. 8-4, 4-12, 12-8.

When he worked nights we had to try and be quiet during the day so he could sleep. While he and I did not get a lot of time to spend together, I loved him dearly and cherish the times we DID have together... =DB
