Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

...Tom Ridge? I have trouble thinking he'd really pick unlikeable Lieberman, but maybe.

Picturing Palin and the First Dude ca. 2010 taking foreign leaders on hunting trips instead of to the ranch. This could be fun.

According to Faux News, she has foreign policy experience because "she is right up there in Alaska, right next door to Russia!"

Palin will backfire. McCain should have went for Huckabee or Romney.

I think the republicans still need to get their evangelical base to actually turn out in full in order to have a chance, and they're more likely to get that with one of their own on the ticket. Also... how many votes are actually level headed? Don't most people decide on the basis of appearance, emotion, prejudice and so on, then find reasons and pick facts to justify that choice if needed?Idlewild wrote:
He might have gone more middle-of-the road, like Lieberman or Romney, rather than make a play for some of the Clinton supporters.
I'm curious who McCain would have picked if Obama did choose Clinton as his VP running mate. Any guesses? -

Yeah I just don't see significant numbers of Hillary supporters voting for someone this rightwing strictly b/c of gender solidarity.
More than going for Hillary supporters per se, I see this as a desperate attempt by the Republican party to hide the fact that that they're full to the brim with white men, usually older ones at that. They can pick all the unqualified VP candidates they want, but the Repubs aren't going to change their candidate demographic overnight, and the country is changing and leaving them behind.
I mean it's 2008 and they couldn't field one serious contender who wasn't a white male.
As for the choice itself, it's obviously an interesting move for McCain's chances to win, but I can't stop laughing at what a joke choice this is for our country. McCain is this wise old man who knows what's best for us, and this is who he thinks should hold one of the highest offices in the land?
McCain's campaign is just a rolling joke, but in this country with people who couldn't care less about wars being fought in their name and do care about Jeremiah Wright, I don't find it surprising in the least that people want to give the party responsible for the last 8 years another 4 years.
We spend time talking about PUMAs and arugula, and then wonder how we end up with the housing crisis, 18% of the country uninsured, and 120,000 troops taking longer to pacify a nation of 30 million than it took for us to defeat Nazi Germany. -
Like the man says, "McCain just doesn't get it". Even Michael Savage, a subhuman at best says McCain threw the election trying to pander rather than making a long term smart choice. Even Harriet Myers has more experience than Palin.

Before she was running against him, Sarah Palin—the governor of Alaska and now the Republican candidate for Vice-President of the United States—thought it was pretty neat that Barack Obama was edging ahead of John McCain in her usually solidly red state. After all, she said, Obama’s campaign was using the same sort of language that she had in her gubernatorial race. “The theme of our campaign was ‘new energy,’ ” she said recently. “It was no more status quo, no more politics as usual, it was all about change. So then to see that Obama—literally, part of his campaign uses those themes, even, new energy, change, all that, I think, O.K., well, we were a little bit ahead on that.” She also noted, “Something’s kind of changing here in Alaska, too, for being such a red state on the Presidential level. Obama’s doing just fine in polls up here, which is kind of wigging people out, because they’re saying, ‘This hasn’t happened for decades that in polls the D’ ”—the Democratic candidate—“ ‘is doing just fine.’ To me, that’s indicative, too. It’s the no-more-status-quo, it’s change.”
This was two weeks ago, at the statehouse in Juneau. After persistent reports, in July, that Palin was on McCain’s short list of potential running mates, her name had faded back into obscurity. Nobody in Alaska seemed to take her seriously as a national prospect, and she had shrugged the whole thing off on television, telling CNBC’s Larry Kudlow that, before considering the job, she would want to know “what is it, exactly, that the V.P. does every day.” -
HURRY UP, THEY ARE DELETING EVERYTHING SHE SAID POSITIVE ABOUT OBAMA...

Palin Pleased with Obama's Energy Plan
No. 08-135
August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Governor Palin said. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”
In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, “Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process.”
Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.
“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.” -

Typical. I bet no one would accuse her of faking a pregnancy if she were a male candidate.

Conservative Christian leaders are forming a chorus to denounce John McCain's pick of a working mother for his Vice President. They're saying that Palin is sacrificing her family on the altar of her career and shows "anti-family" values. They further argue that this effort to win the pro-family political argument is dismissive of pro-family values. -

Mayoral performance. Palin, who portrays herself as a fiscal conservative, racked up nearly $20 million in long-term debt as mayor of the tiny town of Wasilla — that amounts to $3,000 per resident. She argues that the debt was needed to fund improvements.
