  • The spouse and I went last night. Beautiful renovation, nice cocktails, and cool retro vibe. the service was lacking, though, very slow and inattentive staff, despite the place not being that crowded initially. they need to work on their beer selection, too, though I suppose that doesn't really matter, as the cocktails are the main attraction.

despite these gripes, i'm still glad to welcome 'em to the neighborhood. It's nice to see Vanderbilt grow.
  • Subject: Beers!!!

As shitty as Soda is they have a wide variety of beer...Loads of seasonal brews... Also a new high end beers bar opened in the Slope , not sure what is called , i think its on 7th ave and 14th..The Gate on 3rd street and 5th also has 24 beers on tap...
  • Tis almost looks like a bad review...

Remember some of the Bartenders from M&H are the most boring and unfriendly ones out there. Sasha only hires people who never Bar tended in their life, he does it so that he can mold them to his specification, some times it works most it does not. They aren ot service oriented people, as much as they would like to think they are mixologist they are only what sasha wants them to be. If you want to be at a Bar with Bar tenders who actually know the spirits and are service oriented, try having a drink at Tailor when Alex is there, or at Freeman's when Linette or Yana are there, or the Back room, or even Pegu club.

    Here is the Gothamist review

Weather Up: Speaking of snobbery, a few bartenders trained at the Lower East Side’s Milk & Honey, the exclusive, reservations-only, old-timey lounge whose phone number we used to know, have brought their fastidiousness to Prospect Heights. Owned by Kathryn Weatherup, a partner in the East Side Company bar (a poor man’s Milk & Honey), the Brooklyn venture is a continuation of what’s proving to be a very successful business model: cultivate a sophisticated, sexy vibe with tasteful lighting, a mahogany bar, and music conducive to conversation, and people will pay through the nose for your fancy cocktails. There are eleven on the menu at Weather Up, including the East Side Company “Presbyterian”, an eye-opening intermingling of ginger beer and rye whiskey. 589 Vanderbilt Avenue, near Dean, Brooklyn.

I see nothing wrong with this
  • Tried to go to Weather Up on Fri nite around 9:30...no tables or bar stools to be had for a party of four, so we left. Gorgeous (but dark as hell) inside. Could've sat at the long benches along the wall adjacent to the bar but they seemed to be the coat check for the nite. Oh yes...they had a doorman stationed there as well (?) Instead, we went over to Barette and the dancers made us all happy that we did.

My gf and I tried again on Sat night after the National show at BAM—I peeked in the window at Weather Up around 10:30 and it was packed to the gills, man. No way.
  • all this press is killing the awesome.

i reckon but how often will people come to our 'hood for a bar? Maybe dinner and post-dinner drinks, but really how many restaurants in PH get folks from PS, Clinton Hill, Ft. Greene, Crown Heights, etc? Or do you think that the bar(s) bring more people in than the restaurants?
  • maybe the hype will die down a bit?

i went in there last thursday fairly happy, but left pissed.

as the night went on, the music went up. i was there for 2 drinks, and over the course of an hour and half, i left upset i'd dropped so much money in a place that i thought would promise a quieter, more sophisticated environment.

towards he end of the night, had some drunk broad all up in my ear yelling "WHAT'S IN A DAAAARK AND STOOOORMY... WHAT ISSSSS IT??.... IS THIS THE SAAAAAME OWWWNERS AS MILK AND HONEY AND WHATS THE OTHER PLACE...? LITTLE BRANCH????" she said this like 5 times before i turned around and gave her a look. if looks could kill, she'd be dead. i did not go in there expecting to have to raise my eyebrow at anyone.

between my friend and i, 44 bux later, i would have been much happier going to soda/barrette as usual.

the thing that this place must establish is shooting their patrons the same dirty looks that i did if they want this place to remain on the quiet side. they need to keep the music low and demand people use their inside voices the moment the enter. they better, considering the place is tile. it got loud as fuck.

i'll return, but only after the douchebags have gotten their fix of passing through the hood. i don't plan on dropping any more money in there until a weekday happy hour time in the spring. i do not suggest going on a thursday/friday until the word stops spreading.

Welcome to the world of high end cocktail lounges where pretentiousness rules and your batched drinks for the weekend losers will set you back on your rent. But then again our neighborhood has become affluent so therefore most of you have the moolah to be treated like you deserve it. I suppose that most of you know that our hood is changing, there are at least 4 new places opening up from Dean up to Park Place on saturated short span on the Avenue, as much as you want to believe that most of these place are counting on the regular folk that live here in PH, one cannot be more wrong. As you know most of the people native to this hood for the last 40 years are already priced out many by folk like you who post here. The funny thing is that most of these new businesses opening up are actually already thinking in the long term, they are already thinking not of you but the next set of people that will and is pricing you out, they are betting their future on the Stadium opening up, that is when the goose will lay the golden egg, as for now enjoy the relative quiet soon enough it won't be there and so won't you...
  • @sneakyonstmarks: what's your view of garden cafe, given your price point analysis re: new development on vandy? especially as that price point relates to quality.

