Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — Brooklynian

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

Holy shit. This is interesting.
Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket for the White House, CNN has learned. The 44-year-old Palin, now in her first term as governor, is a pioneering figure in Alaska, the first woman and the youngest person to hold the state's top political job.

  • Surprising. I'm curious to learn more than the zero I know about her. I was just talking yesterday about how bad (for Repubs) the VP choices were.

Conservative Christian hockey mom ... political ethics proponent ... chair of the National Governors Association's Natural Resources Committee ... political newbie, 2 years as gov ... scandal involving getting her brother-in-law fired from a state trooper job while he was in a child custody dispute with her sister ... strongly against abortion ... more to come as the media scrambles...
  • oh, man. this is going to get ugly, isn't it?

obama needs to get on the stick about courting hillary voters, yesterday.

once i heard her name in consideration, i thought she would be the smart pick for the same reason i always assumed the republicans would be the first to nominate a woman or minority for president: they have the most voters to gain.

CNN wrote: Palin made her name in part by backing tough ethical standards for politicians. During the first legislative session after her election, her administration passed a state ethics law overhaul.

    Yes.
CNN wrote: Palin has focused on energy and natural resources policy during her short stint in office, and she is known for her support of drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, a position opposed by McCain but supported by many grass-roots Republicans.

Her biography on the state governor's Web site says one of the two major pieces of legislation passed during her first legislative session was a competitive process to construct a gas pipeline.

Palin started Alaska's Petroleum Systems Integrity Office, an oversight and maintenance agency for the state's oil and gas equipment, facilities and infrastructure. She created the Climate Change Subcabinet that would forge a climate change strategy, according to the biography.

Palin chairs the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multistate panel "that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment," the biography says.

She has been named chair of the National Governors Association's Natural Resources Committee. That panel is focused on legislation to ensure that federal policies take state priorities into account in agriculture, energy, environmental protection and natural resource management.
And ... a lifetime NRA member, of course.
  • yes, she's pro-ANWAR drilling.
  • ....also against gay marriage. But it seems that both sides are...
  • she's apparently very anti-polar bear:

but that flower-corsage-thingy is very Carrie Bradshaw!

Sounds like her stance is more pro-oil and gas than anti-polar bear. FWIW.

So does that make the flower-corsage-thingy good or bad?

I have to admit, it _does_ frighten me a little...

Hmmm, it's more Office Prom to me....
Carrie would never wear a white flower with a blue background, with a red sweater, under a black blazer. Just no.

    Chick polititians cannot dress, IMHO.
  • I thought it was Tina Fey at first doing a Punk'd episode
    :)
  • The new look?

Or, maybe pandering to 18-yr-old boys in the throes of sexual fantasy - way to go after the youth vote John!

Yes, now that I've seen the photos and heard more about her, I'm getting more of a Kathryn Harris vibe than a Carrie Bradshaw!

    Cheese and rice!

That one is lose-lose. I'm not on McCain's cheer leading squad, but come on. If he picks a chick, then he is pandering?

The first thing _I_ thought was that he was playing to Obama's inexperience and fresh ideas, as in, "Hey look, I gots that too!"

And if she isn't a dawg, then he's after the sexual fantasy vote?

    Lol.
  • Does anyone know what song that was playing when she was brought up to the stage?

    You gots video????

... mother of five ... latest one has Down syndrome, like 4.5 months ago.
During her first year in office, Palin distanced herself from the old guard, powerful Republicans in the state GOP, even calling on tight- lipped veteran U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens to explain to Alaskans why federal authorities were investigating him.

She asked Alaska's congressional delegation to be more selective in seeking earmarks after what came to be known as the "Bridge to Nowhere" turned into a national symbol of piggish pork-barrel spending.

She stood up to the powerful oil industry, and with bipartisan support in the statehouse she won a tax increase on oil companies' profits.

She also found time to pose for the fashion magazine Vogue while she was pregnant, and she has been mentioned as a potential running mate for presidential candidate John McCain.

For sure - this is a 100% anti-choice, born-again Christian, card-carrying member of the NRA who wants to drill Alaska into Swiss cheese - with less experience than any other possible candidate for anything.
  • LTT, that was beneath you.

can't we wait a day before we reduce a female candidate to only a female body?
  • sweet tea wrote: can't we wait a day before we reduce a female candidate to only a female body?
Honestly, the more I hear about her, the more badass she is appearing. Which isn't to say that I agree with her politically, 'cause I don't. But I'm a bit impressed thus far in general.
  • yeah, i know, i know. i remember reading some stuff about her a year ago or so. she's so much cooler than mccain. it worries your ward leader.
  • and, yellow-dog democrat that i am, i've been feeling REALLY angry about the inevitable penis parade that is presidential politics. this won't by any means convince me to vote for bush III, but i'm afraid obama is dangerously underestimating the post-hillary female anger out there.

guilty as charged - but the entire blogosphere is going there - I know that doesn't excuse me, but I couldn't resist.

OMG! Obama v. McCain sword fight!

    Or not.

Palin will wax them all.

    You want her.
  • This just in - Ralph Reed's quote...
“They’re beyond ecstatic,” said Ralph Reed, the former head of the Christian Coalition. “This is a home run. She is a reformer governor who is solidly pro-life and a person of deep Christian faith. And she is really one of the bright shining new stars in the Republican firmament.”

GawdDAMN. McCain shoring up the Christians and reaching out to PUMA in the same step?

    How does _that_ happen???
