I disagree. you're a fool if you walk around at night anywhere in the city with your head in the clouds. -

I wouldn't characterize Prospect Heights as a crime zone. everywhere I've ever lived, from college dorms to fancy pants neighborhoods in Houston (Tanglewood, River Oaks) has had varying degrees of violent crime. I'm not anywhere nearly as afraid of 3 teenage punks in my neighborhood than a home invasion robber following me home from the supermarket and cornering me my garage with a shotgun (that was a popular crime when I lived in Houston). -
Hamilton—do you live in PH? A *crime zone* it ain't.
But as alafairnadia pointed out, violent crime can happen anywhere, from Mayberry suburbia to here, in Brooklyn. My mantra is: "Try as hard as you can every day to not make yourself a target." And still, this may not be good enough. -
What you are unaware of, is that those Police Officers are part of the Paid Detail Unit. They work at locations such as Target, Yankee Stadium and other locations throughout the City. They are Paid directly by the Company that hires them. As for the Brooklyn Public Library, the people that you see in those Blue Police-Like uniforms are Special Patrol Officers and have Peace Officer status. They are not Police Officers and will call the Police when they have a problem. As for Parades and street fairs, theres always a beefed up Police presence at these locations due to the large turn out of people at these events.

Thanks for the clarification KWAC... never knew that. Makes sense too.

Subject: CRIME
I've been a Brooklynite all my life and live in Windsor Terrace where crime is almost non-existent,due to a strong community involvement with the 72nd PCT.
For years the thought of renting or buying property in either Prospect or Crown Heights was considered a risk not worth taking and after reading some of the postings about a series of muggings and near muggings that perception appears justified.
To get a handle on this problem the neighborhood will have to demand better policing and this should be done at a community meeting with the Police Capt.
Try it,it's the only way
Good luck -

You are right I was unaware about the Paid Detail Unit, which brings me to the question Why have this unit even if they are paid for by the Corporations?
Isn't it beneficial to the communities to have officers in the street rather then being rented to companys.
I didn't realize the Police Dept was running a temp agency -

I'm sorry, but nothing you say in your post has me convinced that you were about to be robbed. Did they say anything to you? Maybe they were playing some sort of game with the person walking at you and you got in the middle. Let me guess: You're white. What a surprise.
I ran out into the middle of the street, kept walking toward Vanderbilt, grabbed my cell phone and started dialing (my husband, not 911, duh!). After a moments hesitation, they finally spotted a few people walking toward us, pulled their jackets over their heads and all four ran toward Vanderbilt.
I have lived in this neighborhood for 6 years and nothing like this has ever happend. I still can't believe that this occurred at 7 PM. Scary... There are about 5 houses in a row on that corner that did not have their house lights turned on, making that corner very dark. PLEASE turn on your house lights at night. Crime always increases during the holidays. Also, nearly all homeowners on Prospect Place between Underhill and Washington recently received tickets, $65, for not having them on, it is the law.
They were all young, maybe 16-19, skinny and wearing heavy black jackets. One had a black and white pin stripped jacket and was light skinned, short hair. One had his really shinny black jacket pulled over his face and I didn’t get a good look at the other two.
I mean what else would a group of black kids on Prospect Place between Underhill and Vanderbilt at 7PM be doing other than trying to rob a white person.
Tell the truth. You were frightened because they were black and if the had been a bunch of white kids you would have thought nothing of it. -

Reading this once again, it makes no sense. You were walking towards Vandy and they were following you. Once they saw people they ran past your position (since you were in the middle of the street) to Vandy past the people that they saw coming towards you. If they were trying to rob you wouldn't they have run in the opposite direction towards Underhill?

I'm calling you out on this one. You're either a racist or a liar. Which is it? -

what cwh812 was implying you would probably find it acceptable to be mugged by white people
but not acceptable by a black person.
He sounds like a student of Isiah Thomas -

I'm not sure who "Ishiah Thomas" is. Does he coach the Brooklyn Nets?
but not acceptable by a black person.

And no I was not implying that it was acceptable to be mugged by white people, but rather she was not about to be mugged at all. Also, don't be silly, everyone knows white people don't mug people. -
Just gotta say something here - Regardless of race, if I saw three teenage guys run after me on a dark street I'd be kinda concerned. Would it be wiser to just continue walking at a normal pace and act like nothing's happening?? I mean c'mon, I don't think this is a racial issue. I would hope not.

I know white men can't jump but i didn't know white people don't mug.[the next Spike Lee movie]
I don't think Ishiah Thomas is sure of who he is.(':P') -
I believe that, yes, vagabond was being targeted. And i think that she's neither a racist OR a liar.
but cwh812 may have a point: To read the post again, it seems that the muggers would had to run past vagabond, because *all* of you were walking towards Vanderbilt, closer to Underhill. But she was in the street, so this could've been easy. -
I don't blame vagabond for running...A bunch of guys (white/black/asian/hispanic -doesn't matter) vs. one woman...I think it'd be ridiculous not to run. It's ashame that this has become a racial issue and has offended cwh812. It isn't. It's self preservation. I'm sure this has nothing to do with race.