To answer this part of your post - I do not make lots of moolah but when I do have some extra I would rather go to somewhere that can make me something I cannot make at home, somewhere that is more mature so my husband and I can feel comfortable instead of like grams and gramps.

My whole side of the block on Underhill is my family. They have lived there for over 40 years and own their own home. Most of the oldtime homeowners I know are very happy to see some retail/bar diversity and love finally come this way. Just because the majority of faces at these bars/restaurants are young does not mean they are newcomers.

Well that is something we will have to see but many of the shops on Vanderbilt are so personable with regulars (Red Lipstick, Bike Station, Beast, Mitchells, etc) that I cannot see that changing and if this stadium and development actually get built I do hope that those places do benefit because they have keep their stores here before there was even talk of the Nets coming here.
  • Subject: HMM

Well versed Stacey, yeah try getting your bike fixed , they open whenever they want, will take a month to get your bike fixed, beast slow service , red slipostick, not a girl so i could not tell. As for the young faces, yes most of them are new comers, you know that. But hey, good luck to all the new places opening up, i guess we need a western style saloon, we need a new pizzeria, we need a new sports bar, we need a new Spa, wow, i guess i am going to be have be going out every night, and apparently most of the people in Prospect heights now won´t have to cook at home, now they won´t have to go the movies, now they can just walk up and down Vanderbilt get stuff with overtly price food and get really drunk on high end cocktails made by bartenders who don´t even live in the hood! I love Mitchell´s but i bet most people never been there and is probably still open due to either rent control or they own the building. Plus old timers who own buildings are now hiking up the prices how come we have almost no minority own bussçinesses you tell me?

    As for the Garden Cafe
I love the place, want to have a quiet dinner go there, same thing with Sorrel too bad it did not work out apparently you guys don´t have cash and there was no credit card machine , huge factor around here...Garden Cafe was at the forefront of this neighborhood, when i moved here a as kid there were just opening up and its good to see that they are still around. Remember that was the only place around , other than castillo de Jagua , hot Bird and the Thai place where sugar is, plus geido, so there you all for the agrden cafe,...

    This isn't necessarily all bad/evil.

The new places opening are small businesses run by entrepreneurs who are trying to make a living/life for themselves in a very competitive city. These aren't large corporations - just folks like us.

Each is taking a calculated risk, one that I would take if I had the means given the current outlook of the area. Think about it: a thriving neighborhood with more and more young people moving in every week (face it...they spend money), and the people that live here (whether they are "natives" or new), tend to be loyal to local business.

Of course, any loan agency/investor helping these people out is going to want to see a business plan, which would OF COURSE have data/analysis of the potential exponential growth for this neighborhood. That alone is going to make or break the loan/investment. Very few businesses succeed by opening and remaining stagnant. Growth is required...even if it is only enough to cover rising overhead costs.

As mentioned, luckily this neighborhood has thus far been spared from any major chains moving in.

Another point: what "you" want isn't necessarily what the business is trying to do...or what is good for them in the long run. Most of these places open up with a specific plan and a customer in mind...one that actually WANTS what they have to offer. Sure, if the business starts failing, then they made a mistake thinking that their customer was out there. However, Weatherup (for example) doesn't seem to be having any issues just yet. So, why would they deviate from their plan just because "you" envisioned something else?

It's funny, because on EVERY food/bar/etc. message board, people always start chiming in about what a place SHOULD be. If these places listened to and acted every customer suggestion, we'd have thousands of the same place. If you don't like a place for what it is...don't go. If there are enough people like you, the establishment will eventually get the message.
  • Subject: hmm

Hey every business has the right to do what ever they want, if they want to target a specific customer that is fine, nothing wrong with that. That is why people write down business plans, what i am mostly refering to is : people here want to have a quiet place to go to but what i am trying to say is that as much as they want that , what is the point of having a business that only attracts customers that will take your tables, your bar, bring an enclycopedia and have 2 drinks max, how is business going to survive that? Like i said before what prospect heights new business(not only Weathered) counting on is what this neighborhood will turn out to be, meaning 15,000 people at a sold out gameat the new Stadium will want to eat and drink, shop or whatever and these 15 thousand people is what will make these businesses succeed not the blogger gal or guy who wants to have a drink and read the entire collection of Spinoza´s writings on a coktail.
And when you say that they are not corporations you better think about that, most of the places that are going up are owned by people that have more than a couple of places, always branching out not under the same name.. Just look around.
  • After a second visit around closing time last Friday, I feel they need to enforce some rules re: noise like Little Branch and Milk & Honey (along the same lines as ProspectPlaceGirl's argument). There were some rambunctious dudes in there who simply would not quiet down, sit down, or leave when they were supposed to.

