lilguyThanks, Caseo...My list is pretty full right now, but when it gets thin, I might take you up on that!
Idlewild...I am read for my closeup :-) That was a good move! -
leehoI got a few for ya from Asia. Have you guys seen any Won Kar-Wai stuff? A good one to really sink your teeth into is In the Mood For Love. Simply gorgeous and sad all around. That's from Hong Kong. Also, try Afterlife and Nobody Knows. Nobody Knows is ure to bring some tears to your eyes. Crushing, but the child acting is unbelievable. The main actor, a 12 year old won something at Cannes for his acting.
It's also fun to go down the old Jarmusch road as well. Stranger Than Paradise and Down by Law are fine, fine films.
Just watched The Royal Tanenbaums recently and it get smore peculiar and btter with each viewing.
And for a drinkin' flick, Factotum is great, as well as Barfly if you haven't seen that as well.
Fun, fun to write about movies! -
alafairnadiado NOT see the sequel to in the mood for love. it's painful. I wanted lightning to strike or something. -
spriteI forgot to mention Smiles of a Summer Night (Swedish). A Little Night Music is based on it, and I rented it after seeing the musical. It's so good I think I need to buy it. -
furrygreyboyOn the "Avoid at all Costs" list...... "Elizabethtown"- This sucked so much I walked out. Also, "Match Point" - worst acting I've ever seen. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought these were total crap....? -
c_____nSo, I rented Antonia's Line, only to realize I saw it already. Phooey! It was good, though.
I haven't seen "Elizabethtown" or "Match Point", so I'll be sure to cross them off the list.
But I will add "Smiles of a Summer Night" -
leehoAnybody here see Fast Food Nation? I just saw it and it blew me away. Pretty amazing stuff and kinda depressing as well. -

I don't want to see it OR read the book. There's enough shit (like vegetables and stuff) that I don't eat. A woman needs some vices! -

I agree. I shudder at most documentaries - shit I don't want to know. -
theoryofpracticeI also recently saw Sunset Boulevard -- terrific, which reminds me of a few other classics:
• The Treasure of Sierra Madre with Bogart
• Bergman's The Virgin Spring -- heavy
• Hitchcock's Notorious -- yummy Ingrid
and even though you've got to watch it twice to get it
• The Big Sleep is incredible
and good clean fun
• Charade -- romantic comedy that cannot be beat..."you ain't no Cary Grant / but then again who is"
• Night on Earth weepingly funny
and while most of the ladies in my life don't like samurai, Ran and the Seven Samurai are astounding -

I liked Match Point. The acting didn't bother me (though I admit I'm a poor judge) and while the film was a little long, I felt the slow build-up really paid off - it made the climax incredibly suspenseful. It was worth the ticket price, IMO. -
leehoBYW. it's not a documentary....and the girl from Maria Full of Grace is in it. She is a great actress! -
heightsmomSprite - thanks for recommending Late Marriage. I liked it! What a family
-
lnf151Some updates:
Saw "Late Marriage". Liked it very much
"Candy" with Heath Ledger - liked it
"Painted Veil" - Love me some Edward Norton
"Schoolhouse Rock" - Need I say more?
I saw "Elizabethtown and didn't think it was so horrible, perhaps because it reminded me about stuff that happened when my father died (cremation, memorial service, putting things into perspective, etc.). Not fabulous, but not a total waste of 2 hours either. -
shishkab(i love edward norton, too)
(just thought i'd share  ) -

Saw him at Balthazar one night. Later told a friend and he thought I meant Art Carney (Ed Norton from Honeymooners)
(just thought i'd share  )

Taller in person than I expected and not acting like a jerk. Dreams are intact

carnivoreThis interesting list from movies.com just got dugg today:
25 Best Movies You've Never Seen -
shishkabChopper, Breakdown, Falling Down -- YES!!! -
doctorjAnd Falling Down, Boondock Saints, and Heavenly Creatures. Nice list.
By the way: best recent release I've seen is The Prestige. -
whyfidoctorj wrote: By the way: best recent release I've seen is The Prestige.
It was discussed in another thread, but bears repeating - The Fountain, also starring Hugh Jackman, is great recent release that's also a little off the beaten path. -
brooklynartI saw Prestige...pretty good.
I'll add The Fountain to my list too -
doctorjLoved The Fountain; it was the one film I saw in a cinema last year. For this kind of film, it's almost a shame to do it on DVD. -

Yeah, but if you missed it, you missed it... in the theater, that is. One that I really want to see now - Once. Maybe I'll see if I can drag the wife to the theater tonight.
Anybody a fan of Japanese movies? I love 'em. Well, the handful that I've seen. Trouble is finding out which to see. Any recommendations are welcome. A couple that I liked -
Kikujiro - quirky and touching. A young boy looking for his parents is accompanied by a comically despicable low-life, low-level thug.
Densha Otoko (Train Man) - again, quirky and touching. A man pursuing a love interest is coached by a bunch of strangers on an internet chat site. -
MODAll Kar Wai Wong movies! In the Mood for Love is a great movie so is it's sequel 2046. Sooooo goood.

"If you only see one film this year..... you should get out more often" -
leehoWhy-Fi, have you seen any Koreeda movies? Afterlife or Nobody Knows? Face is a pretty good one, too. Really weird and kind of sad, but lovely.
Also, any Won Kar-Wai is awesome. You're totally right. I can't wait to see the Nora Jones flick he just finished (hopefully) and was shot in the US. I think that'll be really interesting! -
whyfiI've seen Nobody Knows - good movie, but a downer. -
carnivoreIsn't Wong Kar Wai Chinese? I thought WhyFi wanted Japanese films...
It almost goes without saying that any Akira Kurosawa movie is worth checking out. Another famous Japanese director is Masaki Kobayashi. I liked The Inheritence and Hara Kiri.
I also recommend any film directed by Juzo Itami. Start with Tampopo, especially for the foodies out there. The Funeral is another great one. All of his "Taxing Woman" movies are good. And The Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion is also worth seeing.
I'll see if I can think of some more... -
whyfiCarnivore wrote: Isn't Wong Kar Wai Chinese? I thought WhyFi wanted Japanese films...
Eh - they all look alike... (for those not in the know - relax. I'm half Asian. I'm allowed... half of the time.)
I branch out to other parts of the Far East, sometimes 8) - I watched a Korean film last night - My Sassy Girl. It was good. I shudder to think of what the American remake (it's on the way) will be like. -

 It was the first thing that popped into my head. Jeesh, even Papi Chulo made fun of me. But I refuse to use the edit button!!
...
I get no respect around here.......
BTW Any Beat Takeshi film rocks
