Indian Restaurant on Franklin — Brooklynian

Indian Restaurant on Franklin

Anyone know about the Indian restaurant coming to Franklin Ave btwn Prospect and St. Marks? I was walking by yesterday and saw a sign in the window saying an Indian place was coming soon. Someone mentioned this in another thread a few weeks back but no details, anyone know anything more?

  • i don't know anything, but i'd be very happy to see it open! i got a menu in my door for another indian place (name now forgotten) but it was too overpriced for me, so if this is cheaper, and around the block, i'm all for it! :D/
  • Any more word about this place? Anyone notice any progress?
  • I walked by today and the windows are still papered over. The work permits have a start date of April 15th so who knows how long it will be before they open. I hope they open soon, I'm jonesing for some good Indian food. I ordered from the place on Vanderbilt once and it was bland. How could it be bland?
  • Really? I liked that place- they have this coconut, shrimp type dish. We love that place in our house...
  • India Place? I think that's what it's called. I ordered mixed vegetable curry and samosas. I'm not a huge fan of really spicy food since I'm a wuss but I like a little bit of spice. Maybe I'll give them another shot sometime.
  • does anybody know what's going on with a place on Franklin bet St John's and Licoln, next to the failed furniture store? They seem to have renovated the place, nice doors outside, looks like a restaurant might be going in there...
  • I don't know what's going on with that space in particular but I've noticed a lot of storefronts have been renovated in anticipation of new businesses. It seems like the owners are being proactive to create nice spaces before they have a tenant rather than just leaving this work to the tenant as is often done.

I think this bodes well for Franklin Ave as once it starts a large number of businesses will open in a short period of time. It really helps to have these "move in ready" spaces.
  • somebody told me today that they are going to open a lounge...could that be true? Franklin is starting to rock!
  • If Joy on Flatbush at Prospect delivers to you they are much better than India House.
  • It looks like things are moving along with the Indian place, they now have an awning up. It's called Bombay Masala. Google reveals that there is a Bombay Masala on 49th st in Manhattan, don't know if there's a connection.
  • Subject: BID

Anyone know anything about getting an area designated as a business improvement district (BID)? Maybe that can be the next step for the development of Franklin (and Nostrand). I know there is a BID in the works for a stretch of Fulton St between Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy. Anyone know anything about the process? Any folks from CHNA?

There maybe someone from the Crow Hill Community Association that can help with this process: http://www.crowhillcommunity.org/

From what I understand it usually takes a few years to get these going. It requires the city to force property owners to pay money each month for cleaning and street improvements which can be difficult as many owners don't want to pay.

Often these start informally with a few merchants who start to put things together on their own and try to get more on board. Once there is a critical mass it is easier to get the city involved to make it official.
  • how do any indian restaurants stay open? they're always empty, save one or twp mournful-looking hindus standing beside rows and rows of small, barren tables with white tableclothes.
  • "mournful-looking hindus"? what is this, 1915?

anyway, indian restaurants are more often owned by muslims.
  • Was in Bombay Masala this weekend with my family, the owners said it was almost ready. They guessed it would open 1st or 2nd week in July. They were a bit tentative as they were waiting for city inspection.

We took a take-out menu and looks delish with a fairly large offering of dishes. Just a touch on the pricey side though... dishes in the 8-12$ range.
  • Oh, also they deliver! They told us they would go past Nostrand so we are happy!

A lot of restaurants that don't do much table service do very well with delivery. Indian's one type of food I order delivery for all the time and rarely go into a restaurant to eat.
  • I'm excited to try this out. Will this be the only good Indian restaurant in the area? TBD.

...and mostly they're not even indian muslims but bangladeshis
  • i feel cheated. i was only indulging in their tandoori chicken because i feared the wrath of shiva, destroyer of universes.
  • Just to chime in, got the menu, its basically Joy 2.

Same menu, font, design, and quote from Marty Markowitz, calling it one of his favorite Brooklyn restaurants.

Sadly, the pricing is just the same! Joy ain't cheap...you'd think they'd knock it down a buck or two.

first we need to get the merchants on franklin to actively participate in Crow Hill Community Association (as in pay dues), there are only a few that do.
this is something that is slated to be addressed this summer, anyone interested in helping out, please pm me.
and yes, to continue the revitalization of franklin is extremely important
  • Just ordered delish food from there tonight! And yes, they do deliver past Nostrand! :D

YAY! Indian delivery in the winter is going to be lovely! Not many places will deliver past Nostrand! :D
  • We went on opening night (monday) and had a lovely dinner. Both the Chicken Dansak and the Chicken Tikka Masala tasted delish - though some of the meat we a tad over done (First night jitters?). The service was excellent. We also ordered Vege Pakora and asked if they could make it mostly onion. They gave us all onion, which is our fav so we were very happy. Everything came very quickly after we ordered. No Liquor license yet, so BYOB is another plus. Very satisfactory!
  • just ordered some chicken tandoori from them tonight. delivery took 40 minutes (!) but the food was great. it's a little expensive for me to order very often, but i'm glad to see another food option in the neighborhood. i would definitely order from them again, although next time i think i'll drag my lazy ass outside to pick it up.
  • ok, so I'm going to try this place this weekend. Let's see if it meets my high Indian food standards. :-)
  • A friend and I carried out from there last night. (Would have stayed but had to get home for a conference call.) We had chicken tikki masala, saag ponir, veg somosa and naan, and it was all great. I'll definitely go back. But yeah, sad that it's not a little cheaper.
  • the food there was great!
  • had dinner there last weekend
we only had one entree between us
    (it was late)
so this is a limited review
but the samosas & banana pakora were excellent
and the saag ponir was seasoned very delicately
    this is my benchmark dish
so i am definitely going back
