underhill and st. johns corner crime troubles?
I would greatly appreciate any input people could give me on the corner of underhill and st. johns, as well as along st. johns up to washington ave. I lived in Prospect Heights in the mid-nineties and am now returning, and am trying to get a handle on these particular streets. It seems like these corners and nearby have been alive with crime a lot recently. Whats it like on a day to day basis? Is it drug related? Are they isolated incidents? Thanks for any help in advance.

I'd stay away. I saw these two cats looking at buying up that block:

Im talking about drugs, not arsenio hall. but I get your cold reception.
-
(a quick look made me think that was a still from coming to america- oops)
-
Hahaha. Arsenio Hall wasn't in the CMB. I guess they all look alike huh?
Don't worry about the crime. The 77th just got a new asset:

There is a lot of drug dealing on the corner of St. Johns and Washington, and has been for some time. I'm not sure about St. Johns and Underhill--when I walk that way it seems relatively quiet compared to Washington.
-
thanks a lot - thats what it seemed like to me, though Ive been hearing a lot of news of gunfights around that part of underhill. just trying to figure that out.

I'd suggest using the search function and deciding for yourself.

It's just that there's been so many threads about this over the past 3 years. There's a ton of information already posted about this if you look for it. -
FYI I have read through every single post on this site regarding these issues.
I am trying to ge peoples takes on my questions TODAY - as there has been developments in the past couple weeks.
As a side note, as Im getting a lot of anymosity here; Ive lived in the neighborhood before, and have been in brooklyn since the nineties. And I grew up in a neighborhood like PH.. just in PGH. Im neither ignorant nor a yuppie. just trying to be happy in my new nieghborood. -

Since you've been reading, you will realize there is a pretty high fatigue on this issue, and people get bummed out (and so perhaps take a poke at you) by seeing it again. You can't expect people to do this every week when there's nothing new - TODAY today today.
You asked pretty generally, so I'm not sure what you mean by developments in the last few weeks.
I think you can trust your actual experience of the place. People live here, and live their lives. I don't know where there's a good assessment of crime by micronabe now compared to 10 or 15 years ago. CompStat has been in place that long, but police reporting is unreliable* and those kind of numbers aren't super available anyway as far as I know...
or has the CompStat stat history been posted somewhere...mrjones wrote: I am trying to ge peoples takes on my questions TODAY - as there has been developments in the past couple weeks.
* I'm referring to how things are characterized and counted in the internal reporting (five incidents by one perp can be cooked to be one incident in the reporting), and the number of crimes of the type the OP is interested in that either are not reported or are turned away at the police station. If anyone really wants to talk about crime reporting and statistics, there is probably a better place to do it.

thanks for the advice pitu. I know Im being a downer.. Its certainly not what I want to talk about when I move in... its just that story of the driveby on underhill from a week or two ago has got me and my family spooked. The gothamist info you gave me is really helpful.. but is there an archive somewhere you know of? Where is the most up to date Compstat, and is it visualized anywhere? Does precinct 77 give out a list of incidents that you know of? thanks again.
-
Mr. Jones...check your PM.
-
The underhill st johns intersection is relatively quiet - no obvious dealing lately. And welcome back, blame the frosty reception on Monday morning angst.
-
it seems like a nice corner actually - its just that you hear stories. thanks for the welcome and the info.

and on a positive note I have been craving christies bakery every minute Ive been gone! a raisin bread that would take all day to eat. and a fishcake that I should NOT eat as well but I do anyway! so good.

Take a walk, look around for the sneakers hanging from the traffic lights.. I think there "was" as pair over on Underhill and St. Johns, and maybe two pairs on Washington and St. Johns..

no idea, but I do wonder
the police put out the bare bones stats in a blotter, and compile it but . . .
I set up a thread to talk about crime reporting in our little used Brooklyn and Beyond board . . .

This is a good barometer.
Here's a pic from about a year ago at Underhill between Lincoln and St Johns.

I've lived in the neighborhood 8 yrs and been in nyc for my entire life. Generally speaking this is an area in which, like other areas, things happen from time to time. Not trying to be evasive - just saying that it's not perpetual or constant drama, just disparate events.
That being said, I personally think that muggings and general street harassment are increasing. i have had at least four friends mugged or attacked in the last month in the areas of pro hts/clinton hill/ft. greene. And no, my friends are not suckers - they've also lived here their whole lives, and most without incident (every recent situation involved a group of boys between about the ages of 12 and 15).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes, I think there has been an upsurge of crime lately (i'd say the last 6 months), but i think it's a city-wide, or at least brooklyn-wide problem. as far as your question mrjones, i would try to keep in mind that things often seem scarier when read about on a message board. (ever try googling an ailment?) - I think you'd be happy on that block. most people i know are.
just my 2cents. -
what do sneakers hanging from traffic lights mean?

Watch Wag the Dog. That'll learn ya.

can you just learn me instead?

Mr.Met: Hope this helps you.

Betcha you and your family would like it. I lived in the area 6 years ago, and just returned with my husband a couple of months ago. Loved it then, love it now.
The shootings and drugs are unfortunate (and yes, scary), but everyday life in the area is lovely. -
Last Sunday I was double parked on the corner of St.J's and Underhill waiting for a p-spot when I saw a bunch of kids across from the bodega throw a gym bag across the street. A fight ensued and about 5 minutes later police pulled up, padded down the kids, sent a few away and kept one. One of the police walked across the street and picked up the bag. Then I saw a woman come around the corner and talk to the police, she stayed there until another woman come out of the building where the kid was stationed and started talking to the kid being detained. It looked like these two women knew each other and if I had to guess, the woman who came out of the building was the kid's mom...she was really angry, yelling in the other woman's face. I found a p-spot and then went home. So, I have no idea if there was an arrest, but it looked like it was heading that way.
I assume from the looks of it, there was a drug bust going on. The kids to me looked like they were in high school. So yeah, I'd say there is some dealing going on on St.J's and Underhill. That night I noticed that there were two cars stationed on Washington and Lincoln and St.J's and Underhill w/lights flashing but no occupants. It looks as if police were trying to send a clear message that that night was not the night to be out selling. By the time I was double parked on St.J's the car was gone, but it had been there for maybe two hours before that! Looks like the 77th is aware there are issues in the neighborhood. I've been on St.J's since '98 and have never seen that kinda action before. -
Why is that necessarily a drug bust? How about bad ass high school kids brawling?
Can't we end this thread already? -
It looked more like kids just fooling around, not throwing down for real! Why would the police even bother with something like that if the scrap took all of half a minute, wasn't loud...and was well over by the time they showed up?! All those kids were doind was hanging on the front stoop of the building before all that had happened.
Why the pad down? Why throw the gym bag across the street and leave it there? None of the kids walked across to get it after the brawl or when the police showed up and told them to scram!
Definitely had the look of a drug thing going on. Say what ya will! -

Yeah let's all hide our heads in the sand and not talk about the obvious problems. better yet, let's chastise people for even bringing up problems in the neighborhood. Then the problems will go away!
Can't we end this thread already?