That might be a little judgmental though, since it was 3 am.
  • Subject: Quiet!!

But then again they need those loud people, remember they need to pay bills and if it wasn´t for those loud mouths the place would be empty..I guess their concept has been a bit flawed. M&H was mostly for couples and reservations only, i don´t think Weatherd can afford that, they need the young wanna be sophisticated people , who are only going there because they think drinking a 11 dollar cocktail that they have never heard of is cool and sophisticated.

just found this on the net

All I know, is that if I am paying 11 dollars for a cocktail, it better be cool, sophisticated, and quiet. Dammit.

Coincidence perhaps Alafarnadia, as you can tell his style of writing is sophisticated and mine barbaric, terrible puntuation and grammar, spelling not much better. And as a matter of fact a friend sent me the link never heard of mouthful

    About weathered up on Mouthful

Given such a mob scene, it ought to be impossible for them to turn out quality cocktails. But, having seen Weather Up consultant Sasha Petraske holding court near us, the very persuasive Jesikka somehow persuaded him to mix our drinks. It's probably not telling you much to say that Sasha Petraske can make an excellent Champs Elysee, but there it is. To be sure, this tells us nothing of the performance of their more plebian staff bartenders (I recognized one guy, probably from Milk & Honey). (The cocktail list looks a lot like the non-classics page at Little Branch, BTW.) It wasn't a good sign that they ran out of ice before 1 AM -- but I doubt they anticipated the incredible popularity they're engendering.

  • Subject: Weathered Down!!

After being in Europe for the last 2 weeks i was looking forwards to going to Weathered up, what a let down. I will be very honest about myself and my experience at this so called high end cocktail lounge. Like i said before i am not a business owner on VANDY, but i have worked at 2 of the top lounges in the city for the last 4 years, so i was excited about Weathered Up opening in our neighborhood. After my first bad experience a couple of weeks ago, i was really wanting to give it another chance, i decided to go on my own just to see how i fared up to the throngs of FRAT boys and their not so good looking opposite sex companions. First of all, looking at the cocktail list again i was extremely disapointed, the list if anything is extremely amateurish, looks like Sasha looked it up in a internet cocktail web site. Nothing remarkable to begin with ,you can't be a decent cocktail lounge without an egg or at least egg whites which they can purchase in met food 2 blocks a way, a lounge without a fizz is like a bull without balls, just not happening. The service if anything is extremely shitty, i have worked in cocktail lounges where there were 400 people at a time on the weekends and only 3 Bartenders behind the Bar, from my own experience i never have made anyone wait for a drink for than 3 minutes for a drink, from my experience last night i could have made love to my girlfriend a couple of times plus a joint and a couple of cigarettes and i could have still come back to the bar and still waited. Not only that but i ordered a drink that was not on the menu and they asked me what the proportions were. , that tells you about the genius of Sasha and the so called bartenders at weathered up. The atmosphere was like landing on Mars with a bunch Frat boys and girls in need of oxygen or at least booze. Like Alafarnadia said Eliza is good to look at but not a good mixer, the other chumps or like SNEAKEATER on Mouthful said PLEBES from Milk and Honey are the most unattentive and boring Bartenders i have met other than the ones at Soda specially on the weekends. For the 70 bucks i spent last night i would say it was worthless. I might as well just go The Savoy in London, Ritz in Paris, La opera in Mexico City, Million in Buenos Aires or Havana in Munchen. This place is more of a dive than Freddy's, Mooney's and Hank's combined. Last night i went to Elettaria on West 8th and watching the 3 bartenders mix was a revelation compared to what Weathered Up is trying to be. I will not go back there again...i know i have supported Barrette before and i will over this place, on Wednesday i go and drink there and Damon is probably one of the Best mixers on this side of the river and actually knows his spirits, other than that i rather go into the city, Smith and Mills, Employees Only, Schiller's , Freeman's which i decide not to go to again because of the Cunt male Bartender or Pegu. So waste your time and money its worth it!

    Alafarnadia how was Beast's party??
  • I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that sneaky gave Weather Up a bad review.
