Thanks for the tip. I just added it. FYI, it's called "The Great Happiness Space".

I saw a good, old Japenese movie last week called "Woman in the Dunes". Sort of old Twilight Zone feel to it.

I second Grand Illusion. It's one of those classics that is taught in film class. Also,

    1. Rope - classic Hitchcock with only 4 edits in the entire movie; it's amazing to watch and to think about how many takes it must have taken them to get everything right (especially the scene where the swinging door swings in such a way that you see the bad guy doing something bad when it swings open).
    2. Manchurian Candidate (original) - Angela Lansbury, only 5 years older than her "son" costar (Laurence Harvey), is chilling. Frank Sinatra said he was offered the role as the son but that he knew he didn't have the acting skills to play that part so he took the easier role.
    3. Atonement - hot actors, hot (non-graphic) sex scene, sad story
    4. Hair - it should have made Treat Williams a star - the dancing and songs are great.

Also, surprised at the dissing of the U.S. version of The Office. I think Steve Carell (and most of the cast) is briliiant.

Also, The Killing Fields and I second Raise the Red Lantern.

In response to a couple of queries, I do not recommend 28 Weeks Later (although I loved 28 Days Later).

Just finished watching Man On Wire - brilliant, thanks for the rec. For those of you interested in documentaries, check out Born Into Brothels - about Calcutta's red light district - difficult subject matter but amazing, and The Story of the Weeping Camel - Mongolian camel eventually reunited with its baby. Both available on Netflix watch now, I think.

Also agree with previous poster. All About Eve is perhaps one of the best pictures ever made. Top 5 anyway.

Yay! Somebody else watched Man on Wire. You know the guy survives, but still...crazy shit!

All About Eve was a great classic.

I saw Born into Brothels, but will add the Weeping Camel into my queue (it's available for instant viewing). Thanks, Voodoo

Its an ESPN documentary. A friend of mine works for ESPN so I got to attend a screening. I think it might actually still be airing on ESPN and ESPN2.

This was a great one as well about a physics professor who coaches high school girl's basketball in Seattle. It followed him for seven years and covered what happened to his teams. Really interesting to watch these girls turn from wide-eyed 14 year olds into this group of totally focused sharks, wolves, lions, etc.

flexi: thanks for the correction. that's the one.

voodoo: born into brothels is great. i recently read in the news somewhere, that the boy who was picked to go to netherland, is currently studying in nyu now as a freshman. im glad things turn out great for him.

    Revival!

I highly recommend "Rachel Getting Married". I seriously did not think Anne Hathaway had it in her for that type of role. Plus (aside from the major dysfunction w/in that family) the wedding looked like a lot of fun

I have Rachel from netflix but haven't watched it yet. Thought Changeling was really good but it's awfully creepy it's a true story. I was surprisingly entertained by Pride & Glory with Ed Norton (cop movie). Also watched a lot of garbage lately. What Just Happened - really, Bobby DeNiro?

Will come up with some more recs though, just have to remember!

Changeling was good, and agree that it's creepy because it was true...although it was a little long.

I saw Pride & Glory and thought it was entertaining - not spectacular, but I can watch Edward Norton recite the alphabet.

Watch Rachel. Do it. Have tissues nearby. I watched this on my laptop while traveling last night and cried at the hotel through almost the whole thing....yet there are some very funny parts as well. And Debra Winger is in it. Yay! Looking like a woman her age is *supposed* to look - with wrinkles and all.

I wasn't fond of In Bruges.

Chop Shop was decent. Frozen River is in my queue - waiting for it to come.

    Yes, it was good.

I also really enjoyed "The Reader".

Please, keep the suggestions coming - I'm going through movies like crazy since I can't get out of the house.

"Revolutionary Road" and "Defiance" are coming today.

Last night I watched "Transsiberian", which was ok. I love Emily Watson.

EVERYONE PLEASE STOP SAYING THE WRESTLER WAS GOOD!!!!

i want that 2.5 hours of my life back. One of the worst movies I've ever seen and I'm not even picky.

Where's Christina...she and I argued about this the other night...

I just saw Defiance the other day and I liked it, although after so many WWII movies I felt like I've seen it before.

Incidentally, I saw it streaming from netflix. If you have a netflix account with 2 out or more, you can see an unlimited number of streaming movies for free. The selection is still a bit limited, but if they have something you want to see, you can watch it instantly without having to wait for it to come in the mail. I'm a big fan.

Carni - yes, I have streaming Netflix (Roku box), and that's how I saw Transsiberian and several other movies. It's awesome - although I do wish they had a larger selection
  • carnivore

I don't have the box. I just stream them through my computer. I think the selection will get better as more people start to use it as their primary way of getting movies.

I talked to Netflix and the selection is based on the movie studios and their negotiations for distribution. Some are easier to deal with than others.

Some other streaming movies I liked include "I Like Killing Flies" and "Street Fight"

For those with Vista, there's a new Netflix app to view movies through the Media Center - it's a little more remote friendly that browser-based viewing. I'm hoping that they bring the same update to the Win 7 Media Center...
