I think the 7th Ave Donuts from down the street will be moving into that spot. I think there was some discussion about it in another thread a while back.

Noticed that storefront opening as well. It seemed unclear about what services were being offered. It read kind of like an especially warm and fuzzy Pediatrician's office but I have no inside information.

That's the old family-owned "Launder Center", where photos of itself from the early '50's (if not late '40's) were displayed. Guess it's goodbye to those original worked-metal ceilings, not to mention the old counter and booths of the donut shop.

And the end of a 60 year line of continuous family ownership.

Any update on the Greasy Corner? It's September now and they've been soaped up since late June....

years ago there was a bar there called the Alamo....

When I first arrived about 20 years ago, I believe it was a crummy Italian restaurant. That location always seemed a kind of bad luck place.

Above the restaurant, Holy Cow was a great vintage record store. The owner, Steve, was knowledgable and very nice.

Wait, is the peppermill the largish Korean deli that has Amy's bread on the NW corner? I LOVE that place...it's really going to open again, right?

I think you're talking about Village Market. Peppermill is average deli size with the orange awning and is on the east side of 7th. Village Market (red awning, much larger space) is on the west side, a block further south. You'll be happy to know that until Peppermill is back open, Village Market is open 24 hours. If only they were like that all the time~

Also, the sign in the window at the Real Birth place on 5th is creepy.

Cleaners all over the place -- at least 3 have opened recently on 5th Avenue between Union and 9th Street (one may have moved as the sign on the former premises states that if you left clothes there, they have been "transferred" to another cleaner that just opened.

It's almost like there is a dry cleaner on every block.

Perhaps people think with the recession, no one is buying clothing, they are simply cleaning what they have. There will be some sort of shakeout.

dry cleaners operate without a ton of overhead, keep fairly minimal hours and usually just have just a single person or two working the place.

they are cash cows. think about it. 4 bucks to dry clean a shirt...it probably costs 1/4th that. the rest is profit.

the new cleaners popping up all over the slope seem to all have encorporated "green" into the name which is a good idea because park slopers fall for that stuff pretty easily.

i have 5 dry cleaners within a block or two of my apartment and interestingly enough, they all seem to have found their niche are are holding strong.

The new cleaners on 8th and 7th ave is "green" ie will probably cost you double.
I would think with almost double digit unemployment, people would not be taking their clothes to be dry cleaned. Who cares what you look like on the unemployment line.

Things are happening at the 6th Ave/7th Street spot. I think they're just waiting for their DOH inspection now (at least that's what they told me).

It's called Kohzee Cafe. I'll post a picture of it later.

At least it's not Kohzee *K*afe The hours are listed as 6-11, I'm guessing that means am-pm.

^what was that place before? I'm having a hard time picturing it.