I completely agree with Nyla, when is one lone woman (or man for that matter) being bum rushed by a group of teenage boys (be they black white blue or green) NOT a cause for alarm? Any sane person would have been on their gaurd and wary..calling the OP a racist and a lair seems rude and inflamatory at best.
And for one I think the teens running for Vandy would make sense, there are more people there and they could blend into the crowd easier. -
I've lived on St. Mark's for 8 years and it's amaziing to me how much more street crime is happening here in the last year or so. our car was broken into on our block a few months back and I personally witnessed an attempted mugging on Vanderbilt not too long ago. In that instance the victim fought back and screamed at the 2 young black teenagers who tried to rob him of his ipod. Also, the 2 thieves ran towards me and others that were walking towards the incident and were laughing and didn't even care who saw them, so cwh812 your "evidence" that vagabond was being bias is incorrect.

It's not either or. NYPD uniformed officers are allowed to "moonlight" for selected employers. This is in *addition* to their regular hours and assignments - not in lieu of them. The cop who you see at Target is in place of a security "rent-a-cop", but does not impact a cop's regular assignment. The only extent to which the NYPD is running a temp agency, is that they help facilitate this employment. Personally, I like this policy. It helps cops who want to make extra money find employment. If by doing so, it helps keep cops from leaving the NYPD for higher paying jobs in other counties, it benefits the citizens of the city. -

With the authorization of the NYPD to work another job while on the force is fine, it helps them support their familys and it's better then working as a bartender where there is a possible danger.
Now here comes the question, while working in their uniforms at these part time jobs does the city have any legal responsibility for an employee working off their regular job while in uniform -
I have been 3 times in my life, trust me when I say that the number was about to rise to 4. Three guys running to catchup to me on a dark street while I am walking alone, separate guy keeping pace across the street, guy covers his face!!! come on, they could have been blue and I would have called this a mugging attempt. And I didn't turn around, see that the guys speed walking toward me were black and run into the street. I turned back around, thought maybe it was nothing until a sec later I heard them running toward me. I turned, SAW them running toward me and then ran into the middle of the street. When I ran into the street, there was a couple and one other person walking right in front of the Anglique Deli on PPlace, about to cross Underhill and also someone walking toward me on Vanderbilt. Either direction, they were going to pass someone.
I saw those kids today getting out of school. They were walking together with a girl. I have a distinctive jacket and bright green purse. They saw me too...and recognized me. I am uncomfortable about that. I was walking out of La Gamin and they were on Bergen just past Vanderbilt. -
OMG! i can't believe you had the presence of mind to look at their faces and capture such a level of detail. i can't believe you actually saw them again! and that they recognized you too!
my 30 something boyfriend nearly had his skateboard jacked by a team of little menaces who were out breaking windows in our hood. Now mind you they first asked his permission to begin breaking those windows, he decided not to stick around when the "leader" started making a move for his board. he was clearly disturbed by the whole thing because they were so young, vicious, and he also didn't want to have to use his board as a weapon in self defense against people who were really just kids.
there's a reason why lord of the flies was written and was a popular movie twice over, teenaged boys ARE inherently evil!

Maybe I missed it if you said something, but did you ever answer the question about whether you reported this to the police?
Could be for the best that they recognized you and (it sounds like) realized you recognized them as well. Maybe they'll be more likely to leave you the hell alone knowing you could pick them out of a lineup. Hope so, anyway. -

When I got to Park Slope, I called and got the main HQ. They in turn gave me the phone # for the 76th instead of the 77th. The 76th took my info and the description of the guys and said they would pass it on. I should call and make sure that is what happened.
FYI, if someone else is attacked, I could definitely pick the main guy out of a lineup. I recognized him today without the stripped jacket. The other guys had on the same jackets so that was easy. -
I take issue with Vagabond's use of "four young black guys" which I must admit got me heated a few hours ago. Why not just four young guys.
Vagabond, why do you have to start the story with the fact that they are black? Couldn't you have waited to say they were black until where you were describing the rest of what they were wearing (which is an even better indentification tool).
Do you always interject someone's race when describing people? i.e. I was hanging out with my white friend on Friday. I tried to call my Asian husband. Sorry, if your husband's not asian. I didn't think so. -

its america. race is one of those outstanding things that we can tell different people apart faster than. say white people vs other white people than you have to work with more details.

the point of the post was to warn people - she posted not only that they were young and black but also descriptions of their clothing. she recognized these kids beyond skin color. but, obviously, we can't see into her head to find out what those kids' faces look like. so what we get is four black kids wearing thus and such clothing - could try to mug you.

there have been posts in the past where race has definitely been used as an ... inappropriate/unprovable descriptor, arguably racist in nature. there's a clear reason for users to react poorly to those posts. but this is just a description - more descriptive than usual for these types of posts - of 4 kids that are running around potentially wreaking havoc. -

If you were intimidated by four white guys and the police arrived ,you would tell them they all were wearing Dockers, quite nice in fact, stunning J.Crew sweaters and Club shirts sold at at Macy's and by the way they are currently on sale..Oh by the way I almost forgot they are white, but they were dressed impeccably and my husband is not Asian.
I doubt it
Chill out the woman was and is still scared -
I guess we should just do the same thing as the local news broadcasts. When they describe a suspect in a crime that is black they dont mention race at all but when its any other race except black then its okay to use race as a way of describing them.
So for example you were about to be mugged by 4 male black teenagers on your way home. The politically correct way to describe this incident would be to say " i was about to be mugged by 4 teenage boys "
If they were any other race besides black say asian for example it is permissible to use race in your description, example " i was about to be mugged by 4 teenage asian boys.
with this formula you can now accurately describe you assailants to others in the community and not be branded a racist.
Howdy, Stranger!
